Is Anybody Making Personal Plans For Brexit?

Very worried about it.

I have some savings, not loads, just a few thousand. I'm thinking maybe I should convert it into foreign currency. What do others think? I have a holiday aboard planned next year, I've converted all the spending money we'll need already and plan to pay for meals etc while we're there in cash.

I've been saving as much money as I can, our mortgage still has another eight years to run. I really need a new car and we had planned to get a new kitchen as ours is falling apart but don't think I can risk spending money on stuff like that now. At the same time I want to take my children abroad as much as we can now as I don't think we'll be able to afford to post 2019.

I wish we could leave the country for the EU but it's just not easy for us, no access to foreign passports, children settled in really good schools, and not easily transferable jobs.

For context, I'll almost certainly be losing my job because of Brexit in 2019, not sure what will happen with my husbands job, don't think he'll lose it but it will be negatively affected.

Is anybody else making plans to try to mitigate Brexit? If so any more suggestions for us?

Whatwouldrondo - brilliant post
Agree and agree with Rondo's point that he has nothing to do with Brexit. In fact brexit has made the imbalance in education funding worse as a number of initiatives to solve this were scrapped put on hold the day after the Referendum result.

I find everybody’s lack of faith disturbing.

I think that you are all rather missing the point.
People are voting for change

At the end of WW2 the next GE saw a massive shift for something else.

I think this is another shift for something "else".

BMW6 · 28/10/2017 01:16

By which I mean change for change' sake.

NameChanger22 · 28/10/2017 11:03

It equates to a shift for something worse.

HipToBeSquare · 29/10/2017 21:14

I would think after living through WW2 that people would want a change BMW Hmmabsolutely not comparable.

People like you are bored with the status quo and want a change. That's fine (OK it's not) but you really can't compare now with then.

Figmentofmyimagination · 30/10/2017 08:33

bmw but the 'spirit of 45' was a myth. Have a look at this interesting commentary on loach's 2013 film of the same name:

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/mar/08/ken-loach-the-spirit-of-45-fantasy

And the main driving force behind beveridge and the rest of the radical agenda of that era was a genuine fear of the spread of communism. There is no equivalent force today, (unless radical social reforms end up being made to mane up for our decision not to leave the EU after all - but that's probably my own fantasy - it's probably too late for that!)

I've been stocking up for months adding extra quinoa, manchego, chorizo crumb, red lentil pasta etc to my Ocado delivery. But I'm hoping I'll be able to just throw it all out now that Nick Clegg and Ken Clarke have met with Barnier. One can only hope and pray that good sense will prevail.

NameChanger22 · 01/11/2017 12:10

What is the shelf life of manchego? I don't fancy your chances.

MelodyvonPeterswald · 01/11/2017 12:14

I've never looked. We don't actually touch it. Although we are getting through a lot of the ŕed lentil fusili since I caught coeliac and need everything to be strictly gluten free.

NameChanger22 · 01/11/2017 12:18

Why are you stocking up on manchego if you don't touch it? Rule 1 of prepping (and normal life) is to buy what you use.

MelodyvonPeterswald · 01/11/2017 12:22

It looks nice next to the jar of organic quince jelly.

HipToBeSquare · 01/11/2017 13:41

You caught coeliac 😂

MelodyvonPeterswald · 01/11/2017 16:19

Well my friend told me she had it. Then I got it too. My nutritionist tells me this the normal pattern with gluten intolerance.

NameChanger22 · 01/11/2017 17:34

I like your style Melody.

MelodyvonPeterswald · 01/11/2017 17:40

Thank you. I like my style too.

I am actually pretty sure there's going to be nothing to worry about now that Clegg and Clarke are on the case and negotiating how to scupper any chance of Brexit directly with Bernier.

At the moment, we're undecided whether to stay in the Uk or move back to my dw's native Germany. If we do move, the fall in the value of the Pound means we've already lost a shedload of money on the Pound/Euro exchange rate and I can only see the rate deteriorating, so we're changing all our pension investments from Pound-denominated to Euro-denominated assets.

I feel awful about following John Redwood's advice, but ...

I feel awful about following John Redwood's advice, but ...
But I take it you didn't vote Leave? It's OK for Remainers to talk the country down, or take action against it, because apparently that's what we have been doing since June 2016. Grin.

Hasenstein · 15/11/2017 11:42

Peregrina

I feel a whole lot better now you've said that Smile. I feel as though the whole country is going to hell in a (self-driven) handcart, so it's difficult not to "talk it down", whatever that means. How is anything I say going to affect the country one way or the other? I don't really care what Brexiteers say about what I regard as us rational Remainers. In the final analysis, I have to do whatever protects my family best.

The only reason I feel slightly dirty is even having mentioned that awful man's name!
