'Quick' Recap.

Once upon a time, despite warnings to the contrary after previously attempting to recreate a speech from the 1930s, Theresa May triggered a50.

A series of events, which included a disastrous unnecessary General Election and losing seats, ensured that we have Brexit by Timetable in which every piece of goodwill was burnt up a long time ago, and the EU decided to go "see ya then".

Only this General Election, made this politically impossible as well as practically impossible, given how this would destroy our economy.

So May did the only thing she could and agreed to lock us in with sufficient progress deal, which is legally binding, if no deal is agreed. Thus giving us in essence a choice between staying in the Single Market and Customs Union due to NI or breaking an international agreement which would destroy all our international credibility and trust.

Except none of the Brexiteers really grasped what was happening. Until this week.

In the meantime we still have had spectacles of Nadine Dorries asking on the infamous WhatsApp Group why we can't stay in the CU. Any Davis saying that he has now apparently 'changed his mind' on the matter. Not that Labour are any better, with Corbyn saying we can't stay in the Single Market and leave the EU. Except of course, Norway is in the Single Market...

Fast forward through a sex scandal that's swept through Westminster, installing self appointing the vampiric Gavin Williamson as Defence Secretary, we eventually ended up with a reshuffle which was possibly as pointless and as successful as the General Election. And Gavin Williamson is caught up in a sex scandal.

May has managed to drag the Great Repel Bill through the Commons, without breaking the party, but with much back room dealing and compromise with Remainers. Hailed as something of a victory by Brexiteers, this rather is a fools paradise. At what price to their ideological purity did this come? Is there much Brexit left? And there is much more to come in the Lords, with the LDs committed to working with Labour on securing at least 10 amendments. The two parties have a majority in the Lords if they work together.

Away from parliament we have had the glorious demise of Toby Young, who is forever to be remembered for eugenics.

As it has become apparent that we are increasingly looking like we are on track for BINO, the EU have told us, that we should have sucked up a compromise proposal earlier and now the Norway Option is off the table as we fucked that up by taking too long to disagree amongst ourselves and being arses to EU citz. I paraphrase slightly here, but that's about he long and short of it. Instead we get the pleasure of 21 months of the EU interfering in our law without representation. And we are already locked into this. Now Leavers can moan about this, and shock horror, actually be correct about it too! Transition will be up to 31st Dec 2020 at the latest. Which realistically is still too soon, not that any lying arsed Brexiteer is willing to admit to this. Yet.

The only way to get out of this proposal for better terms? Either beg the EU for something there is no way they will give us or revoke / extend a50.

The fall out from May's reshuffle is still going on in slow motion. Rees-Mogg has got a bigger platform to spout shit he knows nothing about, admit that he has never changed a nappy nor wiped his own arse, thinks women should give birth to football teams, and how he has never visited IKEA and has no plans to do so. Johnson has tried to build bridges. And effed that one up again. Gove has made us all be obsessed by plastic straws and turn into environmental maniacs because no other minister is good at press releases and media stunts. Arch Remainac Liddington, got Deputy PM and took over Brexshit even more from DExEU. Hunt is in no way after becoming PM and Greening is really pissed and when straight back to lead from the Naughty Step.

To cut the long story short: they all hate May and think she's shit

There are thought to be nearly 48 letters to trigger a leadership election in Graham Brady's hands. But not quite. And its not about the letters its about needing 159 MPs to no confidence her... but that is starting to sound more and more plausible in the face of Brexshit hitting the fan.

We now have a leaked impact assessment that we really were not supposed to see which is slightly less worse than Project Fear. But not by much. Its supposed to be by DExEU. Its been suggested that its actually by alt-DExEU aka the Cabinet Department (Robbins and Liddington).

Anyway, nothing is decided. May might zombie on forever. She won't, she's in a crowded field of Tories with stakes. But that sub-committee meeting on Wed 7th Feb is crunch time for something or someone.

Tick tock, tick tock, went the Brexit Clock.

Oh yeah and there's going to be a trade war between the US and EU. And there's some stuff about a ex-Belize diplomat. And Trump's coming to visit us.

Richard Leonard has said there is growing evidence Labour will “almost certainly” vote against the final Brexit deal

In other news, there is growing evidence that the Pope is “almost certainly” a Catholic.

Steve stands with his flags, come rain, snow or shine outside the HOC, everyday since June 23 2016. He is a lovely peaceful fellow and this looks very intimidating and unpleasant from MP David Davies.

Hasn’t this all gone away yet. We realised we’d been stupid as a country, said sorry and really just want to stay in the eu now please. We didn’t actually mean it - now stop bluffing mrs May —mum— and let us get back to normal - we won’t vote out again

woman11017 · 05/02/2018 23:02

@Andrew_Adonis
Chris Grayling made untrue statements about me in the House of Commons today, in bid to deflect criticism after latest bailout of Virgin/Stagecoach. Extraordinary that a Secretary of State behaves in this way. I will be writing to the Cabinet Secretary tomorrow.

And hat trick: Zack Goldsmith's odd alleged note:

SusanWalker · 05/02/2018 23:31

How many lies have now been said in the commons in recent months? Impact statements for one, the JRM question and answer for another. There needs to be some kind of sanction for this. It seems like nothing is done.

On a different note I find it odd that brexiteers who want a no deal brexit are cross with Barnier for accepting that we are leaving the customs union. I think the issue is he didn't offer us cake. The most amusing comments centre around us retaliating with high tariffs on EU goods, because making everything even more expensive will really benefit the country. Hmm

Reading about the SDP. So much history repeating itself especially Origins and March 1973 Lincoln by-election.

HesterThrale · 06/02/2018 06:49

Interesting piece on Farming Today about leaving the Customs Union:

As Downing Street insists the UK will leave the customs union, we ask what might work for the agriculture industry. We hear from farming minister, George Eustice, and economist, Sean Rickard.

Rickard says the government are risking disaster in agriculture by leaving the CU. They're talking about a mythical non-tariff barrier system which 'exists nowhere else in the world'. It's worth a listen - it helped me understand it. From 8:40 to the end.

The government are 'aiming for' something impossible. It seems like a conspiracy of silence that they're all going along with. When is someone going to crack?

HesterThrale · 06/02/2018 07:15

In answer to my own question! Looks like Anna Soubry might crack. She's willing to leave the party if the ultras take over.

"If it comes to it I am not going to stay in a party which has been taken over by the likes of Jacob Rees-Mogg and Boris Johnson. They are not proper Conservatives."

Will she really? Will people follow her? Or will she be left isolated and ridiculed? Another exciting day in Westminster...

lonelyplanetmum · 06/02/2018 07:17

Hester's interesting link to 'farming today' highlighting the impossibility of the government's** (elusive )proposals made me think about where 'ambitions' ends and 'impossible' begins. (TM and DDs make regular references to 'ambitious' plans.)

I looked up the full meaning of Ambitious (of a plan or piece of work) intended to satisfy high aspirations and therefore difficult to achieve.
"an ambitious enterprise"** "an ambitious task"
synonyms: difficult, exacting, demanding, formidable, challenging, hard, arduous, onerous, tough, stiff, strenuous; bold, grandiose, extravagant, monumental;
informal-* killing, hellish; informal* -knackering;
archaic-** toilsome
Another definition said a plan which only the highly skilled can achieve.

Just thought I'd share this for the next time DD or TM utter 'ambitious' deal or partnership.

On a separate note the Daily Express have come up with a positive headline about Eastern Europeans, resulting from the BBC cabbage picking programme. Very odd for the Express to depart from its anti EU bile. Is the tide turning?

lonelyplanetmum · 06/02/2018 07:17

Bold fail Blush

lonelyplanetmum · 06/02/2018 07:24

That's interesting Hester . I was only thinking while driving yesterday how can any 'normal' Tory MP stand being under the same banner as JRM, Johnson etc. How can anyone do that?

It's like if you work somewhere with awful management, you either:
1.look for another place to join; or

  1. set up on your own; or
  2. work collectively to get sympathetic members of management to manoeuvre the dodgy managers out.

Ironically if there are any decent Tory MPs they need a union.

SummerLightning · 06/02/2018 07:58

Heidi Allen said a while back that if jrm were ever PM she would quit the party. Not heard her say it for a bit though... She seems to be mostly swerving controversy at the moment.

borntobequiet · 06/02/2018 08:16

Farming Today has consistently been excellent and even handed in its Brexit coverage, from well before the referendum. Their presenters and editors could teach the Today prog a thing or two.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/feb/01/irish-court-refuses-mans-extradition-because-of-brexit?CMP=share_btn_tw
Irish court refuses man's extradition because of Brexit
Supreme court judges rule UK will have left EU by the end of the company director’s sentence

The judgment it issued revealed the man is one of about 20 people in a similar position resisting removal to Britain on identical legal grounds.

The surprise decision in Dublin is an early sign of the disruption Brexit may inflict on legal cooperation across the continent. A fresh extradition treaty between the two countries could be needed.

Do they think the GFA is about to break and we are going to leave the ECHR?

Note this is from last week when we thought we would stay in customs union.

Adam wagner @ adamwagner1
1/ So I had a look into Theresa May's coming announcement that she will "consider a new offence to protect politicians and their families". For those who have been worrying that we don't need any new offences which potentially penalise political speech; well, wait for this...
2/ The proposals appears to be a report by Parliament's Committee on Public Life from last year (t.co/8coiUUOh91) on 'Intimidation in Public Life'. It sounds like the PM will be accepting many of the recommendations. The most controversial is the new offence...
3/ The recommendation is to create a new offence "in electoral law" of intimidating parliamentary candidates. Sounds sensible, right? But wait! What would it mean for political speech? And is a new criminal offence even needed?
4/ I'm afraid I have bad news for fans of this new offence. First of all, the committee that recommended it asked the police if they needed any new offences. It turns out that the police were very clear they don't. Here are a couple of very clear quotes from the report itself
5/ If that wasn't clear enough, here is the huge 'suite' of offences which are available to the police to manage harassment/violent threats etc against politicians whether on social media or not. Pretty comprehensive - that's why the police don't want a new offence.

6/ So why, you might ask, is the Committee recommending (and the Prime Minister taking up the idea of) a new offence? Well, this is where it gets murky. Here's the bit where they move from nobody asking for a new offence and recommending one. Try and follow this one, logic fans!
7/ So, to summarise, (i) there is "no evidence" that the current criminal law is insufficient, (ii) "no behaviour which is currently legal should be made illegal", (iii) but a new offence in electoral law is necessary to "highlight the seriousness of the threat of intimidation"
8/ I am calling this one. It's nonsense on stilts. It is clearly a case of "something must be done" and this is "something" so it must be done. It's irresponsible as even the police aren't calling for it but it will no doubt have a chilling effect on free speech around elections
9/ Remember free speech? How do you fancy police and CPS deciding - during elections! - what constitutes this extremely vague definition of intimidation 👇🏼. The police should be kept far away from having to make these kind of calls. This is a bad idea and should be binned /end

It's plainly in the national interest that MPs, MEPs and MSPs, who face a choice whether to approve Theresa May's deal, know what options are open to them if they don't. I will support an appeal against this decision - to the Supreme Court if necessary.

(More here - written before the decision. waitingfortax.com/2018/02/03/why-we-need-to-know-about-article-50/ )

You can read the decision of Lord Doherty here.

So, to summarise....there is no evidence that the current criminal law is insufficient

But the govt (which bangs on about wanting less red tape and has little time for anything other than relinquishing EU membership ) will bring in a new unnecessary law related to themselves anyway.

It is definitely a not!

Blimey, on the "Irexit". Not really a thing. Set up by Farage's grouping. Around 400 people. Seemingly more than a few English/British 'ex-pats' in audience. Well they are the audience for this stuff. Very few women. Quite a few young males; Farage and Trump admirers. And the few loopers who are really, really not representative of many people. Coughlan and Cormac Lucey. Oh and John Waters. A lot of touting of the British propaganda of German-Franco run org. Not really fertile soil for this overall, I'd imagine.

Laughing as there was a demonstration outside against the 'meeting'. From a group who are also anti-EU. But who were demonstrating against Farage as an Imperialist. Brilliant. Do they think Irish people have amnesia about certain big countries who did really take their sovereignty?
