The last week has seemingly been eventful but not in the way that's on the surface.

It's what's going on behind the scenes and the little comments in less high profile speeches that's more telling.

On the one hand the Norths think the May speech is a laying down "an offer" that the EU can not accept, in order to set up a no deal situation.

On the other hand Telegraph Journalist Peter Foster thinks there things going on in Brussels with the EU set to compromise in someway and help May present a deal acceptable to the British. You have to wonder whether the "presentational" stuff is about a deal to essentially be in the EU but not in the EU. A Brexit Existing in A Name Only. Beano.

It's difficult to tell, and it will come down to brinkmanship over timing. For both a deal and for the Repel Bill as the two sides in parliament try to push things to their limit for their own ends.

In this vacuum of uncertainty CBI and their "arch enemies" the TUC have put out a joint statement saying no deal is nuts and will screw every one and the way EU cits have been treated has been dreadful.

As it stands it does look like May is serious about a deal and Davis is also acting in this way. Johnson and Hannan have launched their Institute for Free Trade (at the foreign office breaking ministerial code, but hell there's no consequences these days anyway cos May dare not let Johnson off the Brexit hook) in retaliation to try and retell the Brexit story as always being about free trade rather than racist. Unfortunately leavers seem to have bust that by admitting they are considerably more racist than Remainers by their own admission.

Then there's Trump and Bombardier. Just as Brexiteers are pushing for this closer relationship with the US in trade, despite May personally lobbying Trump he fucks her over slapping 220% tariff on Bombardier and putting the future of 4000 jobs at risk. This was inevitable as Trump fucks everyone for his own gain. The US won't ride to the aid of the British capitalists. They'll just eat them alive.

This week sees an important vote by the European Parliament on Brexit red lines. One of the votes states that the UK has to either stay in the customs union and internal market or NI has to have a special arrangement and stay in the customs union and the internal market in order to protect the EUs border integrity. Neither is compatible with what the Cons and the DUP have said they want.

It's also the Tory Party conference.May's big speech, in which she must throw red meat to the swivel eyed loons on right, is on Weds. There are of course, no debates at ConParty because, well, they can't behave like good little children without supervision. Instead the conference is to, erm... yeah we'll find out next week.

Would Johnson do more?
Days or damage?
Neither is good.

Cherrypi · 06/10/2017 09:07

I would if I was her. It's a thankless job. It must be tempting to go sod you then.

Michael Gove says he's "not aware" of anything other than "universal desire" of Cabinet for May to continue as leader Grin

This geezer's so Machiavellian, I have sneaky admiration for him.
We need a Remain Govey to spearhead, our side. Trouble with the remain side, it's either too nice, or shrill. We need to get down, dirty and tabloid like Chappers was, before he was forcibly silenced.

We are winning though. It's just a messy win, when there's no rules of the game.

They have no negotiations, no one to negotiate, nothing to negotiate for.

Compare it to what it looked like a year ago, with 20 point tory lead, ukip still in control and hard brexit and tory gov for next 15 years predicted.
Fascists were circling in France, Holland and Germany, they've not disappeared but they've been more than mitigated.

There are reasons to be cheerful, or at least not to give up. Smile

Badders08 · 06/10/2017 09:14

What a clusterfuck

woman11017 · 06/10/2017 09:23

We are just lucky that we've lived in such relatively peaceful and bread full times up till now.

It is what it is.

Thatcher's political assassination wasn't pretty. Tories are brutal and the tory Brutuses don't normally get long term political power.

missmoon · 06/10/2017 09:39

Thanks woman, I needed that (a bit of optimism) this morning!

frumpety · 06/10/2017 09:50

Lewis

when will the population wake up and say no more

I don't think people are fully aware yet of the implications , supermarkets are keeping prices low enough for the time being for it not to impact too much , how long they will be able to maintain this for remains to be seen .
Also I do think the population is in a bizarre race to the bottom as far as wages Etc. are concerned . Every time there is anything on the news about the pay cap for public sector workers , you will have people who are self employed or work in the private sector talking about how they haven't had a pay rise for years , can't afford a gold plated pension . It always reminds me a of sketch , Monty Python I think ?
Divide and conquer also springs to mind .

The Tory Party Conference that keeps giving:

www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/tory-minister-says-brits-selfish-11297206
Tory minister says Brits are too "selfish" to look after elderly parents and suggests banning mobile phones
He also suggested banning mobile phones to combat society's growing obsession with social media

He has since complained that he has been misrepresented on twitter when making these comments...

Simply staggering - productivity (output per hour) in Q2 just 0.9% higher than a decade ago, the worst result for 200 years:

Points to the political party to go full on to pitch "happiness" as a way to increase productivity.

Slightly off topic, I was wondering, how reliable do you think RTB's BuzzFeed piece on Breitbard is?
A few weeks ago a uk secondary school headteacher has sent an email out to parents announcing among other things ' 'Regular seminars for students in the ‘Unsafe Space’ which we describe as ‘a vehicle for freedom of speech and the antidote to political correctness’. In seminars students will be challenged to ‘think oppositely’ and to consider ‘manifestos to change the world’. '
I'm minded to accuse him of naivety in promoting this brand of 'freedom of speech' and send him that BuzzFeed link, but it's hard to judge how real it is. I suppose it's a v new story still.
Thank you for the threads!

Fawful · 06/10/2017 10:47

On reflection I think I should perhaps open a new thread for this question, 'tis a bit of a hijack here. This school email has been rattling me. Apologies.

frumpety · 06/10/2017 10:49

RTB why was productivity so high in the 70's ? People keeping going on about Corbyn dragging us back to this era , and how dreadful it was .

LurkingHusband · 06/10/2017 10:56

Nadine Dorries

Is this the same Nadine Dorries that tweeted she might have to go and get her shotgun after seeing her daughter talking to Reginald D. Hunter

twitter.com/nadinedorries/status/200716390305505281?lang=en

Or a different Nadine Dorries ?

RedToothBrush · 06/10/2017 10:59

fawful I'd be concerned.

RTB why was productivity so high in the 70's

Because if productivity is output over time, as you reduce the denominator, the result gets bigger ?

Most days lost in strikes in the EEC ? "The sick man of Europe" ?

This is why I have no sympathy for May. Apologies for banging on about this and it's not a thread about having or not having sympathy for our PM and I appreciate people have different levels of empathy but as a direct result of May and her colleagues vulnerable families live in unacceptable conditions. Whilst May can go back to her lush and plush home(s) and commiserate over fancy food and drink.

It makes me so angry.

Just in case the Nadine Dorries comment "As I looked over my shoulder, Reginald D Hunter was talking to my daughter.#wheresmyshotgunman" isn't clear, he looks like this.

She represents the very worst of them.

A poem for Boris Johnson "Once You Clear The Bodies"

twitter.com/lukewrightpoet/status/915565388284547072

Once You Clear The Bodies

“There’s a group of UK business people, wonderful guys … And they literally have a brilliant vision to turn Sirte … into the next Dubai. The only thing they’ve got to do is clear the dead bodies away and then they’ll be there.” – Boris Johnson, British Foreign Secretary, September 2017

Come now, native, wipe that tear
all’s not lost, this time next year
we’ll build a shopping centre here
well, once you clear the bodies.

Bring on the low-tax Costa Blanco
BoJo’s on it! Chin-up, sambo!
What you want’s a brand new Nando’s
once you clear the bodies.

That’s it! Swap that spear for lucre!
Get some air con. Splendid. Super.
Apple. Gucci. Rayban. Uber.
Once you clear the bodies.

I feel for you, hey, I’ve read Brooke.
War’s a horrid thing, now look,
it’s British Airways! Thomas Cook!
Once you clear the bodies.

So grab a broom! Yes, quickly please
We’ll bring ol’ Blighty’s expertise.
No, me no speako Bongo-ese.
Just clear the bloody bodies.

The friendly guns have done their bit.
Shock doctrine strikes! Now dig that pit!
We’ll build a massive mall right here, and you can work in it.
Once you clear the bodies.

Since we are putting the truth about Nadine Dorries (other Tory MPs are available) it's only fair to point out that when Reginald D. Hunter mentions that incident, he points out that it was Nadine Dorries that bought her daughter over, introduced her, and then fucked off just to be able to make the tweet. There's no suggestion it was spontaneous. It was a "planned" amusing tweet. And in that sentence the word "planned" is doing all the work ....

LurkingHusband · 06/10/2017 12:09

Whose Latin is up for translating that excellent poem ?

Productivity
The UK has suffered for many decades from lower productivity than its main rivals
The long hours culture in the UK - compared to the Western EU at least - is to try to compensate for this inefficiency

It only makes sense to measure productivity per hour -That is how businesses calculate it - when deciding whether to build / move facilities

I remember a Tory politician lamenting that UK workers in industry take 5 days to produce what Germans do in 4 days and not knowing why
Well, it's mostly inefficient management and failure to invest in new equipment, in training workers, in paying to retain the experienced ones.
In the UK, employers want young & cheap, exhaust them, bin them, move onto the next
In Germany, workers get a one-off bonus or annually extra days holiday after 25 years service and after 40 years - I've attended the celebrations at work.
Except for those on commission, workers don't do more than their contracted hours. Overtime is limited and laid.

I am surprised though that efficiency is much worse than a few years ago - demotivated, stressed workers, employers putting off investment in new equipment even longer than usual ?
