Westministenders: The bookends to a year of political chaos. Just how far have we come?

The 15th June 2016.

The Thames was filled with a flotilla of boats in a publicity stunt for the Leave campaign to draw attention to fisheries. Nigel Farage and Kate Hoey in their heads thought they were Leonardo and Kate, but the moment was rather more titanic in nature and could not have been more Alan Partridge if they had tried. Coming up behind was Bob Gedolf in a shameful and cringeworthy display of swearing and abuse that really didn’t help the Remain camp in anyway. Largely unnoticed was a small boat with a family following it all unfold…

The next day things went from fiasco to horror.

Farage unveiled the Dog Whistle Poster and Jo Cox was murdered. And the UK seemed set on its course for 7 days later when the world was turned upside down by the referendum itself.

14th June 2017.

Fast forward 365 days later and another tragedy unfolded. This time of a very different nature but with no less political significance.
Grenfell.

A moment of national shame. A symbol of so many things that had come to pass in the previous twelve months.

The election just the previous week had changed the direction of travel we seemed to be headed and left the Prime Minister exposed and looking wildly out of touch. The Maybot was given one more chance.

And the Maybot seems to be failing the test of her party who had the grace to grant her a second chance.

The Queen dressed in the same shade of blue, May delivered her ‘victory speech’ in, ignored the security threat and visited the ranks of the poor and the forgotten. A deliberate message to May not to forget who she serves? A Queen who feels aggrieved and angry by May’s behaviour? Who knows.

As for Brexit. The government looks lost. Adrift. The ‘Fight of the Summer’ over the EU’s plan for talks sounds out the window despite the denials from the Brexit Department. Hard Brexit is still on the cards. Apparently. But what does anyone believe now? May’s and the Brexiteers domination of the agenda is shattered, its power starting to be questioned.

What next?

This evening the anger is building.

Who knows, what will happen. Some of it might be predictable, but the future is far from certain and we have definitely entered a new era. We just don’t know who will lead it, or what its ambition or what the end goal now is.

What we do know, more acutely than ever is that we are all human and the wise words of Jo Cox about having ‘More in Common’ ring though ever more strongly.

Once again we feel ‘on the brink’.

Michelle Lowe's clearly been to the K Livingstone Institute of Media Training.

citroenpresse · 20/06/2017 11:35

EU confirms Britain will be leaving single market and customs union.

This is so crap . Does the EU still want GB to remain? If so, could also be sturdy negotiating from Michel Barnier. The deal will be so dreadful, people will want back in but on far worse terms.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 20/06/2017 11:40

citreon has that been announced? How. It's day 2. Not much of a negotiation is it? But we are saying that's whatever want they will say ok. But....what about the citizen rights?

At this ratecdone and dusted in a week. Then the fall out.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 20/06/2017 11:42

EU confirms Britain will be leaving single market and customs union

Oh crap. This negotiation isn't going to be drawn out is it?
We are just going to throw ourselves off the cliff and see how much of our economy survives. Sad

Mrsmartell08 · 20/06/2017 11:42

We begged to get in back in the 70s
We will be begging again
Don't leavers get that the cause if this brexit mess is austerity...not immigration?
The govt has cut services and NHS and education and the right wing press has fanned the racist xenophobic flames.
Sigh.
It's happening and there is fuck all we can do now...

PattyPenguin · 20/06/2017 11:44

EU confirms Britain will be leaving single market and customs union

Nothing on the MSM yet - I'm watching Reuters, BBC Business live, Guardian, Indy...

Can't find this?....

Sostenueto · 20/06/2017 11:57

Are the Tories hell bent on completely ruining everything for the government after them?

Sostenueto · 20/06/2017 11:58

Thank you kindly for all your help regarding gdd.Flowers

Sostenueto · 20/06/2017 12:00

Me thinks we may have world trade deals already sown up?

BigChocFrenzy · 20/06/2017 12:04

I can only find that the Chancellor, Hammond, has said this
It may be that the EU negotiators repeated what the UK side had told them was their aim

afaik, the E27 would be happy if the UK chose EEA / EFTA, the least painful solution for both sides
However, it would mean accepting FOM for workers with a job same as EU really) and EFTA court

  • then negotiating to add Financial Passporting for the CIty
BigChocFrenzy · 20/06/2017 12:05

If the Uk can't accept FOM and ECJ or EFTA court, then they can no longer stay in the single market

Mrsmartell08 · 20/06/2017 12:11

Sos..with whom?
The US? Trump has made it clear he's not interested. "America first"
Canada?
India?
China?
Not without FOM
There will still be immigration...just not from the EU.

Sostenueto · 20/06/2017 12:13

Goodness knows! Don't panic people it could all be hearsay!

Sostenueto · 20/06/2017 12:15

Tories I reckon have a deal brewing with US biggest healthcare insurer.

Mrsmartell08 · 20/06/2017 12:15

Bit late for don't panic...

histinyhandsarefrozen · 20/06/2017 12:22

Don't panic, just pretend its like the 2nd world war.

7Days · 20/06/2017 12:26

I bet you are right Sosteneto

HashiAsLarry · 20/06/2017 12:31

Don't panic. The boe have just told us we're sinking our economy, but don't worry. It'll all be fine. Ffs Angry

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 20/06/2017 12:34

Sos yes to sell our NHS but that is not Brexit related.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/06/2017 12:39

sos No there are NOT a load of other trade deals sown up.
Totally wishful thinking

We don't even know if we can trade under WTO rules - any existing member with a grudge or who better terms, can block our WTO quotas and schedules for quite some time after Brexit.

The Uk is not allowed to have separate trade deals with other countries until the day after Brexit
In any case, other countries cannot negotiate properly until they know what kind of Brexit deal the UK has - e.g. WTO or EEA / EFTA are totally different.

Trade deals usually take 5-10 years to negotiate - so what does the UK do in the meantime ?
It would have to accept quickly what other countries offer - which may be less favourable than the EU deals with those countries that we currently share
e.g. India wants much easier visas and more of them for its workers, students and families

So far, only Canada has said they don't need to negotiate - they will just copy and paste the CETA trade deal they have with the EU, same terms for the UK

So, only one deal we can count on so far, replacing only a tiny fraction of the hundreds of trade arrangements we lose if we leave the EU

citroenpresse · 20/06/2017 12:43

Source Barnier press conference as reported in The Guardian

"The United Kingdom has decided to leave the European Union, it is not the other way around. The United Kingdom is going to leave the European Union, single market and the customs union, not the other way around. So, we each have to assume our responsibility and the consequences of our decisions. And the consequences are substantial."

However....
The only office press office release is much more tempered (though not necessarily final delivery).

europa.eu/rapid/press-release_SPEECH-17-1704_en.htm

And re transparency, do we get this from Davis or Fox hahahah. Who has Barnier been consulting:

ec.europa.eu/transparencyinitiative/meetings/meeting.do?host=fa02e4e1-d738-413e-8b4e-ed8381a90e86

BigChocFrenzy · 20/06/2017 12:46

With Brexit, the UK will be so desperate for any deal, that Trump can get what he wants - and the Tories love TTIP anyway, because it gives more power to companies and removes it from the rest of us:

The US will have the right to sell us beef with hormones, chlorine- washed cheap meat
To sue the UK govt for any regulations that cost profit, e.g. laws banning ads for cigarettes, or specifying warnings on wrappers
The US will have the right to buy into the NHS and take over services

BigChocFrenzy · 20/06/2017 12:49

citroen Barnier is just saying this is what Britain decided and also saying that this is NOT the EU who decided.
That the UK is responsible for its decisions and consequences

Basically the EU saying "you did it; don't blame us"

If DD goes back next year and asks to join EEA / EFTA, I'd be astonished if the EU refuse, even if a lot of time and resources have been wasted on discussions up to then
