Westministenders: Strong and Stable Theresa Date with Destiny

WELLLLL

Its just before 2.00am.

So far its the YouGov model all the way. Still a long way to go but, the Cons are not getting the top of their target list and Labour are doing very well in seats they just 'shouldn't be'.

Corbyn is now favourite to take the poison chalice of Brexit, but they may not be the largest party yet.

This is looking right now like 1974 not 1983.

May's potted regardless. I look forward to her resignation speech. Its still entirely possible that our next government is a Tory Minority under another leader.

The LDs are having a rough night so far. They are loosing deposits all over the place as they are squeezed out. But they still might hold the balance of power yet. Though they are pledged not to go into coalition.

Another election in the autumn? Brexit delayed and going soft and squishy?

We know Theresa May can't now negotiate Brexit for Britain because she told us losing majority would destroy her authority---and it has.

RedToothBrush · 09/06/2017 10:22

May is vulnerable to both Euro sceptics and pro Europeans. That's the problem.

That's why she called the Election in the first place.

Laura k really is talking out of her arse. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and say it's lack of sleep.

Dd (11) played this for me a few weeks ago she says it's how she and her friends feel about Brexit and Trump and the UK government. She is very angry she is too young to vote.

It seems to me that for all the disaster that Brexit Trump and May are, they are galvanising our young and that can only be good.

So delurking to say thank you to Red and everyone on this thread that has kept me sane and informed for the last year.

I would like to dedicate the song to all of you who have been fighting back from an economic immigrant (formerly known as an expat) and citizen of nowhere.

DUP are anti-abortion, anti-LGBT social conservatives. Would be astonishing if movement of youth in #GE2017 brought them nearer government.

squishysquirmy · 09/06/2017 10:41

The DUP are awful, but although I have seen a lot of panic about them on other threads, they won't have much chance of pushing through right wing legislation, will they? All it would take is for a few Tory back benchers to rebel (and there are still progressive Tory MPs) to block it.
And, one positive is that we know how efficient the Tories are at shafting their minority coalition partners. Maybe within a few years the DUP will come to regret the partnership....

RedToothBrush · 09/06/2017 10:42

Paul Nuttalls of the Ukips has resigned as leader.

So what happens now? Will May's new government be more unhinged? Or more consensus-seeking?

As @feorag notes: due to EVEL, the new Scottish Tory MPs can't vote for NHS England privatization. May cant get a majority to vote for it.

RedToothBrush · 09/06/2017 10:45

It has to be said that the LDs have had an unlucky night really. They lost these seat by:

St Ives - 312 votes
Ceredigion - 104 votes
Richmond Park - 45 votes
Fife North East - 2 votes

469 vote in total

squishysquirmy · 09/06/2017 10:46

I do get a bit weary of progressive voters being blamed for the rise to power of regressive right wingers. Yes, I know things are complex, but ultimately the voters who are to blame for the DUP are the ones who voted for the DUP. The voters most to blame for Trump are the ones who voted Trump. The voters most to blame for Brexit are the ones who voted for Brexit.

What should the young Labour supporters have done differently - voted Conservative to stop the DUP getting near power? I don't mind a bit of tactical voting, but that's an expectation too far, surely?

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 09/06/2017 10:46

DUP have to get a soft brexit or risk decimation of the NI economy increase in SF votes and a call for a united Ireland. That is what will drive them. Interestingly there have been calls to legalise abortion in NI and a growing grass root mobilisation

Yes they are nutjobs but retaining the Union and preventing any hope of a united Ireland is more important than anything.

I give Theresa the weekend.

I agree with ever on the DUP. Interesting waters ahead re Brexit.

As I said last night I found it hard to believe You Gov giving Vince Cable such a poor chance given what I had seen during the day. In the end Tania Matthias held her vote, Vince's 10000 majority was almost entirely delivered by voters who did not vote in 2015. I saw them yesterday come into the polling station, young people looking not lazy and apathetic, nor stirred up and mouthing off, but just quietly determined. And the turnout was the same, nearly 80% in Richmond, been wondering if I should have gone and knocked up there but it does not look as if getting people out was really the issue...

Care to share Peregrina 🍾

whatwouldrondo · 09/06/2017 11:00

Sorry that should give credit to the 2000 Greens and 1000 Labour who switched.

WeakAndUnstable · 09/06/2017 11:01

So what happens now? Will May's new government be more unhinged? Or more consensus-seeking?

I believe it will certainly be more opposed, that's for sure!

squoosh · 09/06/2017 11:02

Paul Nuttalls of the Ukips has resigned as leader.

Time for the strong and stable leadership of Neil Hamilton to take the helm...

RedToothBrush · 09/06/2017 11:04

Note there is a growling from the grassroots of the Conservative Party here. This is important. What was said on the doorsteps. And whilst the Party is home to swivel eyed loons who are socially regressive, it is also the home of business types who are socially liberal.

The idea of anti-abortion stuff certainly does not have universal appeal. It IS a vote loser in some circles.

Has informal support from DUP and most of party seem to be backing her. For now.

I sincerely hope that Ed Vaizey and those of his persuasion remain true to what he said in his acceptance speech and that the country has rejected a hard Brexit. Treeza has appeased the right wing, and the rest dutifully went along with it, and what has it got them? A minority Government. The right wingers have had their turn and they f**ed up.

squoosh · 09/06/2017 11:06

Arlene Foster must be rubbing her hands with glee. She clung on through the fuel scheme scandal and look where she is now.
