'Quick' Recap.

Once upon a time, despite warnings to the contrary after previously attempting to recreate a speech from the 1930s, Theresa May triggered a50.

A series of events, which included a disastrous unnecessary General Election and losing seats, ensured that we have Brexit by Timetable in which every piece of goodwill was burnt up a long time ago, and the EU decided to go "see ya then".

Only this General Election, made this politically impossible as well as practically impossible, given how this would destroy our economy.

So May did the only thing she could and agreed to lock us in with sufficient progress deal, which is legally binding, if no deal is agreed. Thus giving us in essence a choice between staying in the Single Market and Customs Union due to NI or breaking an international agreement which would destroy all our international credibility and trust.

Except none of the Brexiteers really grasped what was happening. Until this week.

In the meantime we still have had spectacles of Nadine Dorries asking on the infamous WhatsApp Group why we can't stay in the CU. Any Davis saying that he has now apparently 'changed his mind' on the matter. Not that Labour are any better, with Corbyn saying we can't stay in the Single Market and leave the EU. Except of course, Norway is in the Single Market...

Fast forward through a sex scandal that's swept through Westminster, installing self appointing the vampiric Gavin Williamson as Defence Secretary, we eventually ended up with a reshuffle which was possibly as pointless and as successful as the General Election. And Gavin Williamson is caught up in a sex scandal.

May has managed to drag the Great Repel Bill through the Commons, without breaking the party, but with much back room dealing and compromise with Remainers. Hailed as something of a victory by Brexiteers, this rather is a fools paradise. At what price to their ideological purity did this come? Is there much Brexit left? And there is much more to come in the Lords, with the LDs committed to working with Labour on securing at least 10 amendments. The two parties have a majority in the Lords if they work together.

Away from parliament we have had the glorious demise of Toby Young, who is forever to be remembered for eugenics.

As it has become apparent that we are increasingly looking like we are on track for BINO, the EU have told us, that we should have sucked up a compromise proposal earlier and now the Norway Option is off the table as we fucked that up by taking too long to disagree amongst ourselves and being arses to EU citz. I paraphrase slightly here, but that's about he long and short of it. Instead we get the pleasure of 21 months of the EU interfering in our law without representation. And we are already locked into this. Now Leavers can moan about this, and shock horror, actually be correct about it too! Transition will be up to 31st Dec 2020 at the latest. Which realistically is still too soon, not that any lying arsed Brexiteer is willing to admit to this. Yet.

The only way to get out of this proposal for better terms? Either beg the EU for something there is no way they will give us or revoke / extend a50.

The fall out from May's reshuffle is still going on in slow motion. Rees-Mogg has got a bigger platform to spout shit he knows nothing about, admit that he has never changed a nappy nor wiped his own arse, thinks women should give birth to football teams, and how he has never visited IKEA and has no plans to do so. Johnson has tried to build bridges. And effed that one up again. Gove has made us all be obsessed by plastic straws and turn into environmental maniacs because no other minister is good at press releases and media stunts. Arch Remainac Liddington, got Deputy PM and took over Brexshit even more from DExEU. Hunt is in no way after becoming PM and Greening is really pissed and when straight back to lead from the Naughty Step.

To cut the long story short: they all hate May and think she's shit

There are thought to be nearly 48 letters to trigger a leadership election in Graham Brady's hands. But not quite. And its not about the letters its about needing 159 MPs to no confidence her... but that is starting to sound more and more plausible in the face of Brexshit hitting the fan.

We now have a leaked impact assessment that we really were not supposed to see which is slightly less worse than Project Fear. But not by much. Its supposed to be by DExEU. Its been suggested that its actually by alt-DExEU aka the Cabinet Department (Robbins and Liddington).

Anyway, nothing is decided. May might zombie on forever. She won't, she's in a crowded field of Tories with stakes. But that sub-committee meeting on Wed 7th Feb is crunch time for something or someone.

Tick tock, tick tock, went the Brexit Clock.

Oh yeah and there's going to be a trade war between the US and EU. And there's some stuff about a ex-Belize diplomat. And Trump's coming to visit us.

Well I for one can’t be doing with this intolerance towards trans people so that’s me off now.
It's not intolerance to trans People, it's intolerance to self ID. I don't understand how anyone supports it while Lily Madigan and Laurel Hubbard are doing what they do.

woman11017 · 12/02/2018 22:39

It's a hundred years or more of legal rights, which could easily vanish if we don't make a stand now. If anyone can identify as a woman, then Women's Rights disappear.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/02/2018 23:04

Labour are saying that feelings of identity by transwomen trump biological facts and also the history of women being oppressed & disadvantaged.

Almost all women experience at least one of these:
menstruation, childbirth, breastfeeding, menopause, being at physical risk from the generally physically stronger biological sex that commits 98% of all sexual assaults and 85% of all violent crime

The Labour machine should be helping make the lives of women easier, not tougher & more dangerous.

Brexit: Varadkar and May to work on plan for frictionless Irish border

www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/feb/12/irish-pm-to-raise-brexit-border-concerns-in-talks-with-may

the taoiseach admitted that achieving this was the “tricky bit” in Brexit talks
< he's baffled too >

BigChocFrenzy · 12/02/2018 23:31

Labour, the polls and the Customs Unionn_

https://mainlymacro.blogspot.de

Sometime this month Labour will discuss its strategy over Brexit < hopefully with more agreement than the Cabinet)
The danger of its current position is clear.

Theresa May is going at some point be forced to admit that we will stay in some form of customs union with the EU because of the Irish border issue
< really ? Hmm >

The only alternative is to leave with no deal < increasingly likely >
or dump the DUP < nearly unthinkable >

Whichever occurs, Labour’s non-position on the Customs Union will look bad.

If she goes for a deal Labour will be the wrong side of the government in terms of triangulation, which will be fatal to its support.
If she goes for No Deal because of the Customs Union Labour will be immediately asked what it would do.
Deciding to stay in the Customs Union just at the point when the issue becomes critical will look like the political opportunism that it is.

Given that, there is a clear advantage from coming off the fence sooner rather than later.

The benefit of declaring to be in favour of staying in the customs union is that they will, once more, create clear distance between their own position and the government.

RedToothBrush · 12/02/2018 23:31

My sibling is trans. Self ID is bad for them. A lot of the problem here is mistaking critical thought and being pro woman for being anti trans. There is a MASSIVE difference.

Anyway...

“Voters weren’t told about the costs of Brexit”. Oh yes they were. Day after day by Remain campaigners and by the Government itself. They weighed those costs against the gains and decided, on balance, to vote leave.

Important moment. Even prominent Leavers now admit 'Project Fear' was accurate.

Cailleach1 · 13/02/2018 08:15

Don't you just love (and not even be a teeny but surprised) that an purported equality act discriminates against women. Or as I have to qualify, natural born women. People knowingly and actively voted for an act to discriminate against women and are glowing in their progressiveness. The only time someone cannot identify as the opposite sex is when it is a natural born woman who will be disinherited because of her sex. Birth sex very real and unchangeable in that instance.

^Until 2004, transgender people were not formally recognised
by English law in their acquired sex. Then came the Gender Recognition Act (GRA) 2004, which allows them to be fully recognised in their new gender by the law, provided they meet certain criteria. But the lawyers who thrashed out the act must have debated the issue of trans toffs, because they made one exception. Section 16 states: 'The fact that a person's gender has become the acquired gender under this Act (a) does not affect the descent of any peerage or dignity or title of honour, and (b) does not affect the devolution of any property.' So, as the law stands, the marquess's transgender brother would not get the dukedom.^

Cailleach1 · 13/02/2018 08:18

Won't affect a lot of people. Big inheritances, yes. But it is the principle.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/02/2018 09:03

Yes, keeping the plebs quiet with bread & circuses
but making sure the important people are not disadvantaged in any way

The perfect policy for an impotent and cowardly government

BigChocFrenzy · 13/02/2018 09:06

Hannan, you two-faced bugger Angry

Remain kept warning, but Leavers - like you - rubbished the warnings as Project Fear
soon to be renamed as Project Not-Fearful-Enough

BigChocFrenzy · 13/02/2018 09:07

No prominent Leaver said:

"many people will be poorer, but Brexit is worth it"

Cailleach1 · 13/02/2018 09:41

Johnson said there may be even more money to the NI farmers after Brexit.

In fact there was going to be a never ending pot of money. If you spent the bare EU membership contribution on one sector, it was there again to be spent on another one. And again. And again.....

They never mentioned how the income and revenue by dint of being an EU member state and benefitting from frictionless trade and the plethora of trade agreements with outside EU countries would be at risk.

Mistigri · 13/02/2018 09:44

I don't really understand the mumsnet obsession with trans issues tbh. While I have a lot of sympathy for the point of view that one should not change the accepted definition of words to suit interest groups, I also have trouble believing that this is the huge issue for our children that people see to think it is - especially as those children often have quite different attitudes to transgender issues.

As for the Remain campaign "not telling people" anyone who is still ignorant of the implications of leaving the SM and/or CU nearly two years after the vote is either thick or dishonest. There is no third option. I no longer debate with these people, as they are either too stupid to make a coherent point, or incapable of honest discussion.

Cailleach1 · 13/02/2018 09:59

As for the Remain campaign "not telling people" anyone who is still ignorant of the implications of leaving the SM and/or CU nearly two years after the vote is either thick or dishonest

Mistigri Funny you should mention that. You'd think a host from a current affairs programme who has been interviewing people, since before the referendum, re Brexit __mostly UKIP or leavers-- would have a grasp on his topic. Yet Nick Clegg still had to correct Andrew Neil on what the SU was and how it operated in the latter half of 2017.

Bus ride for Leavers when the interviews haven't a clue. They can __and did-- spout any old guff without fear of being taken to book.

RedToothBrush · 13/02/2018 10:33

It seems that the UK as head of the commonwealth by virtue of the Queen might be at risk...

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-43040240
Commonwealth in secret succession plans

The Commonwealth has secretly begun considering who might succeed the Queen as its head, the BBC has learned.

The issue is hugely sensitive because the role is not hereditary and will not pass automatically to the Prince of Wales on the Queen's death.

The Commonwealth has set up a "high level group" to look at the way the international organisation is governed.

This group is meeting later, officially to review how the Commonwealth is run by its secretariat and governors.

However, senior sources added that the gathering in London would also consider what happens when the Queen, who turns 92 in April, dies.

I think a few Brexiteers might spontaneously explode and some might even declare we should leave if the King (be it Charles or William) isn't declared the new head.

Well that's Queen v King, noting that until the last couple of years a male heir would always have got the crown over his sister, so that one is pretty straightforward to 'predict'.

Nostradamus was an astrologer. Astrology was at its height in terms of importance during the English Civil War era. Astrology was extensively used as propaganda by both sides.

These 'scholars' were trying to revive an art that had lost is popularity and status. What is more evocative than to use the name Charles seeing as one got his head chopped off and the other restored the throne.

Saying King Theodore would be the last was hardly going to cut it the same way.
