Westminstenders: Beano or Bust

The last week has seemingly been eventful but not in the way that's on the surface.

It's what's going on behind the scenes and the little comments in less high profile speeches that's more telling.

On the one hand the Norths think the May speech is a laying down "an offer" that the EU can not accept, in order to set up a no deal situation.

On the other hand Telegraph Journalist Peter Foster thinks there things going on in Brussels with the EU set to compromise in someway and help May present a deal acceptable to the British. You have to wonder whether the "presentational" stuff is about a deal to essentially be in the EU but not in the EU. A Brexit Existing in A Name Only. Beano.

It's difficult to tell, and it will come down to brinkmanship over timing. For both a deal and for the Repel Bill as the two sides in parliament try to push things to their limit for their own ends.

In this vacuum of uncertainty CBI and their "arch enemies" the TUC have put out a joint statement saying no deal is nuts and will screw every one and the way EU cits have been treated has been dreadful.

As it stands it does look like May is serious about a deal and Davis is also acting in this way. Johnson and Hannan have launched their Institute for Free Trade (at the foreign office breaking ministerial code, but hell there's no consequences these days anyway cos May dare not let Johnson off the Brexit hook) in retaliation to try and retell the Brexit story as always being about free trade rather than racist. Unfortunately leavers seem to have bust that by admitting they are considerably more racist than Remainers by their own admission.

Then there's Trump and Bombardier. Just as Brexiteers are pushing for this closer relationship with the US in trade, despite May personally lobbying Trump he fucks her over slapping 220% tariff on Bombardier and putting the future of 4000 jobs at risk. This was inevitable as Trump fucks everyone for his own gain. The US won't ride to the aid of the British capitalists. They'll just eat them alive.

This week sees an important vote by the European Parliament on Brexit red lines. One of the votes states that the UK has to either stay in the customs union and internal market or NI has to have a special arrangement and stay in the customs union and the internal market in order to protect the EUs border integrity. Neither is compatible with what the Cons and the DUP have said they want.

It's also the Tory Party conference.May's big speech, in which she must throw red meat to the swivel eyed loons on right, is on Weds. There are of course, no debates at ConParty because, well, they can't behave like good little children without supervision. Instead the conference is to, erm... yeah we'll find out next week.

So why aren't these noisy Leave supporters stepping up with Sponsorship? E.g. Dyson?

HesterThrale · 05/10/2017 22:39

Yes Peregrina exactly. Tim of Wetherspoons... etc.

A suggestion that May could have deliberately used her right hand to
cough into, to show off a bracelet with images of a famous communist... well it's no more bizarre or baffling than anything else that's happened in the last 15 months.

IdontlooklikeEmmaWatson · 05/10/2017 22:39

"We should not take pleasure in other people's misfortune,"
I don't think here was any misfortune as such, she had a sore throat and a prop was wonky, it's just the symbolism of it all that made the speech funny and fascinating, what happened was really rather innocent. At least the P45 was a prank as opposed to the many people who really were given notice to leave their work, homes and loved ones on May's say so. I see no drama in yesterday's speech just incompetence and a very hostile party culture. Also i do think she handled it very well indeed must be getting the very best public speaking coaching. I say it again she is not a vulnerable woman but a powerful (isn) politician.

TheElementsSong · 05/10/2017 22:43

So why aren't these noisy Leave supporters stepping up with Sponsorship? E.g. Dyson?

Because all their resources are too occupied with really important stuff like developing raspberry-picking robots, the Scottish space programme and the protected-BeLeaver-positive-thinking biosphere for Brexit Tinkerbells?

IdontlooklikeEmmaWatson · 05/10/2017 22:43

btw I adore the Frida Khalo bracelet and am very confused as to why May wore it unless maybe for a laugh.

If an announcement was made that Brexit will be cancelled as not in the best interests of the UK, I suspect there would be a large uplift in business confidence and a mini boom.

Peregrina · 05/10/2017 23:07

It looks to me that her health isn't as good as it needs to be for somebody in such a challenging job.

But her health problems started before she became PM. She should have asked herself whether her health was up to the job before she rushed to take it on. There must be loads of us who can't do jobs that we would like to do because a health condition rules us out.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/10/2017 23:07

Last year, according to figures published in August by the Electoral Commission:

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/oct/05/conservative-donors-call-for-may-to-stand-down-over-bullying-by-johnson

  • the Tories generated £1.5m in membership fees
  • Labour £14.4m

Is the Tory membership fee ridiculously low
- or is the Tory membership ridiculously low ?

(maybe why they refuse to give up to date membership numbers ?)

mathanxiety · 05/10/2017 23:08

BCF, do you know if the Goldman inquiries reflect a plan to increase the exodus from London that was already in the works?

BigChocFrenzy · 05/10/2017 23:08

< hunts further in case the Guardian had a typo >

BigChocFrenzy · 05/10/2017 23:15

math I don't know for sure, but the rumours from Frankfurt are that both GS and Deutsche Bank are moving personnel earlier than expected
Concrete news is that there is a bit of a rush to rent office space and high-grade residential property

Newspapers say property in the region is booming already, but that may also be because the German economy is growing well.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/10/2017 23:17

Both the GS and DB plans were sparked off by Brexit
Even though the head of DB at least wanted to move personnel back before the EU-ref, he couldn't make the financial case before

BigChocFrenzy · 05/10/2017 23:23

The future for UK workers after the Bonfire of Red Tape ?
Maybe adopt the Japanese word "karoshi" (death from overwork)

The latest karoshi victim; a Japanese woman who died from a heart attack - aged 31 - after logging 159 hours of overtime in a month

www.theguardian.com/world/2017/oct/05/japanese-woman-dies-overwork-159-hours-overtime

Holliewantstobehot · 05/10/2017 23:28

The trouble is once they've moved they're not coming back. Even if a miracle happens and Brexit is cancelled (unlikely I know) they're not going to spend more money moving back. Brexit needs stopping now before the point of no return.

OlennasWimple · 05/10/2017 23:28

I love being proved right usually. I would be over the moon if my personal "Project Fears" concerns were to be proved to be utterly baseless

BigChocFrenzy · 05/10/2017 23:47

Our fears are of what would happen if the UK leaves the Single Market and Brexits on WTO terms - or on no terms at all

Unless there is a looong transition period, our - and more worryingly R North's fears - will probably happen

If the UK stays, in some fudged form, in the SM, then the effects won't be noticeable to most folk.

RedToothBrush · 05/10/2017 23:52

The Sun are carrying the story that there are not enough signatories yet. But the Metro is saying that May could walk as early as tomorrow.

A lot of speculation today that May will resign.

Not convinced completely yet, but sneaking suspicion she will be gone by end of next week. But this is the Zombie PM...

In the meantime, Brexit talks look set to go into reverse.

Brexit deadlock looms as European negotiators say they have lost faith in May

And heres a story from Buzzfeed about America and the American Nazis.

R North is still on the same page as me... Its worse than bad.

OP posts:
Peregrina · 06/10/2017 00:07

It was all going to be so easy - European citizens who had made their homes in this country were assured that their position was secure, no one (according to Daniel Hannon) was talking about leaving the single market, people would be rushing to do trade deals with us, especially the 'Anglosphere' and if the worst came to it, we would just deal on WTO terms.

One by one, all these have been exposed as either lies or at best wishful thinking.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 06/10/2017 06:01

I think she'll go. I've been analysing her speech (as well as her other speeches and she should sack her speech writer as they are truly terrible for her) and her last one was actually better but unbelievable.
I don't see how she can survive this but then I've said this before. But if she leaves then who and we are in the position of another unelected leader. I know this isn't technically correct, it's the party that is elected and it is what is felt.

Thank you for more eloquently expressing my feelings of sympathy for TM bigly.
I feel oncw i lose that ability i become nore like her and her ilk
So very very depressed about the future for my kids and Dh just will not accept how bad it's going to be

Theworldisfullofidiots · 06/10/2017 07:13

I feel sorry for her as well. I think she finds feelings overwhelming so doesn't know what to do with them. So she suppresses them and loses a big source of knowledge and insight.
But....we need a good leader (and preferably one that is emotionally literate).
