A Brexiters chat with a German on a Portuguese beach.

themueslicamel · 09/08/2017 14:05

Just got back from Portugal and when there was on s beach where I left my shoes on s rock, s nice German chap brought them over and asked me where I was from (London) and how I voted in the referendum.

I was honest and told him I backed leave and we had an interesting conversation.

I told him my reasons for doings so, pro Europe, anti EU and confirmed I was for immigration, just having controls over who we let in and in what number.

I said we should and will take our share of refugees however I did not like the way the EU was going with the EU army on the horizon and feels we should look to trading freely with the rest of the world too.

He said many Germans feel let down as they need us as an economic powerhouse to pay in and we should close the borders with Africa and send all of the migrants back.

Some of his views seemed to be along the lines of what is often thrown against brexiters, and I appreciate it was a lone view but closing borders and sending people back seemed at least to him to be the way forward.

Not sure where I am going with this, just thought it may be of interest on this forum and provide an alternate (albeit limited) prospective.

Wow Bathilda, you managed to interview the entire population of Germany in one week?

Impressive.

Or alternatively what you meant to say was you also spoke to some Germans, specifically those working in engineering, who didn't understand why the majority of those who voted in our referendum choose the leave box.

What was you saying about confirmation bias?!?

bathildabagshot1 · 14/08/2017 19:36

I was just offering a different view to the one above, appealing to absurdism to make your point much?

Well, I tell you how we can gage the average European's attitude toward the EU? We can look at the elections since Brexit and see if any anti EU parties got in.

Austria? Nope
Netherlands? Nope
France? Nope
Germany? TBC, but Merkel is well ahead in the polls.

ShoesHaveSouls · 14/08/2017 20:21

There's a near-zero chance of any other EU countries leaving the EU now. The greatest risk was France - and Marine L-P, and they've made their feelings quite clear in the last election.

No chance of a German exit (Dexit? Grin ) No chance at all. They think we've lost our collective marbles. Have you seen their media? Bar the far-right neo-nazis - they're for staying. There will always be a few anti-EU peeps in any given country, but a few, that's all. Let's face it, Brexit only slipped through on a 51.9: 48.1 margin - and that was with a load of lies.

themueslicamel · 14/08/2017 21:13

I am not a fan of far right (or left) politics either.

You can see how the UK Independence Party has been dropped now the majority of those who bothered to vote got what they wanted.

Single issue parties never last.

It's like those moronic white supremacy arseholes in the US, they won't win

Certainly hope not OP. I've been following Charlottesville, and surprised there's not more about it on MN (or have I missed it?)

To have people waving the swastika and doing Nazi salutes on the US streets is fairly shocking, even with Trump as President. I've seen numerous tweets saying 'US Soldiers died fighting these flags..."

Racism disappears when you discover atheism in my view, once you establish that your melatonin levels are based on where you ancestors left Africa and how far from the equator they settled, extremism is cretinous.

I wish we could pull together over brexit though....

I wish we could pull together over brexit though....

What does this even mean?

themueslicamel · 14/08/2017 21:58

What does this even mean?

Accept it's happening and work together to get the UK in the best position to negotiate the best possible deals globally and with the EU

OP posts:
ShoesHaveSouls · 14/08/2017 22:00

We can't pull together over brexit, until the racism desists. I have heard and witnessed too many "when are you going home" comments to people who have built there lives here, who are doing this country good.

Nigel Farage's poster was reminiscent of Nazi Germany's posters - Amber Rudd's speech was reminiscent of Nazi Germany. Sickeningly.

ShoesHaveSouls · 14/08/2017 22:02

"Getting our country back" bollocks was repeated at the weekend at Charlottesville. It's bollocks, racist, shitty bollocks. It's always been our country. UK and US are a country of immigrants.

NameChangerGalore · 14/08/2017 22:07

Haven't read the thread but I do live in France where I haven't met a single person who thinks that Brexit is anything other than madness, even though some do understand a degree of frustration.

twofingerstoEverything · 14/08/2017 22:11

Why should we 'accept' something we believe is ruinous?

How are we going to 'work together'? Do you mean we should stop opposing Brexit, stop commenting on it altogether? Why shouldn't we point out the deficiences? Why shouldn't we talk about the useless shower of people who are meant to be leading us towards this brave new world? Why shouldn't we resist something that we see as a ridiculous and damaging? All we've has since the referendum are meaningless soundbites and talk of the 'will of the people', 'enemies', 'saboteurs' etc. If a positive vision of Brexit had emerged, if we'd seen some dynamic, visionary leadership, there might be something to 'get behind', but for the time being at least... it's a no from me. I'll be in London marching against Brexit on September 9th and will continue to oppose it as much as possible. I don't believe in it and want to be able to look my DC in the eye in the future and say I had nothing to do with this shitshower.

themueslicamel · 14/08/2017 23:30

I guess that's your democratic right, even if I don't agree with you.

Just out of interest, how many people are going?

How many attended the last ones.

Generally interested if the numbers are increasing or reducing?

OP posts:
bathildabagshot1 · 14/08/2017 23:36

Tens of the thousands to hundreds of thousands attended the last one.

The counter march from the angry people was poorly attended, in fact many of them think Brexit has happened.

themueslicamel · 14/08/2017 23:49

I wonder how many actually voted on the 23rd June.....

OP posts:
bathildabagshot1 · 14/08/2017 23:56

Virtually all will have done. The pro Brexit vote was the one swung by the people who don't usually turn out.

user1481838270 · 15/08/2017 00:04

I went of a little holiday last week to London.

I got chatting to my London cabbie. My cabbie wanted to bring back hanging and claimed all Londoners felt the very same as he did and would vote for capital punishment given half a chance.

A but like themueslicamel, I do feel quite the expert and rather pleased with myself after this little chat.

whatwouldrondo · 15/08/2017 00:07

How many of the 100,000 who marched in London in support of the EU actually voted? Most of them I would imagine, apart from the children of course. It was a very mixed bunch socially, and age wise as well. Why would they have turned out to March if they hadn't voted, or do you think marches are only for young anarchists or some other stereotype you entertain as marching but not voting? Great speechs from Alistair Campbell, Nick Clegg and Lammy. It was just good to be reassured that many people felt the same way, as with the women's march which was also very diverse (except for gender), and both were held entirely in good spirits, and with lots of positive support from the Police.

Thank you very much but I certainly have read the thread, themueslicamel. Grin Grin

themueslicamel · 15/08/2017 00:18

At no point have I said I was an "expert"

Ffs, it was supposed to be a non shouty talking point, wish I never posted it....

OP posts:
ShoesHaveSouls · 15/08/2017 00:28

No one's being particularly shouty right now. Not everyone agrees with you? Nearly 50% of the Uk doesn't agree with you...or me. The country is split. Not healthy - but blame David Cameron/the Tories. He's done this. And telling people to buck up and unite when we are heading into economic and political uncertainty, led by a ship of inept fools, is not going to work, because Brexit is going to be shit.

ShoesHaveSouls · 15/08/2017 00:31

And, before you say anything, of course it's going to be shit. David Davis is making such a pig's ear out of things that the EU think our ineptness is a cunning plan. God almighty - what a time to be alive.

ShoesHaveSouls · 15/08/2017 00:37

And before you say anything else, my negative thoughts on Brexit, as a housewife raising 3 children in Kent, will have no actual impact on Brexit - positive or negative.

I could be sat here thinking beautiful thoughts of unicorns, rainbows and fairy dust - still no impact on the outcome of brexit.
