Thanks, Faith. So the people I speak to on a daily basis and live next to are ruining your narrative by telling me what they think.

Moussemoose · 29/01/2018 17:49

When you vote you get on a bus with people. Look around at the other passengers on that bus. Does it make you feel comfortable? Will the other passengers use your tacit support of them in a good way. It's a consideration when voting.

The complexity of issues and the ability to think critically and long term is why we have a representative democracy. We are not trained as a populace to engage in direct democracy. All of us.

We should never have had a referendum.

@Moussemoose

What's the process to add Lords to the HoL? Seems the tories are lining up to do this ...

Moussemoose · 29/01/2018 18:34

Nominations to the Appointment Commission is a rolling process.

The HoL is packed though with about 800 active lords. An obvious attempt to 'pack' (everyone does it subtly) would be frowned upon, but this government is so incompetent yet entitled it's the type of stupid stunt they might try.

HoL can't stop legislation but they can delay and add amendments. HoL amendments tend to be well throughout and balanced. Again, throwing the amendment out would be 'bad form' but not unconstitutional.

Thank you for articulating what I was thinking.

It also reminds me of the concept of a "fellow traveller" ...

Doubletrouble99 · 29/01/2018 19:22

As far s I am aware TM has appointed far fewer piers than previous PMs.

CardinalSin · 29/01/2018 21:42

Ah, One of the biggest proponents of a Hard Brexit has got himself a Maltese passport.

That's nice...

Yes, he obviously, genuinely, believes that it's the best thing for the average people of the country then, not just something he can make pots and pots of money out of oh no not at all...

AgnesSkinner · 29/01/2018 22:34

Maltese passports are popular with the Russian elite too.

euobserver.com/justice/140512

Can’t think why ...

Owning a Maltese passport gives people the right to visa-free travel to 160 countries, including the US, and to live and move around their money anywhere in the EU.

CardinalSin · 29/01/2018 22:51

It also might be the only one I'm eligible to apply for!

CardinalSin · 29/01/2018 23:22

Sp now we know. According to DExEU, the UK will lose 2% GDP under soft Brexit, 5% under hard Brexit and 8% under no-deal.

Good job I'm getting back into growing my own veg this year. I'd do it anyway but anything that helps the household budget ....

LondonMum8 · 30/01/2018 07:46

The Brexit Farms. Sustenance veg farms. Too bad we can't grow rice.

gussyfinknottle · 30/01/2018 08:01

Now I have a name for my raised bed - to myself though. I'm telling my dd that it'll all be fine and Brexit won't change anything. The lies we tell our children .....

Doubletrouble99 · 30/01/2018 08:39

I'm sure we can import rice from elsewhere in the world Londonmum!

gussyfinknottle · 30/01/2018 08:49

On WTO rules it would cost a fortune.

OliviaD68 · 30/01/2018 08:53

@Doubletrouble99

Do you in all seriousness think the UK falling back on WTO would be fine for our economy?

On another note IDS is saying the leaked assessments should be ignored because they are negative and therefore meant to discredit Brexit. He's not the brightest.

CardinalSin · 30/01/2018 09:01

You do realise that there is a rice shortage? And China is busily buying up all supplies?

CardinalSin · 30/01/2018 09:02

Ah, the rolled IDS's trolley out to give "balance" to the BBC report did they? James O'Brien predicted that on twitter this morning...

CardinalSin · 30/01/2018 09:04

And presumably that means IDS thinks that the DExEU is trying to discredit Brexit.

Really not the sharpest tool that one...

Doubletrouble99 · 30/01/2018 09:19

I'm sure we could do a good free trade deal with some rice producers.

gussyfinknottle · 30/01/2018 09:23

Mongolia, maybe ...

JWIM · 30/01/2018 09:24

Why are you sure of that doubletrouble99? Which rice producing countries don't have a trading agreement with the EU?

Bear in mind that the agreements you are proposing will be with countries not individual/cooperative growers/farmers/producers of rice. And we have yet to establish our individual WTO member state status with the WTO so may not even have those rules/structures to rely on in negotiations.
