I'm no rtb but I'll give it a shot, though her efforts deserve much more than me.

The August negotiation round has, well, fizzled out in much the same way as any other. It's taken over a year to get to written position papers and there's still no clue as to a direction from the UK government.

Japan, meanwhile, is about to sign off on a deal with the EU. A deal we want to copy.

@faisalislam
^but if post brexit britain's trade deal with third biggest economy in world is to be based on Brussels' deal, what about rest? TTIP? Canada?
...when PM signs off statements like this on primacy of EU-third party deals, one wonders how temporary the temporary customs union will be^

The NHS is now launching a drive to recruit foreign GPs, like the ones that have left thanks to Brexit. It's a good job they'll be £350m a week better off now. Oh hang on...

Let's help the people who need it most. As long as they aren't farmers or manufacturers of course. Greater good and all that you know. FFS.

It really never ceases to amaze me how the free market stuff gets touted when also arguing that free market is not where were headed.

Literally can't have it both ways. Though I suppose that yet hasn't dawned on a lot of people.

A wee bit of the alternative view from Economists for Free Trade and Labour Leave.

Is there any analysis from groups that don't have names like 'Getting the fuck out of Europe' or 'I luv Angela' because frankly I don't believe any of it.

Norway sovereign wealth fund investing heavily in the UK. Perhaps they know something we don't?

Really? Does this need explaining why this a bad thing to a Lexiter?

Railways. That's all I'm going to say. Railways.

Find an article in the Independent a bit confusing. I read in some propaganda article that May had it 'in writing' that the UK would could just cut and paste the EU deal with Japan.

"However, countries such as Japan have warned it is impossible to determine what a deal with the UK would look like until the Brexit deal is done – and Britain’s future access to the EU market is clear."

And chuckling at the bit where the UK is pushing Brussels to tie up the EU deal with Japan before Brexit.

Cailleach1 · 05/09/2017 15:32

About time they got it together.

PattyPenguin · 05/09/2017 15:33

One paragraph from the Brexit Central piece.

"A natural concern is whether unilateral free trade might put UK manufacturing at risk. In fact, the resulting lower prices and competition not only helps consumers but can fire productivity improvements which will boost long run wages and profits."

The only productivity improvements that could enable UK manufacturing to compete with imports at lower prices (because manufactured / grown in countries with lower wages) would involve wholescale automation. After the initial capital costs, the only ongoing costs of robots / agricultural machines are wear and tear and the wages of the very few humans tending them. Profits might be boosted, but not wages, not for the vast majority.

There might be openings as servants to the robots' owners, provided that they spend any time in the UK.

Interesting to see if Kate Hoey votes in support of the sidelining of parliament. And giving so much power to the Con's. If so, you'd wonder why she doesn't just walk across the floor.

lalalonglegs · 05/09/2017 15:50

I would lay money on Kate Hoey voting with the Conservatives Angry.

RedToothBrush · 05/09/2017 15:57

The name 'Brexit Central' makes me of a station I visited in Belgrade when I visited about ten years ago.

It had been built in the 1990s under Milosevic. It had beautiful magnificent escalators and was incredibly grand.

The trouble is, the country ran out of money and it became a folly of his time as President.

It had no train line.

Howabout - I must say that the article from 'Brexit central' - shame about the name - pretty much sums up exactly where I am coming from as a leaver. Gove has already talked about changing the farming subsidies away from being worked out on acreage which just makes rich farmers richer. He has also stated that subsidies should be directly linked to environmental improvements and benefits.

Corcory · 05/09/2017 16:02

Hashi - who's arguing that free trade isn't where we are heading?

Red Norway buying UK sterling bonds and a bit of property in London - not FDI or our infrastructure. Looks like they think the currency is a good buy now and London property still a safe hedge.

HashiAsLarry · 05/09/2017 16:18

corcory I said free market. It's an important distinction. And you yourself were arguing against it only yesterday.

Any MP who reads this, then votes for the bill unamended clearly doesn't really want to be an MP at all. Total surrender to executive power.

rtb nothing more than 'how can I be of service mr president?' I'm sure.
