Hot Tramp, I love you so!

The European Parliament have agreed to progress talks to the next stage. Despite Brexiteers saying its not legally binding, it is apparent that the EU certainly disagree.

Not only that, but the wording of the deal goes further. It binds us to not being able to agree and new trade deals for 2 years.

The All Important Amendment 7 to the Great Repel Bill has been successful. May’s power grab has a set back.

By just FOUR votes the government was defeated. How May will be regretting that pointless election tonight.

Parliament will have a meaningful vote on the exit terms.

But don’t be too excited. Brussels might not like this as May can not guarantee the UK will agree to a deal. It means the the EU are negotiating with parliament NOT May now.

There is also the suggestion that the mood of parliament is changing and is beginning to lean more towards a EFTA / EEA type deal.

But equally this could also send us to the brink with a deal from the EU that could be rejected by parliament.

The stakes just got higher.

Very early days. You anti-Brexit types shouldn't get your hopes up too much. We are still leaving.

Of course Parliament will get a vote - between the deal we eventually drag out of the EU at 5 minutes to midnight, and WTO. What they won't get is the opportunity to demand changes to individual clauses.

We did vote leave to restore Parliamentary sovereignty but not over Brexit itself, which voters told the government to get on with in our fully binding Referendum. The EU can barely gain agreement among its own members and will pay no attention to what Parliament wants - they are not interested in democracy and will expect May or whoever is in charge then to simply ram any deal through. Was there meaningful Parliamentary debate on Maastricht or Lisbon? Of course not. They were presented as done deals. Major even went so far as to make the division on Maastricht a confidence vote.

The only way we will knock any sense into the EU is by telling them enough is enough, walking away and starting to prepare for no deal. If only we had some negotiators with the balls to do it....

And the Statutory Instruments you decry are the method by which the 12,000 EU laws, directives and regulations which we currently have to abide by were made into UK law.

BiglyBadgers · 13/12/2017 21:46

Oh look who's here and clearly has no clue at all about the amendment they are blathering on about. Hmm

Poor brexit snowflakes.

thecatfromjapan · 13/12/2017 21:46

I think we're well past the stage where reducing this sorry process to some domestic drama, using the language of 'Eastenders', has any traction. It rings hollow. It sounds just what it is: a massive misunderstanding of the reality of what the UK is embarking on (a ruinous economic and political decision) and a deliberate dumbing down.

I've long since come to the conclusion that the argument for "sovereignty" is just another thinly veiled form of xenophobia. Many brexiters don't actually care about parliamentary process, they just don't want us to follow rules that have had input from forriners. Doesn't matter what the rules are, just that (shock, horror Shock) Germany and France might have had input into them. I have heard this argument from the horses mouth IRL, one leave voter asked me if I really wanted to be friends with the French. Er, yeah, as our neighbours, I do. An old lady who was also present piped up and said "Would you rather be at war with them?!" Grin.

Bolshybookworm · 13/12/2017 22:22

And Ken Clarke- have heard that IRL he is a thoroughly decent person. This was from a strong left winger as well!

woman

Ikea Meatballs are tasty and swedish.

As are Vikings

Who are awesome

Peregrina · 13/12/2017 22:26

I went out, so have only just seen the result. My prayers were answered. Good to see that our MPs do value Parliamentary democracy. The country may have narrowly voted for Brexit in an advisory referendum, but who can really pretend that they voted for the unelected Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill's version of Brexit.

Glad to see that people like Dennis Skinner didn't rock the boat this time.

TheElementsSong · 13/12/2017 22:27

Sadly I doubt Chipolata Man has tasty foreign balls!

HashiAsLarry · 13/12/2017 22:28

Maybe foreign balls, but not tasty Wink

woman11017 · 13/12/2017 22:34

Tasty Swedish balls MrsR I'll have to have one of my tablets. Grin

Dominic Grieve is on Newsnight in a couple of minutes. Well done to him and the other Tory rebels.

LineyRunner · 13/12/2017 22:39

Cheers, just switching it on.

Sludgecolours · 13/12/2017 22:41

Go Dominic! Thank heavens someone has the courage of his convictions.

Sludgecolours · 13/12/2017 22:42

And DG has a brain to boot.

woman11017 · 13/12/2017 22:46

Thank you Butterymuffin.

Maryz · 13/12/2017 22:50

Just placemarking to catch up (as the news is confusing).

Does that mean that right up until the end parliament has the option to effecitvely veto Brexit?

And can someone confirm it was only Tory backbenchers not the DUP who voted against tonight. Thanks.
