The big developments are that the government have signalled they are prepared to pay more and to involve the ECJ when it comes to citizens rights on condition that we move to talk of trade. But no apparent progress on NI. Which is significant with Ireland threatening to veto.

The EU has not changed its stance at all. Since Day 1.

There is always a worrying omission and lack of commitment to retain the Charter of Fundamental Rights. The bonfire begins.

Talk is of Green still going in a reshuffle, possibly with Gove replacing him as Deputy PM.

Coalition talks in Germany have broken down, and the British have got excited about it, whilst the German response have largely been a slight shrug.

Its been a much quieter week, despite the budget. Thank goodness. There are lots of outstanding issues that are lurking in the background like the Green one though.

The main message coming from the budget, has not been any new policy, but the dreadful economic forecast for the next few years.

mshoolie My M P thinks I am being overly "doom-laden."
Too bloody right.

Cailleach1 · 23/11/2017 20:03

Yes, the longbows will be remembered. You seem to think I am disrespecting the archers in some way. I am not. Yes the longbows were most amazing. But it is a bit WWI ish. Any lives lost were because of a greedy King's coveting land and power. Those fighting were used as tools. Used and abused. In a feudal system. I am not saying they were not brave or skilled.

It is an interesting bit of history. about how battles are lost and won. How simple things can gain the upper hand and stupid mistakes can turn everything around. Anyways the French fared much worse. The cream of their generation were lost.

Cailleach1 · 23/11/2017 20:10

It may be for the GCSE syllabus. Don't know if it was implemented. Went to a school and the history teacher was telling about a new planned syllabus. I'll be at this stage soon wrt youngster, so may look at the topics.

Now I know that everyone has to be called English, you cannot call them the Celts, Britons, Vikings, Romans, Normans, Huguenots, Dutch/Flemish (with the Orange Willie), any Germans with the Georges etc, etc, etc.

Peregrina, you should have been sent out to get a few sweets and comics or to raid a few apple orchards rather than pondering on all that at 8yrs. It cannot have been good for you.

OlennasWimple · 23/11/2017 20:11

My "gold plated" pension has been messed around with multiple times over my career.

I have more or less given up on it - once upon a time it was a real "golden handcuffs", keeping me in the public sector. Now? Not so much

Cailleach1 · 23/11/2017 20:23

Can someone tell me what the pain of austerity for a decade was for? The debt/deficit issue has been abandoned. All the gains of any pain wiped out for Brexit. And now the suffering is just beginning. Nobody even knows the breadth of the impact. Certainly not the gov't who are the ones who are supposed to be implementing alternative regulation. I am astounded at the stuff they have been let get away with. And an electorate who votes them in.

QuentinSummers · 23/11/2017 20:29

YES! I am so upset by this. Especially all the public sector workers who have had no real pay increase for years and are still capped. For an abandoned target, money for the DUP and Brexit Angry
Labour should be ashamed of their lack of oppositon here too

mrsreynolds · 23/11/2017 20:32

Wait a minute!
You mean we're not "all in this together"???
😠😠😠

Holliewantstobehot · 23/11/2017 20:32

They're getting away with it because the opposition is hopeless and so is the media. Labour should be so far ahead in the polls right now and they're not which speaks volumes.
Did anyone watch the documentary on labour in the run up to the last election? It was fascinating watching knowing how it was going to end and I thought Stephen and Neil Kinnock's relationship was lovely. But I was worried about the moderate members seeming to be pushed out by momentum. I would love to see a more centre left, anti brexit leader but I did join the party so I could vote in the next leadership election so hopefully I will get the opportunity.

TheElementsSong · 23/11/2017 20:42

It was to prepare us for the further umpty-um decades in the wilderness to come? Also, something Sovereignty something Control something something Worth It, something about Remoaners having No Soul, but something Believe in Britain and Think Positive.

frumpety · 23/11/2017 20:55

Hang on forgot about the Eeyore front page of the DM this morning which mentioned nurses as benefactors of the great and good budget ? Still trying to work out how ? Ideas anyone ?

Apologies to lh

None needed Smile. Keep posting !

LurkingHusband · 23/11/2017 21:03

Didn't say the participants weren't English/Welsh, but the ones at the Helm of England were descendants /successors of the Norman Conquest*

I keep on posting this Smile, but it always seems incredible how much of the land William distributed in 1066 is still in the same families

www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2014/10/last-1000-years-families-owned-england/

That brings us to today. According to The Guardian, 70% of Britain’s land remains in the hand of less than 1% of its population, with a mere 160,000 families owning 66% of it. More troubling, Queen Elizabeth II remains the nominal owner of every bit of land in England, and every landowner is technically just a tenant (who pays rent in the form of loyalty).

To teach the untermensch their place.

Mightybanhammer · 23/11/2017 21:09

"Keep posting" - I will Grin

Mightybanhammer · 23/11/2017 21:12

frumpetyyes I understand. If the economy tanks it will surely affect everyone.

LurkingHusband · 23/11/2017 21:14

If the economy tanks it will surely affect everyone.

Falling tide, though. As long as it hits other people before me, I'll be alright (Jack).

mrsreynolds I believe the ‘all in this together’ slogan was quietly ditched when began to become something of an embarrassment.

GaspodeWonderCat · 23/11/2017 21:34

My Country: a work in progress BBC iplayer. Carole Anne Duffy, National theatre and 'words' from members of the Britsih public. Interesting, funny, annoying work about Brexit and the aftermath ... How long will Britannia remain united? .... Worth a watch.

woman11017 · 23/11/2017 21:34

@TechnicallyRon
In all fairness Brits probably don't do Thanksgiving because if we had to take a day off for the anniversary of us fucking over a native people and ruining their country we'd never have to go to work.

Cailleach1 · 23/11/2017 21:39

If the economy tanks it will surely affect everyone

Redwood has already advised people to get their money out of the country. Loads of lolly resting in offshore tax avoidance or dodging accounts, too. Don't worry, that won't be drawn on to make up any shortfall for health, education or public infrastructure.

BigChocFrenzy · 23/11/2017 21:40

Thee's usually a small % of people who gain, in any economic crash, those whose business actually expands, e.g. Wonga

BigChocFrenzy · 23/11/2017 21:47

In case you thought May's decision to go for a Hard Brexit was the result of long debate of the pros and cons ...

She decided it with Nick Timothy, shortly before her first party conference as leader
Timothy was a Brexiter who could spoonfeed her lines to get applause from other Brexiters

The wheels soon came off because he couldn't spoon-feed her how to win a GE or to produce unicorns out of her arse for Brexit

Peregrina · 23/11/2017 21:53

Now I know that everyone has to be called English,
The Guardian had a piece today on the Irish border. They quoted an Irishman (not sure which part) saying he couldn't see why the border couldn't be in the Irish Sea, to let the English deal with it. But, but, but - I think there is a ferry from Liverpool but otherwise two of the Ferry routes run from Wales, and one from Scotland. So it seems that everyone falls into the trap.

woman11017 · 23/11/2017 21:55

She decided it with Nick Timothy , Spooky, BigChoc these national disasters are usually accidental. Chapman mentioned in that article, predicted so much and is now so silent.
Many similarities with pre war Yugoslavia, when a desire for political power tempted the deputy prime minister to spout nationalist bile, and the rest was history.

Cailleach1 · 23/11/2017 21:58

Power in Westminster, though. Very much English in control. except for the DUP
