Westministenders: Transition

Last thread opener, it was all about the government buzz word being shown to listen at every opportunity.

Now transition is creeping in as people realise that no we can't just do a settlement, arrange a new trade deal with the EU and have a whole host of other deals in place in two years.

Who'd have thought.

We will be getting Brexit because we give in to threats of terrorism. Not quite getting how that takes back control.

But Brexit will be good. It will be glorious. And in the long term we will be better off for it.

Er ok.

Just watching Federer celebrating victory and waving to his twin girls and twin boys in the crowd. Impossible not to comment on Swiss efficiency really. Smile

Fingers crossed for a new Dr Who half as good looking as David Tennant or Peter Capaldi. Maybe DD just needs a sonic screwdriver?

DividedKingdom · 16/07/2017 16:11

Unfortunately they don't work on wood. Which is apparently what his brain is made of Wink

John Simpson @ johnsimpsonnews
Sun on Sunday: Trump to May 'When I know I'm going to get a better reception [in UK] I'll come & not before.' Could be a bit of time, then.

There's something almost sinister in that rejection of the UK. Behave and get your citizens in line before we do business...

Well Phil, even a woman can be Dr Who.

Can't wait for the Daily Mail Melt Down.

BiglyBadgers · 16/07/2017 16:42

DH was saying this morning that the very best reason to have a female Dr Who was so we could all watch the Mail and the misogynists on Twitter implode.

This has improved my day considerably Grin

mathanxiety · 16/07/2017 16:43

The Irish way is to provide a listening ear to all sides while talking a load of Blarney.

Hmm

Blarney, eh?

Theresa May gains Conservative support to sack ministers

Rank-and-file urges prime minister to bring discipline to feuding cabinet

Theresa May has the support of the majority of the Conservative party if she chooses to sack ministers and enforce discipline on her feuding cabinet, after a weekend of leadership manoeuvres and poisonous leaks.

A message has been sent to the prime minister by the executive of the 1922 committee, which represents the party rank-and-file, saying she has its support to stay on and deliver Brexit in March 2019.

Some days, I find myself needing to go back to this excellent post by lurking in order to restore my faith in humanity:

^I think actually, xxx is way ahead of us when it comes to equality.

Whereas most people on this thread are only able to see the rest of the world as a complex multitude of races, cultures, and creeds - effectively dividing people into myriads of categories, xxx has progressed beyond all that, and only sees two types. "Us" and "them". With just the tiniest of nudges they might be able to bridge that final gap and see everyone as being all the same. It has really opened my eyes as to who is the true bigot here.^

red will Piers do in the meantime?
^Very disappointed Dr Who is now a woman.
Massive insult to the non-binary gender-neutral community.^

HashiAsLarry · 16/07/2017 16:46

Argh, quote fails. All my own fault too! Blush

BiglyBadgers · 16/07/2017 16:57

I find the anti-female Dr business particularly entertaining and even as someone who is not a huge fan I am aware that it has been established that timelords can and do change sex. In fact the Doctor himself has mentioned changing sex in the past. It's always fun watching people tie themselves in knots claiming the doctor must be male to be true to the story, but managing only to expose their own misogyny Grin

HashiAsLarry · 16/07/2017 17:06

Good old Ian Dunt
What's amazing to me is that guys like this have been watching Dr Who for years without picking up a single one of its messages.

Title of this thread seems to be all the more appropriate given the new Doctor Who Grin

And we had female time lords in the 1970s.

Romana, anyone ? (Mary Tamm, Lalla Ward [formerly Mrs Richard Dawkins])

(God, I am so like my DM at times ....)

BiglyBadgers · 16/07/2017 17:46

I saw one person on Twitter saying the Doctor was clearly a man because it is a timelord not a timelady. I seriously suspect that some of these people have never actually watched an episode in their lives.

Go on, LH, I dare you to go on that thread and post "What price Freedom and Sovereignty?!" Grin

Cailleach1 · 16/07/2017 18:02

Amazing to see Federer back. I think he is the bee's knees. Grace in victory or defeat. I caught a bit of an interview with him and how he wanted balance. To be a good father and husband as well. 8th win. Quite something and couldn't have happened to a better role model.

Gush over.

Cailleach1 · 16/07/2017 18:10

Laughing at Sunday Politics and Neil asking Fox about the leak wrt Hammond. Foxy has form doesn't he? Maybe Gove or Johnson. Shower of &^%@'s (in my opinion). They are still talking about a transitional deal as the trade agreement.

Labour completely cherry picking. Not possible to be out of everything and member of single market. Annoyed that McDonnell and social murder has taken over the media focus on the whole Grenfell issue. Those survivors should be centre stage now and the spotlight is off their treatment while the whole media talks about McDonnell's statement. Kensington and Chelsea conflicted and should not still be responsible for their housing. Independent Commission should be in there prior to an investigation. Nothing about the survivors.

HashiAsLarry · 16/07/2017 18:32

math yup

HashiAsLarry · 16/07/2017 18:35

At least remotely on topic with Dr Who

@CjEggett
I don't want to alarm anyone, but I think the new Dr Who regeneration is being interfered with by Russia #DoctorWho13

PFI, OlennasWimple. Not PPI. PPI in my world is Patient and Public Involvement. In research, that is. Definitely a good thing. We've had quite a few research studies amended in the design stages because experts (as in: people with the actual condition and experience of services) pointed out all the reasons why this piece of research would achieve bugger all.

PFI on the other hand has been pretty much a disaster. Grin

www.independent.ie/irish-news/politics/germans-tell-irish-that-the-british-are-a-disgrace-35935039.html

From that Independent.ie link:

A report on the Ireland-Germany parliamentary friendship group's visit to the Bundestag notes disappointment in Britain's decision to leave the EU by both German and Irish politicians.

The report states that it was a shared view that the UK "acted irresponsibly" and was "ill prepared" for the ongoing Brexit negotiations.

"Both sides agreed that there was no 'upside' to Brexit, and while there were significant bilateral issues for many countries, it was essential that the EU27 act in the best interests of the EU as a whole," the report said.

The group met a number of key German politicians and officials during the three-day visit.

Brexit was the main focus of the trip and the Irish delegation emphasised the impact Britain leaving the EU would have on Ireland's economy.

"The delegation continually stressed that it remains essential that our EU partners, especially Germany, are aware of the unique implications of Brexit for Ireland," the report said.

"Flexible and imaginative solutions are required to address the unique circumstances on the island of Ireland, in particular with a view to avoiding a hard border, which are compatible with protecting the integrity of the Single Market and Ireland's place in it," it added.

None of that sounds like Blarney to me, Howabout. None of that sounds like listening to all sides.
It is clear that the Irish have got their act together and are on top of their agenda. It is also clear that Ireland is firmly pro EU and not at all impressed by Brexit.

RedToothBrush · 16/07/2017 19:02

Food getting more expensive... Just wait til people go on their holiday to Spain this year and only get a single euro for a pound... Only a couple of weeks before that reality starts to hit a few...

It's depressing and shocking even when you are expecting it and have planned for it.

OP posts:
PurplePeppers · 16/07/2017 19:51

And people have also not realised how choice is reducing and how the quality of the food itself is going down.

In effect, supermarkets are doing everything possible to keep prices down so that means less choice and less quality and even like this, the prices are still up.

mathanxiety · 16/07/2017 20:14

(not that I am even sure who they mean by the "British Finance Committee"?)

It is a select committee of the House of Commons, Howabout.
