Westminstenders: The Maddest of May and Boris's Dare

RedToothBrush · 16/09/2017 22:43

Boris Johnson just dared May to fire him.

That's what his little rant about £350 million buses is.

Meanwhile its been pointed out that HMRC literally are incapable of handling a no deal and can only cope with an EEA / EFTA deal with no tariffs.

And given how good and on time the government are with computer systems even in a best case scenario are extremely unlikely to crack it in time.

Which makes Hammond's talk of a civil contingence plan, look, well half arsed and lacking.

We also wouldn't have planes able to fly to Europe under a no deal as we would no longer be part of Open Skies. This could leave thousands stranded. But no biggie there.

Meanwhile if the Leave Alliance have things right, May is about to serve our one year notice on leaving the EEA making all these things a reality.

Which is less like shooting yourself in the head and more like shooting yourself in the head, chest, foot, arm, leg and face (for a second time), whilst being run over at the same time.

But hey, Boris Johnson has it sussed in his 10 point plan. Especially the point where he says Brexit will be a success.

If you call success ending democracy, becoming a dictatorship, starving everyone, bankrupting the country and causing civil unrest.

Rule Britannia.

There's really no reasoning with some folk is there?

I have non heritage (that I know of) outside of Britain. I have two young children, aging parents and other relatives, and my husband is very close with his family. He is at the beginning of his career, and has the potential to make a good living here. Plus, he loves the UK. I am self employed and if we relocated I'd have to start from scratch again. We have no savings. I've always thought I've been luckily to be a Brit in Britain, but now I'm not so sure. I desperately wish I'd had the foresight to study a language beyond GCSE and developed a skill that would enable me to relocate.

Tell me Trout, what should I do? What are my options?

Because as far as I can tell, there are 3:

  1. Do nothing. Put faith in our idiotic government and wait to find out how clever they are.
  2. Convince my very patriotic Leave voting husband to look for a job in a country I think we could make a living in, and say goodbye to our lives here.
  3. Learn about Brexit, its implications for everyone and protest anything that will not be beneficial.

Number 3 should assure you of the stake I hold in this country. That I care about it, that I won't tolerate bad decisions, and that I want a future here. For some reason that makes me a Remoaner.

PerfectlyPooPoo · 17/09/2017 16:15

And where should Badders go when in 12 months time she probably won't have the legal right to live anywhere other than the UK?

I know you think you're being clever and asking questions but your lack of truly understanding the situation is a bit pathetic.

The question was aimed at Eternal, I am curious as to why someone who shares that they are French is so bothered about Bexit.

LurkingHusband · 17/09/2017 16:18

Well, Texas is a state within the United States (a sovereign country). Texas does not have its own citizenship which would be recognised by other countries. How do I know that? Well, because when Hitler declared war on December 11th, 1941 - he declared war on the United States of America (not on each of the then 48 constituent states).

Hmmm, here's a way to shake up the Brexit narrative. I wonder if we should start characterising it as the UK "seceding from the Union" ? Which is not really too far from the truth.

The rebel states wanted to secede so they could carry on abusing humans as slaves. Which isn't a million miles from what Brexit is going to do.

Of course if we do pursue that historical parallel ....

EternalOptimistToo · 17/09/2017 16:22

Kilgore let me think....
Because DH is British, my dcs do not know any other country other than the uk.
Because I WAS settled here, have a business etc...

TBH so little compassion for the people who are living in the country and have helped making what it is (seeing that Ive spend more or less all my working life here) is making me want to swear. I think I have as much investment than you in this country (esp as you have been very keen to tell us that you are from immigrants descent too - I imagine you mean your parents were immigrants, just like my own dcs).
So please keep your insults and your 'go back home, we don't want to see you here' for yourself and think about the BRITISH children that have and will be ever so badly affected by people like you. People who are actually exactely like YOU, a child for immigrant (or so you say - you dint seem to have once once of sympathy or understanding for people who should actually be 'just like you')

EternalOptimistToo · 17/09/2017 16:24

The fact you are even asking such a question shows your stupidity, I'm sorry to say.

Because thinking that Europeans living here should not be bothered by Brexit, despite knowing so many of them have been here for years and years, is just showing that. Plain stupidity of the first order.
A very quick survey of this thread, any previous thread, people living around you, your own family?? Would have answered that question.

Plonkysaurus · 17/09/2017 16:28

Kilgore let's imagine you're from Mars. You move to Venus because the quality of life is good there. You start to make a life there, maybe have a family, put your kids in the local school, pay taxes in Venus and take part in the culture there.

Then some Venutians get a bee in their space bonnets because the galaxy has moved on and people are living all over the place. The Venutians government has also been a bit lax on people's rights, but whatevs. Those who are up in arms over all the Martians and some from other planets start listening to people who give voice to their shared doubts, and they vote to break ties with the Martians, Plutonians, Uranians and others.
But hold on! You have a mortgage, a family, a job - a whole life on Venus. You can't just pick it up and transplant it back to Mars, and you don't really want to either. But some people are telling you you should.

And then you go on Venusnet and some absolute twonk asks you why on earth you dare to have an opinion on your own life.

PerfectlyPooPoo · 17/09/2017 16:30

Plonky 😂

Badders08 · 17/09/2017 16:31

What's going to happen when the EU migrants who are keeping the nhs afloat leave?
We will need trained migrants from non EU countries such as Africa and Asia.
That's going to go down like a cup of cold sick for the vast majority of leavers imo

KilgoreTroutV · 17/09/2017 16:33

Today 14:03 EternalOptimistToo

I have to say sometimes, these comments make my blood boil

Well that doesn't sound very optimistic now does it.

Esp when they are coming with We need to control immigration but that's not why I voted to leave the EU

What's difficult to understand about that? We need immigration. We need a sensible and sustainable number. They should be allowed to come from all over the world not just 27 countries on our doorstep. But numbers must be controlled, realistic and sustainable. In 2004, Blair estimated 13,000 EU migrants - we actually had over a million. Simple maths.

EU migration and FOM was not my primary reason for leaving the EU, I supported Leave because of the way the EU is designed, set up and run (with a lack of adequate democratic accountability).

Plonkysaurus · 17/09/2017 16:34

Sometimes you gotta put these things in simple terms perfectly Grin

QuentinSummers · 17/09/2017 16:39

So. What's the best autumn jam recipe? I've seen loads of crabapples round me but I am not sure what to do with them.
Also we have about 5 billion marrows. Marrow tips very welcome

LurkingHusband were you, by any chance, in charge of Project Fear? I don't remember the claim that Brexit would lead to the decriminalisation of slavery. That would have been a definite vote winner.

KilgoreTroutV · 17/09/2017 16:45

Plonkysaurus
a whole life on Venus. You can't just pick it up and transplant it back to Mars, and you don't really want to either

Badders08 said I desperately want to leave

Plonkysaurus · 17/09/2017 16:47

As do I. But for many of us it's not possible.

And I want referring to what Badders said anyway; I was alluding to your interrogation of The Eternal Optimist.

Cant believe I've had to point that out.

Badders08 · 17/09/2017 16:52

Yes I do.
But I have pointed out - repeatedly - why I can't
Leavers do seem to see things as black and white dont they??
As a taxpayer I wonder how much you would be willing to pay to care for my elderly mother?
Hmmmm
You see I'm going to guess "not fucking much" so I will stick around and continue to provide her care.
I will continue to do my two community voluntary roles.
Until it becomes either unsafe or unlawful to do so.
Then I guess dh and I will have to reassess.

Plonkysaurus · 17/09/2017 16:55

Also would now be the time to point out that many people who want to leave haven't just woken up feeling positive and optimistic about going elsewhere? We feel out of step with the tone of the place we're living in, and it's a steady thing that doesn't get decided on a whim.

Badders08 · 17/09/2017 16:56

....in a completely unrelated matter...
How much is a fatal amount of cake and crumble do you think?...
😣🤢

Crabapples make a lovely jelly. And a friend combined some of his with some of the surplus plums from my tree to make a crabapple and plum jelly. Should go beautifully with some venison Smile

Can you make a marrow chutney? Very "domestic goddess" Wink; good for Christmas presents in straightened times Grin

pointythings · 17/09/2017 17:00

^Coo. Is that cos you Remainers is like well clever, ejucatid and sfistikatid.
Coo.^

This is exactly the sort of crap our previous bridge dweller came out with when they ran out of arguments. Coincidence???

Anyone for some good vegetarian curry recipes?

Plonkysaurus · 17/09/2017 17:01

As long as we can include paneer pointy

Badders08 · 17/09/2017 17:03

Who that GF under our bridge?
😂
No longer feeding it or myself 🤢

Badders08 · 17/09/2017 17:03

Oooh yes veggie curry recipes would be great!
