It seems not many people have?

After JC Juncker's latest speech, I am even happier to be leaving. The federalist view will take the EU even further from the people it is supposedly governing, so the big guns will assume ever greater influence. It has never been about preventing migration for me: I accept and welcome all those willing to put their shoulders to the wheel of democracy and the greater good of society.

How does the Enabling act promote democracy?

MichaelFabricantsHair · 14/09/2017 20:19

I don't claim that Jezza is some sort of magic Brexit bullet but I'd much rather he was PM than the Maybot. A girl can dream.

MichaelFabricantsHair · 14/09/2017 20:23

Besides Bear you played a part in inflicting David Cameron upon us so pipe down WinkGrin

MissBabbs · 14/09/2017 20:24

Voted leave and still happy-just wish it could happen sooner.

Well, the important thing is that we "get on with" Brexit, and meanwhile we mustn't waste our delicate little heads thinking about complicated things like that. We must sit back and have faith in our superiors (who are not, in any way, elite power hungry, mostly old white men) to bring about the Sunlit Uplands. Perhaps in a few decades, when we've finished reflecting on more suitable topics (such as what colour ribbons to put in our hair), we vaguely consider whether our vote has, indeed delivered all that terribly important democracy, sovereignty and control.

^^

Could you elaborate missbabbs?

What do we have to look forward to?

Guilty as charged but even he thought it was a really really bad idea.

This thread was quite helpful to me in summarising the speech.

Yet he thought along with Gideon that austerity and abolishing things like the Independent Living Fund were great ideas, so he was hardly the font of all things sensible. I'm going off on a tangent again but the loss of the ILF has a detrimental impact on a loved one. It still makes me cross.

Bearbehind · 14/09/2017 21:00

michael That's really why giving all the powers to the government of the day was never a good idea anyway.

'Taking back control' was always bollocks, more so if you didn't agree with the policies of the current government,

MichaelFabricantsHair · 14/09/2017 21:15

It wasn't about taking back control for me. I just don't like long distance governance. Loath the conservatives but accept that they somehow keep getting voted into power. Will always vote to try and stop them though.

Peregrina · 14/09/2017 21:17

Interesting what Juncker really said, instead of the Mail's take on what he wanted him to say so that they could keep up the anti-EU propaganda.

buzzbeebee · 14/09/2017 21:21

Can I ask for those that voted for Brexit, did all parts of the UK come into your consideration when voting, in particular Northern Ireland? Or did you not realise the impact it would have in Northern Ireland or did you just not care about the impact on Northern Ireland?
Does anyone have any vision of how the border will work? I can't see it working what so ever! Is there much news coverage of how Brexit is affecting Northern Ireland in England/Wales/Scotland?

Bearbehind · 14/09/2017 21:22

michael what additional governance do you now think we have which is positive, because from where I'm standing, there's nothing good.

MichaelFabricantsHair · 14/09/2017 21:34

I don't think there's much good going on either; I'd quite like to abolish the House of Lords and replace them with average, run of the mill people like me who know what it's like to have been poor, disabled, a carer and so on. And you, if you'd like to join me in my big takeover Grin

fakenamefornow · 14/09/2017 21:36

No, hardly any. I don't know about Wales or Scotland but most English people I know don't give a shit about NI. I've had Leavers call me a goady shit for even mentioning NI.

Gibraltar is another issue. There was and always has been a tiny, tiny risk of the UK and Spain going to war over Gibraltar. Brexit as increased that risk. Still a tiny risk, I don't loose any sleep over it (I do about NI) I believe the risk really is very small, but we have definitely voted to increase it.

Fully expect Leaves to come on saying I'm being hysterical and melodramatic it's all going to be wonderful and these issues are easily solved and everybody will be happy with the solution.

One thing about previous generations of politicians was that some of them did have a better understanding of how the other half lived. Take e.g. Clement Attlee, although he himself was a toff, he'd worked in the East End and saw poverty. Most of them had served in one or two wars.
Now taking e.g. Hammond, the Chancellor, he admits he's no idea.

Laaadyofthehousespeaking · 14/09/2017 21:40

Nope I voted remain.
No point in still being upset about losing the vote !
I'm finding it really scary how the pound is pretty much worthless ATM and sure to get worse until someone in the government makes some decisions.
I just hope in the end it works out, that Britain becomes great again, jobs aren't lost and that immigration is carefully managed to keep us safe but we still remain a diverse nation Brew

MichaelFabricantsHair · 14/09/2017 21:41

Yet the people of NI didn't exactly vote overwhelmingly to stay in the EU themselves, did they?

MichaelFabricantsHair · 14/09/2017 21:44

Peregrina most politicians now are out of touch. Which is probably a big reason behind the leave vote.

I bet Hammond doesn't know the price of a loaf of bread and he's in charge of the budget!

Bearbehind · 14/09/2017 21:46

There is a definite trend on this thread; Remainers say they've not changed their mind and explain why.

Leavers say the same, wave a flag (or other such rhetoric) then disappear.

With 1 notable exception, there is no tangible reason why they're happy with their choice.

Peregrina · 14/09/2017 21:52

most politicians now are out of touch. Which is probably a big reason behind the leave vote.

One reason for this is the way trade unions have been hobbled and Local Authorities stripped of many of their functions. At one time a fairly ordinary person could cut their political teeth in these organisations and then try for Parliament.

MichaelFabricantsHair · 14/09/2017 21:54

I haven't seen any flag waving, bear. I don't think people are running away either? It's not like posters have bitchplopped a load of love for Nigel Fromage onto the thread and legged it with their Union Jack between their legs.

I for one try to be very honest with people regarding my stance on Brexit, despite being regularly lumped into a homogenous ball with every orher leaver that there is.
