Westminstenders: The Maddest of May and Boris's Dare

RedToothBrush · 16/09/2017 22:43

Boris Johnson just dared May to fire him.

That's what his little rant about £350 million buses is.

Meanwhile its been pointed out that HMRC literally are incapable of handling a no deal and can only cope with an EEA / EFTA deal with no tariffs.

And given how good and on time the government are with computer systems even in a best case scenario are extremely unlikely to crack it in time.

Which makes Hammond's talk of a civil contingence plan, look, well half arsed and lacking.

We also wouldn't have planes able to fly to Europe under a no deal as we would no longer be part of Open Skies. This could leave thousands stranded. But no biggie there.

Meanwhile if the Leave Alliance have things right, May is about to serve our one year notice on leaving the EEA making all these things a reality.

Which is less like shooting yourself in the head and more like shooting yourself in the head, chest, foot, arm, leg and face (for a second time), whilst being run over at the same time.

But hey, Boris Johnson has it sussed in his 10 point plan. Especially the point where he says Brexit will be a success.

If you call success ending democracy, becoming a dictatorship, starving everyone, bankrupting the country and causing civil unrest.

Rule Britannia.

Can't we just discuss turnip jam recipes? That would be more productive than this.

What's going to happen when the EU migrants who are keeping the nhs afloat leave? I'd be in favour of skilled health workers to have some sort of path to citizenship (if they want it).

We will need trained migrants from non EU countries such as Africa and Asia
Yes, we've had to rely on skilled medics from all over the world in the past. In fact its the reason my family came here in the 1960s.

That's going to go down like a cup of cold sick for the vast majority of leavers imo
OK. You're entitled to your opinion. Why should a doctor or nurse or midwife from India, Jamaica or Australia have a much higher hurdle to get into the UK than one from Poland, Italy or Bulgaria?

LurkingHusband · 17/09/2017 17:12

Anyone else starting to feel that we're going to be subjected to a barrage "the UK done all this work on Brexit, but the indolent, sclerotic, moribund, indecisive and undemocratic EU just can't handle it" ?

This is based on a completely unscientific earwigging recently, where some Leavers seemed to genuinely believe that all Brexit needed to be done was a signature somewhere.

(Thinks of Jack Nicholsons scenery chewing You can't handle the truth )

Badders08 · 17/09/2017 17:13

They shouldn't.
But the sort of people who voted alongside you arent so keen on brown faces....

I have a nice chickpea and pumpkin curry recipe somewhere. I think I might be able to link if anyone is interested.

IdontlooklikeEmmaWatson · 17/09/2017 17:15

prettybird dd just came in with a bowl full of crab apples from the garden. Are all crab apples edible and do you have a recipe by any chance? I have never cooked with crab apples before and heard crab apple jelly is nice with chilly? Thanks Is the jelly just used for meats?
opportunist thread hijack.

Badders08 · 17/09/2017 17:16

...amd I think you know I'm not talking about legal hurdles btw...
I'm talking about racist knuckle draggers not realising that we need immigration....if not from the EU then from - shock horror!! - Muslim countries!!!!

RandomlyGenerated · 17/09/2017 17:16

Marrow and ginger jam would be a good way of using up a surplus of marrows?

Badders08 · 17/09/2017 17:16

Crab Apple jelly is lovely
Yes please to the curry recipe!

LurkingHusband · 17/09/2017 17:21

Anyone catch this

The East German secret police went to extraordinary lengths to track down people who wrote letters to the BBC during the Cold War. One of those arrested and jailed was a teenager who longed to express himself freely - and paid a high price. (contd)

I wonder if the same is being planned for people who dare talk down Brexit ?

As I have said, I am in favour of immigration. We need it. It should come from anywhere in the world and be conditional on the skills and merits of people coming in. I am not in favour of potentially unlimited immigration from 27 countries.

badders I am so envious of your cake making skill. Veg curry recipes would be great.

prettybird · 17/09/2017 17:46

Don't have a crab apple recipe myself. Would probably just google a few and then combine elements of different ones.

Think all Crabapples are edible - it's just that some of the ornamental ones have fruits that are too small to be usable.

Crabapple/rowanberry/redcurrant jellies are good on toast/warm croissants (tried the crabapple and plum jelly yesterday on a croissant) or with some cheeses - or to make a jus/gravy/sauce to go with meat (I use them at Christmas to go with roast pheasant).

HTH Smile

The way your EU pals are "negotiating" is making a hard Brexit entirely likely. They have actually said they won't negotiate anything until we completely capitulate, surrender and concede on every single one of their demands on the so-called "Divorce" settlement.

woman11017 · 17/09/2017 17:47

Lot of BJ rumours flying round the twitters, I see, as well as leavers clearly worried, again about what Chapman knows.
Okey dokey.

woman11017 · 17/09/2017 17:49

prettybird have you got a crab apple recipe? Seems like a great year for them, lots along the grand union canal. Sound good together with plum

woman11017 · 17/09/2017 17:51

Plum and Crabapple Jam

3 cups of quartered unpeeled crabapples
1 ½ cups water
1 cinnamon stick about 4 inches long
4 cups of sliced blue or purple plums
5 cups of sugar
¼ cup dry red or white wine or grape juice.

Place crabapples, water and cinnamon stick in a very large stainless steel or enamel saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat, cover, reduce heat and boil gently for 10 minutes or until fruit is soft. Remove from heat and discard cinnamon stick. Press crabapples though a sieve; discard solids.

Return crabapple pulp to saucepan. Add plums, sugar and wine. Bring to a full boil and boil rapidly, uncovered, until mixture will form a gel, about 20 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from heat.

Looks nice, will have a go. Smile

Ah, crab apple jelly. Late DF was an expert at making this. He had a large garden with a bank of crab apple trees. It stopped when they had to move to a smaller house, with a much smaller garden. MIL in her mid nineties, still makes her own jams and chutneys, and bakes regularly.

woman11017 · 17/09/2017 17:56

The interesting thing too with Legatum, is no matter how much money and let's call it 'muscle power' they have, if they haven't got a trump like populist figure head to lead the leavers, they're fucked.

They'd hoped that BJ was their candidate, it's going a bit pear shaped today. Grin

Peregrina · 17/09/2017 17:57

He basically ballsed up his political career when he ducked out of the leadership contest immediately post-referendum, and he's now so beholden to the ultras that he's basically their puppet.

Doesn't that make him a prime candidate? They wanted Leasdom for that reason because they knew that they could control her.

woman11017 · 17/09/2017 17:59

No matter what BJ is, he hasn't got the populist fairy dust that trump and corbyn seem to have.

He's not popular, as well as all the other stuff which seems to be associated with him. Hmm
