Westministenders: Money, money, money

The big developments are that the government have signalled they are prepared to pay more and to involve the ECJ when it comes to citizens rights on condition that we move to talk of trade. But no apparent progress on NI. Which is significant with Ireland threatening to veto.

The EU has not changed its stance at all. Since Day 1.

There is always a worrying omission and lack of commitment to retain the Charter of Fundamental Rights. The bonfire begins.

Talk is of Green still going in a reshuffle, possibly with Gove replacing him as Deputy PM.

Coalition talks in Germany have broken down, and the British have got excited about it, whilst the German response have largely been a slight shrug.

Its been a much quieter week, despite the budget. Thank goodness. There are lots of outstanding issues that are lurking in the background like the Green one though.

The main message coming from the budget, has not been any new policy, but the dreadful economic forecast for the next few years.

Oh but plans for state visit remain in place

This is a disgrace. I have just signed a petition to the American Ambassador protesting. I think it needs a protest to No.10 itself. A fat lot of good it will do, because Theresa May is totally tin eared.

NEW: Michel Barnier: The UK turned its back on Europe's fight against Daesh with Brexit vote

Laura Kuenssberg‏ @bbclaurak
This may turn into quite the row.... Barnier speech 'rather than stay shoulder to shoulder with the Union, the British chose to be on their own again' - he was speaking in broader context but it will properly wind some people up

Laura Bicker‏ @BBCLBicker
This is the husband of murdered MP Jo Cox. She was killed by someone who shouted “Britain first”

Brendan Cox‏ @MrBrendanCox
Trump has legitimised the far right in his own country, now he’s trying to do it in ours. Spreading hatred has consequences & the President should be ashamed of himself.

twitter.com/channel4news/status/935599685611515904 this is (hopefully!) a very depressing channel 4 voxpop on Northern Ireland showing just how much less than nothing many people know about it.

The article posted above on turning conservatives into liberals made me wonder whether the Remain campaign had been even worse than it looked in that it triggered fear > fear for safety of the "group"> stop all immigration> OUT

Michel Barnier: The UK turned its back on Europe's fight against Daesh with Brexit vote

James Cleverly‏ @JamesCleverly
I find myself having to disagree.

I have to say I agree with James Cleverly. We are going full on Islamophobic and still have a far right President visiting.

@redtoothbrush

Where did Barnier say this? I see the headline but not in a quote.

Can you link to that petiton peregrina??

Update on Article 50 Challenge

The government's response to our ‘letter of claim' has just been received. We are pleased to report that our confidence in our case based on positive advice is undiminished.

Next steps

Our solicitors and Gwion Lewis and Hugh Mercer QC of counsel will be in conference next week. Proceedings will be issued as soon as possible. We shall report further on this after the conference with counsel has taken place. For more, see updates at www.crowdjustice.com/case/a50-chall-her-e50/

lalalonglegs · 29/11/2017 16:29

@Olivia It was slightly more nuanced than the headline:

“[Brexit] was a decision taken against the backdrop of a strategic repositioning by our American ally, which has gathered pace since the election of Donald Trump. It was a decision that came after a series of attacks on European soil, committed by young people who grew up in Europe, in our countries. It was a decision that came six months after the French Minister of Defence issued a call for solidarity to all his European counterparts to join forces to fight the terrorism of Daesh. Never had the need to be together, to protect ourselves together, to act together been so strong, so manifest. Yet rather than stay shoulder to shoulder with the Union, the British chose to be on their own again.”

OliviaD68 · 29/11/2017 16:31

@lalalonglegs

And certainly more appropriate. The headline is inflammatory. What I read here is more dismay than disdain. But the last phrase is a bit iffy. Clearly frustrated.

Trump: PM spokesperson says plans for state visit remain in place > Should add that the PM was in Iraq when story broke and is now enroute to Saudi Arabia. Could position shift when she gets fully across what's going on?

Link to letter to American Ambassador about Trump's tweets.

Update from the EU Parliament. Looks like the money is not going to be enough: they want more on EU citizens and a guarantee that the whole of the GFA is upheld, i.e. no hard border.

OliviaD68 · 29/11/2017 17:05

@usuallydormant

This is making the outcome increasingly binary. Stay or crash out.

Anyone see anything else happening? EFTA?

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 29/11/2017 17:08

FFS. Jayda Fransen's being interviewed by the BBC.

prettybird · 29/11/2017 17:09

Surprise, surprise Confused although I brt the hard line Brexiteers will indeed claim it as a surprise and be outraged Hmm

The EU had always said that sufficient progress had to be made on all three topics - not just the finance (aka the "divorce bill") but also Ireland/NI (and GFA agreement) and EU/UK citizens rights (the 3 million) Confused before Trade Talks could begin Confused

Which bit of what DD agreed to back in June could the UK Government not understand? Can they not read? Confused don't answer that Wink

HashiAsLarry · 29/11/2017 17:09

I did suspect the key word in that Barnier headline was Europe's, and tbh on that front it's hard to disagree with. Especially given one of tm's earliest attempts at blackmail.

HashiAsLarry · 29/11/2017 17:11

I'm not sure it's lack of being able to read or hear. I think it's more to do with the Tories thinking anything is solvable if you throw enough money at it.

prettybird · 29/11/2017 17:14

Fair point Hashi

They're wrong. Some things you can't put a price on. Like peace Sad

LurkingHusband · 29/11/2017 17:15

I did suspect the key word in that Barnier headline was Europe's

As with so many things the Brexiteers couldn't be bothered with, there's nuance and context.

The EU is not "Europe" ( the final countdown !!!!!). Nor is the EC the EU. Nor the parliament. As with "Britain", "Europe" can be a statement of geography, or politics or culture depending on context.

lalalonglegs · 29/11/2017 17:25

I think it's more to do with the Tories thinking anything is solvable if you throw enough money at it.

It's odd really as their normal MO is to remove as much money as possible and tell everyone that things will only improve if they become more efficient...

Reposting from other thread, might give useful results.

@MartinSLewis
Today's twitter poll: Had you known, at the time of the Brexit vote, the UK'd end up paying up to €50bn to leave EU, and all the other shenanigans, how would you have voted? (compared to what you did vote)

In a weird continuation of the retro vibe, I see a war criminal has gone old-style and committed suicide by cyanide (educated guess).

The BBC have put a warning on that video.
