Westminstenders: The Maddest of May and Boris's Dare

RedToothBrush · 16/09/2017 22:43

Boris Johnson just dared May to fire him.

That's what his little rant about £350 million buses is.

Meanwhile its been pointed out that HMRC literally are incapable of handling a no deal and can only cope with an EEA / EFTA deal with no tariffs.

And given how good and on time the government are with computer systems even in a best case scenario are extremely unlikely to crack it in time.

Which makes Hammond's talk of a civil contingence plan, look, well half arsed and lacking.

We also wouldn't have planes able to fly to Europe under a no deal as we would no longer be part of Open Skies. This could leave thousands stranded. But no biggie there.

Meanwhile if the Leave Alliance have things right, May is about to serve our one year notice on leaving the EEA making all these things a reality.

Which is less like shooting yourself in the head and more like shooting yourself in the head, chest, foot, arm, leg and face (for a second time), whilst being run over at the same time.

But hey, Boris Johnson has it sussed in his 10 point plan. Especially the point where he says Brexit will be a success.

If you call success ending democracy, becoming a dictatorship, starving everyone, bankrupting the country and causing civil unrest.

Rule Britannia.

I don't think they could hashi because of all the "will of the people"/"democratic choice" bullshit. Everyone knows the LDs are pro Europe and they were trounced.
I think it would be different if there was another GE now. It would in interesting to see which way Labour went. Of course this is why Boris is getting away with bad behaviour and May is still in power

I have been lurking on most of these wonderful threads since the first, and would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your hard work, intelligent discussion and humour. I am a v-e-r-y slow reader and struggle to keep up never mind contribute, so I find the 'digest' of articles and tweets etc here utterly invaluable (especially as I don't do twitter myself), you are my main source of Brexit news!

As I find myself at a point of being totally up to date, I just wanted to post a top tip for a headline for Friday's speech: Florence and the Machine.
(With apologies to Florence and the Machine).

Peregrina · 20/09/2017 21:00

Labour is in a difficult position - paid up members tended to be Remain as did younger voters, but their 'traditional' more elderly vote was pro Leave. I can't quite see how they reconcile that, except by stressing the economic disaster that looks to be looming, and trading on the fact that the Tories are making a complete hash of things.

HashiAsLarry · 20/09/2017 21:01

I know Quentin. Proof in itself really just how slimy and arse covering all of them are.
Would have been interesting to see though had someone properly put their head above the parapet

< waves to LimeJelly >

Holliewantstobehot · 20/09/2017 21:42

Just signed those petitions. I voted labour because my constituency was neck and neck labour/cons and I wanted to get the tories out. I feel that was maybe why lib Dems didn't do so well.

BigChoc ? ConfusedBlush Clue as to previous nickname? < waves wildly anyway>

Open Skies - concern over flights after Brexit

< remember: it's not just about holidays or even business travelers. Air freight and air mail are important too >

http://www.travelweekly.com/Travel-News/Airline-News/Concerns-mounting-over-impact-Brexit-open-skies-accords

With Brexit just 19 months away, concerns are mounting on both sides of the Atlantic over whether a deal can be reached in time to preserve the liberal open skies policies that currently govern commercial flights between the U.S., the U.K. and the European Union.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/sep/20/us-airlines-aviation-regulations-post-brexit-open-skies-agreement-eu

US airlines have told the UK to move faster to ensure passenger and cargo flights to Heathrow, Stansted and other airports will continue without disruption after Britain leaves the EU.

The aviation trade body Airlines for America, whose members include United, American Airlines and FedEx, says the multibillion pound traffic in both directions will be put at risk unless politicians concentrate their minds on the impact Brexit will have on the industry.

Airbus concerns

< important tech centers, wellpaid jobs and the sites spawn component suppliers >

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2017/sep/03/britain-aerospace-sector-could-be-priced-out-after-brexit

A Brexit-inspired shift in wing production would not only be a huge blow to Broughton, it would be likely to trigger an exodus of suppliers.
Worryingly, GKN, an engineering group that supplies the aerospace industry, last month said it would be forced to follow Airbus if it shuffled work from Britain to other sites in Europe.

Kevin Cummings, chief executive of GKN’s aerospace business, said the FTSE 100 engineering group would have to move its emphasis to where its customers were
“We are also just as much European as we are a UK company,” Cummings added.

Good Twitter summary: Richard North explaining why
UK food exports to the EU will be stopped for years unless the UK remains in EEA

The problem is that - even with a trade deal - the UK would become a "third country"

HashiAsLarry · 20/09/2017 22:50

Apparently my tech in the house is clever. Just watching newnight and the reporter said something like tm is hoping to soften the eu with her speech but...
Then the sound bar cut switched off.

Well it's either clever or doesn't want to talk down the UK 🤣🤣🤣

Badders08 · 21/09/2017 07:03

I don't get it 🤔
North is a leaver, Yes?
So why are his blogs so pro remain!!??

Badders North isn't pro-Remain. He's anti-EU, always has been, but wants a sensible exit. He is the originator of Flexcit (see his pamphlet of that name).

This is an object lesson in examining very carefully the real nature, beliefs and abilities of your fellow-travellers. See also Jacobs' "The Monkey's Paw".

A random one from me on the subject of food which keeps cropping up, up thread.....

It's very metropolitan elite of me as it involves Waitrose. You know how they do promotions by the door so bottles of prosecco and flowers and chocolates on Valentine's Day, then Easter and Christmas stuff etc. This week there were just plain shelves of Waitrose value/essentials range all lined up quite sparsely like Eastern bloc supermarkets used to be. I have never seen them promoting this stuff this before, and such a minimalist display, it was odd.Really odd.

Is it changes in buying patterns? Or people stockpiling? It seemed a very real tangible change and sent a bit of a chill down my spine tbh. I thought of ration books all the way home. Probably paranoia as I'm busy and tired at the moment...

Peregrina · 21/09/2017 07:25

His blogs aren't pro Remain, but are very pro EEA/EFTA, which is still not being part of the EU. But for May and Co, that still requires FoM which is a big, big No, No to the point of total irrationality.

North hasn't enough physical capital/ brute force for his proposals.

If leaving the EU had been planned, organised, debated honestly, it could be happening now without deportations and food shortages.

I don't think that was the agenda of those who funded Leave.

Peregrina · 21/09/2017 07:31

Now I like that last part sentence in 'To a largely empty room' once Brexit is history. I hope that people wake up and realise that Brexit is a stupid idea and needs to be made history asap.
