The big developments are that the government have signalled they are prepared to pay more and to involve the ECJ when it comes to citizens rights on condition that we move to talk of trade. But no apparent progress on NI. Which is significant with Ireland threatening to veto.

The EU has not changed its stance at all. Since Day 1.

There is always a worrying omission and lack of commitment to retain the Charter of Fundamental Rights. The bonfire begins.

Talk is of Green still going in a reshuffle, possibly with Gove replacing him as Deputy PM.

Coalition talks in Germany have broken down, and the British have got excited about it, whilst the German response have largely been a slight shrug.

Its been a much quieter week, despite the budget. Thank goodness. There are lots of outstanding issues that are lurking in the background like the Green one though.

The main message coming from the budget, has not been any new policy, but the dreadful economic forecast for the next few years.

Most Irish people wouldn't wince. My mother brought up in a native Irish speaking community. Names not anglicised. So, just used to the correct version. But language is fluid. Another pronunciation that feels strange to the ear is the US entrepreneur. With ure turned into 'ewer' ending instead of 'er.'

woman "£1000 fines for homeless,"
Are homeless people going to be fined?

LurkingHusband · 27/11/2017 21:36

I’ve had discussion where people were going on. and on about how people were claiming disability benefits were all scroungers who were just avoiding to go to work.

But then remember the Home Office insists that people found not guilty by a court are really offenders-in-waiting.

And, of course, everyone "doesn't mean you" when talking about immigrants ...

Cailleach1 · 27/11/2017 21:37

Ah, ta Lala.

Not to be contrary, but that is not the pronunciation. It is more Koll Yuck.

squoosh · 27/11/2017 21:43

The increasingly ugly attitude from certain Brexity quarters towards Ireland is really boiling my blood. Kate Hoey and her ravings this morning and now this corker of a tweet from Jeremy Warner of the Telegraph.

'The point is that the Irish border is about so much more than economics and trade. It's hundreds years of history; Ireland has poisoned UK politics and brought down governments for centuries, and may well do so again.'

Troublesome little colony causing so much upset for her betters.

squoosh · 27/11/2017 21:45

American pronunciations of Irish names are always amusing!

Peregrina · 27/11/2017 21:46

Cailleach - so Maureen is little Mary. Thanks for explaining. Obviously the person who got Maureen wrong was misinformed too. Am I correct in thinking that Kathleen is the anglicisation of Caitlín? Is Fionn mac Cumhail the person I have heard MIL pronounce as Finn McCool? MIL of Irish extraction, although we found that DH's Irish granny was born in England, at a time when the UK was Britain and Ireland - so no Irish passport for him looks possible.

Having grown up in Wales, I have some understanding of the problems, and it frustrates me that people don't even try to find out how things should be pronounced.

Peregrina · 27/11/2017 21:52

But strangely most people can now manage Siobhan, and Niamh, so why don't they stop to think that this will apply to other names?

mrsreynolds · 27/11/2017 21:56

Tbh I expected this wrt Ireland/the irish
It'll get worse too

lalalonglegs · 27/11/2017 21:57

Apologies Blush. (I was surprised that that was the "correct" pronunciation, it sounded quite English.)

Jesus, that Twitter thread is horrific.

HashiAsLarry · 27/11/2017 22:09

mrsr you and me both. We called what seems like a very long time ago Sad

BigChocFrenzy · 27/11/2017 22:10

Look at what Meghan posted on the 2 Jul demo last year against Brexit !
Looks like she was there

lalalonglegs · 27/11/2017 22:12

That's going to be the first nail in her coffin as far as the tabloids are concerned.

AgnesSkinner · 27/11/2017 22:16

Was Channel 5 always planning to show the programme about Wallis Simpson, the American divorcee that almost broke the Royal Family, on Wednesday?

BigChocFrenzy · 27/11/2017 22:19

Trump is normally the fastest Tweeter in the West and should love the glamour of a Royal wedding.
Apparently though, he has been strangely laggard in offering congratulations Hmm

Might have something to so with his long history of hate towards African Americans - about the only thing he ever has been consistent about

lonelyplanetmum · 27/11/2017 22:35

Yay so Meghan is pro EU, Catholic, divorced and mixed race. Is also cool about marrying into a Greek/German family and works with the UN. Hopefully her beauty will endear her to the tabloids...
Randomly today I went past an old Jaeger store and was a little sad as I remembered an aunt who loved it!

I know I'm not getting behind the exit and being positive but there has ben all this fuss about 150 jobs from Merck. Iirc household names that have gone into liquidation due to weaker pound and the exit uncertainty Include:

Jaeger
Travis Perkins
Monarch
Multiyork
Shoe City
Rivington pink wafer biscuits
Southern salads
Lowcostholidays,
Hewden

And those with moves or cuts include?
Jamie Oliver
Lloyds of London
Hiscox
Goldman Sachs
jP Morgan
Standard chartered
UBS
Deutsche Bank

When this news reaches our learned cabinet members what do they think? It's a coincidence? This would have happened anyway? Surely these cumulative losses are focussing their minds. What does it take for any alarm bells to start ringing.Just venting really. As you were.

HesterThrale · 27/11/2017 22:47

Meghan is also ostensibly a feminist. Can't be a bad thing.

Peregrina · 27/11/2017 22:53

The Royal Wedding is going to give the Mail problems surely? Staunch Royalists in the jingoistic mould, but Meghan ticks all the wrong boxes. Oh dear, where is my hanky, to wipe away my crocodile tears.

RedToothBrush · 28/11/2017 00:05

Last Royal wedding cost 20million

I hope that Theresa sends a letter to the Queen stating that the government will only pay reasonable costs like she sent to Andy Burnham.

Holliewantstobehot · 28/11/2017 00:25

I don't expect the queens very happy with TM at the moment anyway. I would love to be a fly on the wall at one of their meetings with TM trying to explain why everything is going to shit. I'm no royalist but I bet the queen pulls no punches.

missmoon · 28/11/2017 06:09

I'm a republican, but I have to say that Meghan sounds pretty great. I just feel sorry for her and the scrutiny she's about to receive.

So not a Catholic wedding then, unless she can persuade the Church to annul her previous marriage

Not that I care much at all about these things, being Irish and all, but afaik if her previous wedding was not a RC ceremony and her first husband was not RC, then there is no need for an annulment. Even if her first H was a RC, if not a RC wedding - for eg. an exchange of vows on a beach with a civil official officiating - then no annulment needed. Basically as far as the RC church is concerned, she had a civil marriage and a civil divorce if these conditions are met. (I have no knowledge of her previous arrangements).

...graduating from Northwestern University School of Communication in 2003 www.bbc.com/news/uk-42137179

I get the impression from the BBC coverage that the author of this piece believes that Markle graduated from some third rate diploma mill. Just a hunch.

The right way to describe her alma mater, certainly the way you would if you were familiar with Northwestern U, would be 'Northwestern University's School of Communication'.

Northwestern is an extremely selective university located in Evanston, just north of Chicago. You have to be exceptionally bright to be admitted.

Bolshybookworm · 28/11/2017 06:42

I was impressed when I heard she'd been to Northwestern. She's a smart cookie.

AgnesSkinner · 28/11/2017 07:05

Sounds like she married her previous husband at a luxury hotel in Jamaica - so we might well get the full Royal Wedding experience.
