Westministenders: Transition

Last thread opener, it was all about the government buzz word being shown to listen at every opportunity.

Now transition is creeping in as people realise that no we can't just do a settlement, arrange a new trade deal with the EU and have a whole host of other deals in place in two years.

Who'd have thought.

We will be getting Brexit because we give in to threats of terrorism. Not quite getting how that takes back control.

But Brexit will be good. It will be glorious. And in the long term we will be better off for it.

Er ok.

"Nana, Grandad .... what's 'retiring' ?"

PattyPenguin · 19/07/2017 17:11

If food does get scarce, there'll be a good deal more thievery from gardens and especially from allotments, so security will be a problem.

Increase to working age recommendation predates Brexit as do issues in student finance and social care.

mother I have transported my Worldly possessions to and from the US, including the family car. I then sold the same car to someone in another EU country. The import and export logistics and timescales were not markedly different. I have absolutely no doubt there is a lot of negotiation over red tape to be sorted. However my personal knowledge also indicates there is a lot of hyperbolic nonsense being promulgated.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/07/2017 17:45

lh The various firms I've worked with in Germany and Sweden have no problem getting visas for scientists from India, China, Korea etc.
Uk citizens would be treated the same - I'm certain the EU wouldn't be spiteful against ordinary bods, especially when the employer declares a specific need for them.

These are not Nobel prize winners either, just bright young or middle-aged scientists in fields where there are shortages.

They are entitled to bring in a spouse and any kids in education, including uni.
After 5 years, they can apply for indefinite leave, which atm is pretty easy to get in Germany, my colleagues tell me.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/07/2017 17:48

howabout People and their possessions moving countries or continents is totally different to moving goods.
I presume you didn't attempt to transport any bullocks or lorryloads of grain or cheese into the US ?

BigChocFrenzy · 19/07/2017 17:57

Examine the WTO rules about equal treatment for every country not specified in a signed trade deal.
Examine how "third countries" are treated by the EU or any other trade bloc.
It doesn't matter if standards are identical, if there is no official trade deal

btw, no use looking at US- EU trade.
TTIP was stopped but there are 55 MRAs (Mutual Trade Agreements) between the US and EU which make trade fairly friction-free

A no deal Brexit means Year Zero:
the UK would have NOTHING, no MRAs, no FTAs etc with any country, except maybe Canada
Uk exports to Canada are a tiny fraction of UK exports to the EU.

Brexit is NOT turning back the clock to before the Uk joined the then EC,
because the UK at that time had several dozen different trade deals with various countries and blocs
These will take several years to replace, during which time UK trade will suffer.

Letter in the FT ( not behind the paywall) from a number of Scottish luminaries from across the political spectrum as well as from business and academia talking about the damage that Brexit is already doing (and will continue to do) and that in a democracy it should be possible to review and think again.

Unfortunately, to use a Scottish expression, I think that they are "on tae plums"

Cailleach1 · 19/07/2017 18:31

If everything is just as manageable without it, I wonder why the single market is regarded as a desirable thing at all. It shouldn't matter to people who think this if single market, customs union or whatever is retained. Out is just as manageable as in with that point of view, I suppose.

The US had a ban on a lot of meat products from some EU countries. Especially the UK as the epicentre of the Foot and Mouth Disease and the countries where it crossed to from there. In turn there are issues with US meat and the EU not loving the addition of growth hormones. Again, won't be a stumbling block for the UK after Brexit. Bloody EU denying people's rights to be poisoned.

Also, mother a private individual bringing in their own possessions comes under completely different rules to a business wanting to import or export goods commercially

BigChocFrenzy · 19/07/2017 19:14

My Indian and Chinese colleagues who came to Germany to work of course didn't wish to import their cars, but it would have been quite complicated with papers etc if they had say a 200k supercar that would be worth the cost.

They also had to list any possessions they shipped over and these went through customs.

Whereas colleagues from another EU country like Greece or Sweden just drove in a van packed with their furniture etc, straight through all borders. no checks.

HashiAsLarry · 19/07/2017 19:28

mother thanks to my old boss whenever someone tries to explain differences in project scale my mind goes there. He referred to is as having to 'go full ted' on someone to try to get them to understand that whilst there was no doubt both sets of cows existed, the person was failing to grasp the difference in scale.

Murdochs Warn That Delaying Sky Deal Would Hurt U.K. Post Brexit

Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox Inc. warned that any delay in approving its 11.7 billion pound ($15.2 billion) acquisition of Sky Plc would slow investment and signal to other companies that the U.K. wasn’t “open for business” as the country leaves the European Union.

Brexit opportunities for blackmail.

The UK government covers itself in glory once again Hmm

UK threatens to return radioactive waste to EU

In what is being taken in Brussels as a thinly veiled threat, a paper setting out the UK position for the negotiations stresses the right “to return radioactive waste … to its country of origin” should negotiations collapse.

Nurse reveals she left the NHS after being charged £80 for parking as she treated patient having cardiac arrest

This is good economics. Charge staff for parking, so they quit and then you have to pay more for agency staff.

Prison officers permanently banned from striking after Government wins High Court bid

'It's only a matter of time before a member of staff gets killed,' warns deputy general-secretary of Prison Officers' Association following court ruling

“We heard just yesterday from the prison inspector Peter Clarke about the lack of safety in our young offender institutions. It appears that our members now can’t do anything about it,” he said.

“If someone is not safe, and staff now can’t walk out of that area and keep themselves safe, what do they do now? Following this ruling, it is only a matter of time before a member of staff gets severely injured or killed.”

He denied that the action they had taken earlier in the year amounted to a strike, and claimed the union was being “handcuffed” by the Ministry of Justice because of a lack of funds to resolve a severe staffing and funding shortage.

“It’s not striking. It was taking action to protect our members and themselves. We’re saying we couldn’t go in there because it’s not safe, and that the employer should be ensuring that they are keeping us safe,” he said.

Government not listening. It's only a matter of time before someone gets gets killed.

Gosh, this sounds horribly familiar to other warnings.
