May's Speech Abbreviated:

We still have nfi how we are going to do this. EU this is your fault. You sort it out. We are too lazy, workshy and fighting like high school children to work it out ourselves. Be our whipping boy.

I support democracy as long as I get to do whatever I like
I support human rights as long as I can ignore them when I like.
I support the rule of law except when it doesn't suit my agenda.

Waffle waffle.

"Creative", "Dynamic" PR for my Premiership.

Waffle waffle

We really need policing cooperation, PLEASE keep it with us. I know I threatened to withdraw this, but I'm sorry, I was wrong and a bit of a dick about this.

Gets to the point FINALLY.

"2 year transition period"

(With another time bomb lock which is still too short for IT departments. Nothing to do with the next general election, honest).

RULE BRITANNIA!

Polite Applause.

Transition to cover the life of a tory gov. Labour takes office while economy goes into tailspin.

Whatever else you say about the Tories one thing is certain, they are expert at ensuring their shit lands on someone else. Hmm

RedToothBrush · 22/09/2017 15:41

Nig, is not happy.

He's on the BBC.

I can't be effing arsed to give oxygen to the comments of a man who gets upset when he isn't getting attention.

IdontlooklikeEmmaWatson · 22/09/2017 15:44

thank you for a new thread.

woman11017 · 22/09/2017 15:45

good replies here:

@dw_europe
Prime Minister @theresa_may says at Florence speech: We never felt at home in the European Union #Brexit

And the EU could just say 'No' to May's one thing about wanting a transition.
Exactly.

He's on the BBC.
On Rosh Hashanah. Angry Shana Tova, everyone: Happy New year!

IdontlooklikeEmmaWatson · 22/09/2017 15:47

""2 year transition period"

(With another time bomb lock which is still too short for IT departments. Nothing to do with the next general election, honest). "

2 years will turn into 3, 5 10.....

IdontlooklikeEmmaWatson · 22/09/2017 15:47

and then maybe another referendum?

LurkingHusband · 22/09/2017 15:49

Nig, is not happy.

Today just got a little better ....

Somerville · 22/09/2017 15:51

I missed the second half, but doubtless didn't actually miss anything?

Woman baby is doing good, thanks.

Whoever said in last thread that UK will end up like Ireland-before-EU-investment, with young people leaving in droves - that's my feeling too. Both ideologically: my DC's peers are admiring of those with EU passports, where my parents' peers are suspicious of the same. And economically: those appalling student loan interest rates that cant be pursued once out of the country.

artisancraftbeer · 22/09/2017 15:54

Thanks Red... it will be interesting to see if the government manages to survive as long as the transition...

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 22/09/2017 15:58

Im trying to feel sorry for nigel....

Nope cant do it

HashiAsLarry · 22/09/2017 16:03

Well anything that upsets Nige has got to be a good thing.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 22/09/2017 16:06

Well he just referred to leave voters as the great unwashed...

I understand the quote...but nige! Honestly

TheElementsSong · 22/09/2017 16:14

That speech was a whole lot of nothing, really.

Apart from a bit of "It's all your fault!" and "You fix it!"

One might imagine Leavers wouldn't be happy with it, but then again they've been utterly delighted with everything that has, or hasn't, happened since June 2016. So maybe they're all delighted with this too.

Peregrina · 22/09/2017 16:16

Been out all day. I don't know if I can psych myself up to read what the silly woman has said. The only thing which was probably true was that certain people never felt part of the EEC/EU - this was always why de Gaulle's said Non. The UK could have been part of the EEC right from the off.

RedToothBrush · 22/09/2017 16:17

IdontlooklikeEmmaWatson, at this rate given how ridiculous Brexit is, I would not bet against the eventual outcome was that we were negotiating to join the Euro and Schengen as well as staying in the EU.

OP posts:
TheNumberfaker · 22/09/2017 16:18

But even if 2 years transition turns into 3 or 5 or 10, we would still be out of the EU, having lost rebate and Euro/Schengen opt outs?

TheElementsSong · 22/09/2017 16:22

Oh, and thanks for the new thread RTB!

Sandycarrots · 22/09/2017 16:34

Good to see a thread about it at least (thank you Red) was starting to worry that no-one was bothered.

I agree the speech was a whole lot of nothing - devoid of realpolitik.

Also agree with the Beeb journalist/correspondent bod who said the trouble with asking the EU to join with us in finding "creative solutions" is that this mess is entirely of our own creation and so it is up to us find a way through the mire.

Why should the other MS bend over backwards to come up with a boutique solution just for us? They are obviously not going to support deals that are more favourable than the agreements they currently have.

woman11017 · 22/09/2017 16:38

Barnier's response. In better English than May could manage.

europa.eu/rapid/press-release_STATEMENT-17-3427_en.htm

prettybird · 22/09/2017 16:41

Barnier saying that May's speech showed a constructive spirit and a genuine effort to move things forward.

It's as if he were a Uni lecturer marking her essay. Good effort but could do better. 5/10. Wink

Peregrina · 22/09/2017 16:44

this will be a defining moment in the history of our nation.

Yes, I have to agree with that, in the same way that Hitler's rise to power was a defining moment in German history.

The government I lead is committed not only to protecting high standards, but strengthening them. Grenfell happened on this woman's watch. So much for protecting high standards and strengthening them.

I skim read the rest after that. So much vacuous noise.

pointythings · 22/09/2017 16:46

I am glad I was at work bashing data around instead of watching the speech. I don't need more hot air in my life. .

Thanks for the new thread, RTB.

Violetparis · 22/09/2017 16:46

Sandycarrots agree with you. It's frankly embarrassing that Theresa May is asking to EU to come up with 'creative solutions'. The Tory party called this referendum, triggered article 50 and called a general election and I am incredulous (though also used to it by now) that they still have no bloody plan or ideas on how to resolve the mess they have created.

CardinalSin · 22/09/2017 16:47

Barnier saying "Put your money where your mouth is".
