Westministenders: Rebel Rebel Your Brexit is a Mess.

Hot Tramp, I love you so!

The European Parliament have agreed to progress talks to the next stage. Despite Brexiteers saying its not legally binding, it is apparent that the EU certainly disagree.

Not only that, but the wording of the deal goes further. It binds us to not being able to agree and new trade deals for 2 years.

The All Important Amendment 7 to the Great Repel Bill has been successful. May’s power grab has a set back.

By just FOUR votes the government was defeated. How May will be regretting that pointless election tonight.

Parliament will have a meaningful vote on the exit terms.

But don’t be too excited. Brussels might not like this as May can not guarantee the UK will agree to a deal. It means the the EU are negotiating with parliament NOT May now.

There is also the suggestion that the mood of parliament is changing and is beginning to lean more towards a EFTA / EEA type deal.

But equally this could also send us to the brink with a deal from the EU that could be rejected by parliament.

The stakes just got higher.

I am a little bit in love with Dominic Grieve this evening.

lonelyplanetmum · 13/12/2017 20:23

So happy! And also sad, that clinging onto a shred of proper democratic process was ever in issue in the way it was.

🐟 mat! Everlasting thanks to Red and learned posters.

LineyRunner · 13/12/2017 20:29

Finally, a glimpse of parliamentary sovereignty, not some subverted Maybot Supremacy.

Holliewantstobehot · 13/12/2017 20:32

Just had an email from lib dems as I signed their petition. As a PS they said if you have recently taken out membership there may be a delay as they have had as surge in people joining over the last week.

Is the tide turning? Is it at the point where you can't quite tell if it's going in or out?

woman11017 · 13/12/2017 20:32

Govt immediately hints it will try to strike out Amendment 7 at Report Stage Good luck with that one boys.

Mucho handbag dropping CCHQ.

@NadineDorries
Tonight, the Tory rebels have put a spring in Labours step, given them a taste of winning, guaranteed the party a weekend of bad press, undermined the PM and devalued her impact in Brussels. They should be deselected and never allowed to stand as a Tory MP, ever again.

squoosh · 13/12/2017 20:34

Farage has tweeted 'My contempt for career politicians knows no bounds'

Hmmmm, this from the man who is happy to pocket his MEP salary for doing sweet fuck all.

TheElementsSong · 13/12/2017 20:34

Thanks for the new thread RTB and I'm sure we're all (especially Leavers Hmm) celebrating our Parliamentary democracy this evening.

woman11017 · 13/12/2017 20:39

Kate McCann‏Verified account @KateEMcCann
Worth noting for next week - Anna Soubry said earlier there are MORE Tories prepared to vote against the Government on the Brexit date stuff than there were tonight...

lalalonglegs · 13/12/2017 20:41

Smiling like a lunatic and place marking Wine. I wonder what headline from hell the back bench at the Daily Mail are dreaming up for tomorrow's front page?

It would be nice to think that they are getting a taste for democracy after all these months.

MangoSplit · 13/12/2017 20:43

Place marking. Thanks Red.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 13/12/2017 20:49

The date has a chance of not being nailed down Shock

Not sure I remember how to cope with feeling such hope

Eeeeeowwwfftz · 13/12/2017 20:53

Is the vote meaningful in any meaningful sense, though? (I.e., would not Brexiting after all be a possible outcome?)

Or what happens if Davies comes back with 'no deal'. Lots of ways this could be very very shit.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 13/12/2017 20:53

Guy Verhofstadt
@guyverhofstadt
British Parliament takes back control. European and British Parliament together will decide on the final agreement. Interests of the citizens will prevail over narrow party politics. A good day for democracy.

DrizzleHair · 13/12/2017 20:56

Another voice asking what this means? What is a meaningful vote - what happens if Parliament vote against the deal struck?

LurkingHusband · 13/12/2017 20:58

.

mrsreynolds · 13/12/2017 21:04

Thanks red

Feeling more hopeful than I have in a while....

thecatfromjapan · 13/12/2017 21:13

I guess we'll see (those asking what will happen if the vote goes against the "final deal"). The pint is that there is now (for the moment, anyway) pressure on the executive to produce some sort of deal that stands a chance of not being voted against. That's leverage - and good for democracy.

20nil · 13/12/2017 21:17

I have no words left to describe Kate Hoey. I don’t know how she sleeps at night.

thecatfromjapan · 13/12/2017 21:17

I'm taking today as a good day. So much bad news, for so long. A little bit of sunshine before Christmas - I'm welcoming it.

Alabama in the morning, now this before bedtime.

So grateful for those who value democracy. Flowers

LineyRunner · 13/12/2017 21:20

The Mail Online (I looked so you don't have to) is running with the headline 'May Humiliated'.

They really think they can control her.

BiglyBadgers · 13/12/2017 21:25

Or what happens if Davies comes back with 'no deal'. Lots of ways this could be very very shit.

My understanding is that the vote includes the possibility of no deal. So they still have to take it to parliament before they can go ahead and leave without a deal. My reading is that Parliament can basically refuse to leave and make the Government go back and ask the EU to let us stay. Now I think this is very unlikely and the EU might just laugh I our faces (thought the tweet from Verhofstadt suggests to me they would listen), but it also reduces the chance of no deal happening as I think that would place Parliament in a position where many MPs would feel they had to vote against it.

Whatever happened it would certainly be...interesting

LizzieSiddal · 13/12/2017 21:38

It’s so ironic that the Leavers “we want our sovereignty back” brigade, are so against OUR parliament having a say in this deal!

woman11017 · 13/12/2017 21:38

the vote includes the possibility of no deal
little Steve Baker looked like the saddest little brexit bunny in the world.

Worth tweeting Stephen Hammond whose lost a post as a result: tory heroes. There I've said it! Only the Hoey and Field were labour 'rebels'.
