Westministenders: Strong and Stable Theresa Date with Destiny

WELLLLL

Its just before 2.00am.

So far its the YouGov model all the way. Still a long way to go but, the Cons are not getting the top of their target list and Labour are doing very well in seats they just 'shouldn't be'.

Corbyn is now favourite to take the poison chalice of Brexit, but they may not be the largest party yet.

This is looking right now like 1974 not 1983.

May's potted regardless. I look forward to her resignation speech. Its still entirely possible that our next government is a Tory Minority under another leader.

The LDs are having a rough night so far. They are loosing deposits all over the place as they are squeezed out. But they still might hold the balance of power yet. Though they are pledged not to go into coalition.

Another election in the autumn? Brexit delayed and going soft and squishy?

Yes South Thanet could be an issue yet. May needs every seat (and seats she hasn't got). But I'd caution there. There is only one person who can defeat the Tories in that seat, regardless of how serious the issue, and you won't like who it is...

DUP leader Arlene Foster: "It will be difficult for [May] to survive given that she was presumed to come back with maybe a hundred majority"

Will Heaven @ willheaven
Wow. So a DUP condition on coalition, formal or informal, could be May getting the boot.

Sweet.

Do you mean UKIP? Their vote collapsed this time. They really seem to be a one-man pony - and he's tainted these days.

Interestingly, the local paper is trying to get hold of any of the Surrey MPs for their reaction and can't raise them...

RedToothBrush · 09/06/2017 09:30

Norman Smith @ BBCnormans
Tory Bow Group say .."only way to regain momentum is to reinvigorate the party beginning with a leadership election."

In the space of a few mins we have the DUP and the Bow group of Tories seemingly suggesting May must go.

Well.

RedToothBrush · 09/06/2017 09:33

Farage has a personal vote. He doesn't actually need the party imo. In fact to a degree at this point it's possibly a hinderence. He's not tainted. Not with the people who have voted for him and ukip in the past. Those reasons why he's 'tainted' are reasons they like him. Remember he's Trump's kin.

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 09/06/2017 09:36

Michel Barnier @ michelbarnier
#Brexit negotiations should start when UK is ready; timetable and EU positions are clear. Let's put our minds together on striking a deal

Important.

They probably think it better to get rid of May too and try and disentangle us from Trump. Maybe sense ANYONE but May easier to deal with in the interests of EU.

We can only stop the a50 clock if E27 agree, so this is encouraging.

OP posts:
Tanith · 09/06/2017 09:39

I really meant the rumours of links to Russia. With Trump being investigated, and the FBI saying they're interested in Farage, that taints NF by association, doesn't it?

In any case, there are a sizable number of other MPs still being investigated - or were until the election.

RedToothBrush · 09/06/2017 09:42

Not in the eyes of UKIP voters. These are largely the group who see Trump in a favourable light. That's the point, what is taint to one person isn't necesarily to another as the IRA and Corbyn thing have proved to Lynton Crosby, Paul Dacre and Rupert Murdoch.

Flowers Peregrina and thanks red, again and all on the thread. What a night! Still can't believe it. Flags have disappeared from local tory club.

RedToothBrush · 09/06/2017 09:56

Remember wwwwaayyyy back when this all started? And it was a battle between Arron Banks, Murdoch and Dacre for power. Each backed a Tory Party leadership candidate. May was Dacre's. Remember how May wants to regulate the internet and curtail giants like FB, Google etc because of extremists but nothing said of Daily Mail comments section. Remember Murdoch on record as disliking the EU because "they don't do what I tell them". Note rumour that Murdoch threw a fit and stormed out the party when the exit poll was announced.

Well this:

Seems the young don't read papers. All those "tomorrow's papers" programs better shift to "what's the web saying now" to stay relevant.

Leave.eu, the Mail and the Sun not important to the young. And vice versa - the were seen to be easily controlled or lazy/stupid.

@HadleyFreeman
Let's all have a moment of silence for the poor soul who this morning will have to explain "hung parliament" to Trump

HashiAsLarry · 09/06/2017 10:05

The internet may eventually lead to the death of dh's industry but thank god/fuck/anything for it.
My df just cried off an argument with me again because I defeated his daily fail rhetoric with, you know, actual facts

Badders123 · 09/06/2017 10:06

Women....😂

RedToothBrush · 09/06/2017 10:06

BBC news breaking that May believes she can form a government and will be going to the palace later. Has informal support from DUP and most of party seem to be backing her. For now.

One seat to declare. Kensington. Tories just demanded second recount.

I love you young people. It's your future and you are taking back control!!

Golondrina · 09/06/2017 10:08

Placemarking. I think she will manage to cobble together a govt with the DUp, for the time being anyway. But I think Hard Brexit has taken a hit.

What was the turnout overall? 67% or thereabouts? Do they know the youth turnout?

Other election threads still providing me with wry amusement.

"Oh no, we're supposed to be starting Brexit negotiations in 10 days!"

  • Um, who chose the date to invoke Article 50?
  • Who then chose to call a general election after invoking?
  • Who then chose to not campaign by hiding in sheds?

"The pound has collapsed by 2% - it's an economic disaster! See, the markets are wise!"

  • I thought the 17% post-Brexit drop was both tiny and a boon for our exports, a booming economy was sure to follow, and the markets are all know-nothing greedy experts?

"Look, now our government have to ally themselves with repellent political figures!"

  • Trump? Duterte? Saudi Arabia?

"The electorate are fools who didn't understand what they were voting for and fell for unattainable bribes of unicorns and sunlit uplands!"

  • 'Nuff said.

May will arguably be more not less vulnerable to eurosceps and DUP - not recipe for softening any of her Brexit plans

Just officially confirmed - she ll go to Palace at 1230

RedToothBrush · 09/06/2017 10:19

The thing with the DUP is whilst they are hard line they also NEED a deal for trade and a soft border.

Laura K has been prattling about how we will get a harder deal forgetting this minor issue.

Many DUP members and supporters have been applying for Irish passports for god sake!

Westminster has done a lot to ignore NI in this. Stormont might be an issue now though. DUP don't need it. They have direct rule to all intents and purposes.

The idea of no deal is better than a bad deal? Does it still hold. DUP not in formal coalition either.

Question of NI was first on list for Brexit though... So this may be helpful in that respect.
