Can anyone defend today's shambolic events?

So it seems TM decided to ignore the fact the DUP has said all along they wouldn't support different rules for NI and tell the EU that that was how we are planning to resolve the border issue.

Then Arlene points out that they weren't bluffing and will not support it so TM has to back track.

It's a fucking joke.

TM and her government continue to think everyone else will just back down if they plough on with their arrogant plans.

When are they going to get real?

Seriously, is there any defence for this staggering display of incomptentence?

Interesting how all the Brexit papers have ignored the breakdown in talks with the EU on their front pages. Anyone would think it's another no news day.

Eve · 05/12/2017 10:26

shhhfastasleep - good point!

Karatema · 05/12/2017 10:30

2019 will arrive, nothing will be agreed, the ROI will be made to put a hard border in place by the EU and ALL HELL will break loose. Everyone will blame the UK! Hmm

sashh · 05/12/2017 10:35

My cat could have told her what the reaction of the DUP would have been! How could anyone possibly be even slightly surprised?

LOL

TM seems to be permanently surprised.

Surprised to be PM, surprised not to win a land slide, suprised DUP asked for money, suprised the EU are not happy...

CheeriosEverywhere · 05/12/2017 10:43

Could you be more confused? Ireland won't be made to do anything by the EU, they are part of the EU. Neither want a hard border. If the UK doesn't find a solution to this problem which they caused then they will be forcing that border. And yes, it will be very bad.
Of course everyone will blame the UK, because it is entirely their fault!

How can anyone believe this rubbish about the UK being forced into anything or unfairly blamed? The EU was happy how it was, no-one wanted Brexit. But the UK insisted and it happened and they said we are leaving you. But then expects everyone else to do all the arrangements and sort out the details?

purits · 05/12/2017 10:48

The EU was happy how it was, no-one wanted Brexit.

Confused Apart from the majority in the UK. But let's brush over little details like that.

IsaSchmisa · 05/12/2017 10:55

Actually, only a minority of the UK voted for Brexit. Don't make the mistake of thinking a majority of votes cast must be the same thing as a majority of the population, or even the electorate.

Humpsfor20yards · 05/12/2017 10:59

Plus the Vote leave campaign is under investigation for misuse of funds. And they lied - they have admitted they lied.

Still let's brush over details like that.

CheeriosEverywhere · 05/12/2017 11:00

Brush over it? From the post you quoted The EU was happy how it was, no-one wanted Brexit. But the UK insisted and it happened and they said we are leaving you

Did you stop reading after one sentence? Theresa is that you?

purits · 05/12/2017 11:08

And they lied - they have admitted they lied.
Hold the front page: politician lies shocker!
Despite what you would like to think not everyone believed the distortion of facts. Also, they voted on more than one piece of evidence.

Plus the Vote leave campaign is under investigation for misuse of funds.
Whereas, as we all know, the EU's handling of funds is squeaky clean.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 05/12/2017 11:09

I think it was orchestrated.

It has shown, practically & in very sharp relief that the EU cannot presume that UK will accept 'anything' as they have so far seemed to assume.

It's not just the hard-line Brexiters who are intransigent, it's the hard-Line Remainers too, as well as the unique situation within the island of Ireland.

The only way that a mutually successful outcome can be reached is if a bespoke agreement can be agreed, not an 'off the shelf' solution.

CheeriosEverywhere · 05/12/2017 11:18

There isn't an agreement that is acceptable to everyone, that is the point.
A hard border between NI and Ireland is not acceptable. A sea border between NI and GB is not acceptable. No border of any kind is not acceptable. A special arrangement for NI separate to GB is not acceptable. Anything that aligns NI to Ireland and away from GB is not acceptable.
Doing nothing is not acceptable.

Humpsfor20yards · 05/12/2017 11:23

Despite what you would like to think not everyone believed the distortion of facts.

Lets vote again then.

IsaSchmisa · 05/12/2017 11:30

What did hardline Remainers have to do with the events yesterday?

Bearbehind · 05/12/2017 11:30

It has shown, practically & in very sharp relief that the EU cannot presume that UK will accept 'anything' as they have so far seemed to assume.

faith I have no idea where you are coming from with that comment Hmm

Yesterday wasn't about the UK 'accepting' something, it was about them offering something that they didn't have the power to offer.

It would be the democratic will of the people as much as any other vote, wouldn't it?

Or would the previous non binding advisory referendum be the only democratic will of the people, ever?

Maybe the manipulative canard which has everyone on the back foot is being looked at in the light of day.

purits · 05/12/2017 11:31

Lets vote again then.

Another EU favourite. Keep voting until the electorate give the 'correct' answer.
You had your chance. You weren't convincing at the time and I doubt that you would be if we ran it again. Last I heard, opinion was moving even more in favour of Leave.

Humpsfor20yards · 05/12/2017 11:32

Who are the hard-Line Remainers?

Cailleach1 · 05/12/2017 11:33

And then they withdrew it, saying it hadn't really been agreed amongst themselves.

IsaSchmisa · 05/12/2017 11:33

If opinion is moving even further over to Leave, then Leavers won't mind doing it again. After all, if you get a bigger majority that can only strengthen your position!

CheeriosEverywhere · 05/12/2017 11:33

Ok purits, you were for Brexit and are still for it. What is your suggestion for the border problem, and do you think it has been handled well so far?

Humpsfor20yards · 05/12/2017 11:34

Last I heard, opinion was moving even more in favour of Leave.

No, I think as people have gradually realized that what they was told was lies and seen the risk to our security and economy Brexit poses, they have moved towards remain.

Humpsfor20yards · 05/12/2017 11:35

What is your suggestion for the border problem,

Oh Brexitteers can't answer 'complicated stuff' like that. Leave it to the politicians, innit.

Cailleach1 · 05/12/2017 11:36

"Keep voting until the electorate give the 'correct' answer."

When did that happen before, purits?

And don't bullshit the Irish by saying it was in Ireland. Another favourite bald faced lie of Brexiteers.

The issues which worried the electorate in the first referendum in each case were dealt with so people were not voting with modification.

Now, do say where it happened elsewhere. Or was the lie the only example?

Cailleach1 · 05/12/2017 11:37

without modification. Very important typo
