Is Anybody Making Personal Plans For Brexit?

Very worried about it.

I have some savings, not loads, just a few thousand. I'm thinking maybe I should convert it into foreign currency. What do others think? I have a holiday aboard planned next year, I've converted all the spending money we'll need already and plan to pay for meals etc while we're there in cash.

I've been saving as much money as I can, our mortgage still has another eight years to run. I really need a new car and we had planned to get a new kitchen as ours is falling apart but don't think I can risk spending money on stuff like that now. At the same time I want to take my children abroad as much as we can now as I don't think we'll be able to afford to post 2019.

I wish we could leave the country for the EU but it's just not easy for us, no access to foreign passports, children settled in really good schools, and not easily transferable jobs.

For context, I'll almost certainly be losing my job because of Brexit in 2019, not sure what will happen with my husbands job, don't think he'll lose it but it will be negatively affected.

Is anybody else making plans to try to mitigate Brexit? If so any more suggestions for us?

Here is your evidence. There's plenty more if you want it.

TheElementsSong · 11/10/2017 10:31

worldis

It's all bias!!!!1!!!!

So look! The evidence is itself evidence that there is no evidence!

M4Dad · 11/10/2017 10:32

But I expect HMRC are making it up

What's that actually showing? Migrant's pay tax? Well of course they do. Just because you pay tax it doesn't mean you have a positive impact on the economy.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 11/10/2017 10:37

Everyone who works contributes to society and the economy. From road sweeper to surgeon.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 11/10/2017 10:37

Oh I give up.
So the fact that they pay more in tax than they take?
What evidence would be sufficient for you? Please be specific and il sure I can help.

I think you'd have better luck talking to a wall, Theworld.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 11/10/2017 10:42

Sorry to derail the thread. However this has just confirmed my plans.

ImminentDisaster · 11/10/2017 10:44

Same, Theworld. It probably sounds incredibly patronising, but I feel really sorry for people who aren't planning for Brexit.

M4Dad · 11/10/2017 10:45

I never mentioned society, I only mentioned economy.

What you fail to realise is that just because you pay tax it does not mean you are a net contributer to the costs of running the country. You are in fact, in most cases, a drain on the country.

M4Dad · 11/10/2017 10:47

Let's also not bother talking about how immigration has driven down wages for the semi and unskilled people of this country.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 11/10/2017 10:49

Should we kick British people out who “are a drain on the economy?”. The problem is the economic system and the fact that some very important jobs such as care work are not highly regarded which is a scandal.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 11/10/2017 10:50

I have to go now otherwise I might be rude.
M4 Dad I presume you know about confirmation bias?

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-24813467

Twofishfingers · 11/10/2017 10:50

But there are plenty of UK nationals who are a drain on the economy. Probably millions of Old people are. One of the biggest drains of the nhs are elderly people and the face that they live longer and need more healthcare, care in the home, etc. Maybe we should kick them out and see if it has a positive impact on the economy?

M4Dad · 11/10/2017 10:53

....and here is one contradicting that:

www.migrationwatchuk.org/briefing-paper/235

Funny how the BBC never thought to mention this one, that's why I mentioned bias.

RhiannonOHara · 11/10/2017 10:53

That report says that in the semi/unskilled services sector, 'a 10 percentage point rise in the proportion of immigrants is associated with a 2 percent reduction in pay.' Which is pretty minor.

Also 'Where immigrants come from — EU or non-EU — appears to have no impact on our economy wide results; with the impact within the semi/unskilled services sector being small.'

So leaving the EU won't really solve this issue. And how many unskilled migrants from outside the EU are going to want to come here or be allowed to come here to fill any jobs vacated or unfilled by UK or EU nationals? India has already made it clear that they would like easier visa conditions in return for any decent trade deal. Theresa May didn't seem very keen on that.

Of course, the real question here is why don't companies pay people (EU, UK, whatever) decently and why don't the government crack down on that? That has nothing to do with EU membership.

RhiannonOHara · 11/10/2017 10:55

MigrationWatch is itself biased.

Not any more. They are used as a reference point by Full Fact.org

Britain through the empire, colonising other nations cannot argue about nationalism and identity being under threat. Uk voluntarily joined the eu and sovereignty was never lost.

^This.

So many English people are brainwashed into thinking the UK is something special in comparison to other EU countries. We're not. So many other EU countries have much better social systems than us, better economic growth better quality of life and much better health care. We are walking into mayhem, and I am curious to see how those smug people who think they are better than the rest and who are sucking up the nationalist myth will handle not being able to shop for family food, no being able to have their hair and nails done, not being able to get sloshed, not being able to take care of their pets as prices will be prohibitive. I won't be missing self tan.

I'd love to see a longitudinal study on the state of Britsih people's teeth, starting now and ending 20 years after Brexit. Should be interesting. We already are among the worst when it comes to clean, healthy teeth as most prioritise getting their nails done over visiting the dentist but add abject poverty once we brexit and it should get quite a bit worse.

M4Dad · 11/10/2017 11:01

So many other EU countries have much better social systems than us, better economic growth better quality of life and much better health care

Name them

BabyWilliam · 11/10/2017 11:02

M4Dad how hectoring. Go and google.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 11/10/2017 11:05

www.migrationwatchuk.org/briefing-paper/235
'MigrationWatch UK is an immigration and asylum research organisation and think-tank, which describes itself as independent and non-political, but which has been characterised by some commentators and academics as a right-wing pressure group'

Evidence bias much?

Whilst HMRC is?

One minute we are told "if you don't like it, then leave!"
Then we are told "If you leave you should not be allowed to come back!"
Jeeez, Brexiteers. You trying to permanently get rid of anyone who doesn't agree with you? Hmm

M4Dad · 11/10/2017 11:09

Whilst HMRC is?

Explain to me what the HMRC link is actually trying to say?

M4Dad · 11/10/2017 11:09

If you choose to make a statement then you should be able to back that statement up when questioned on it.
