I was thinking about how I could sum up the general election campaign and well. This said it all.

Theresa May says she will rip up human rights laws to fight terror

Another manifesto change.

pointythings · 06/06/2017 20:00

I am doing Dry June, as I do every year. I have said that if the Tories lose their majority, I will have a glass of wine on Friday.

I expect to go to bed stone cold sober. Can't even do anything about it myself as I am a non-eligible to vote EU national in an incredibly blue seat in East Anglia.

LotisBlue · 06/06/2017 20:03

Thanks for the thread red. I was on some of the earlier ones but stopped posting when it all got too depressing.

I would love to see labour do well on Thursday but I'm not optimistic

squishysquirmy · 06/06/2017 20:08

I'm not getting my hopes up too high - if the Conservatives miss out on their landslide, I will be happy. (well, you know, not actually happy with it, but at least I could shrug and say "it could be worse!")

I am looking forward to this election being over, one way or another - I know that there will still be a lot of fallout, depending on the result, and probably some leadership contests for the minority parties, and the shitstorm of Brexit will pick up apace - but at least some of the election related squabbling, posturing and astroturfing will die down.

RedToothBrush · 06/06/2017 20:08

@SkyNews Theresa May says she will rip up human rights laws to fight terror

This is the thing I'm most afraid of. The Human Rights Laws are not the problem...

Does that mean we are leaving the EHCR? What implications are there for NI and Scotland then?

How long is that going to take to unravel? Why did she drop that promise in the first place?

I just want to bypass Friday morning. The thought of waking up with the dreadful feeling in my stomach that I had on the morning of Brexit and Trump, is stopping me sleeping.
I have to remind myself that I survived the Thatcher years and will survive May. It's my childen I worry for knowing they will have to endure the stress that of lack of money whilst living costs increase cause.

U-turn Theresa is at it again. Her manifesto says: Remain in ECHR. But last minute grab for votes says the opposite.

She's probably in shock about all the negative publicity her track record as Home Secretary has got since last Saturday night.

Clinging onto her absolute belief that the electorate are thick as pigshit, I'd guess it's a last ditch attempt to blame a third party (human rights laws).

Also, she doesn't seem to like humans anyway so win-win Smile

"They underestimated us and the campaign we would mount," says Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn at an event in Birmingham #SNT

Live stream of JC rally to several locations round the country.

She will win, but this campaigning politics won't stop now. It took a fair few goes to de throne Thatcher. Stephen Bush in New Statesman predicts another election in autumn.Shock

HashiAsLarry · 06/06/2017 20:24

Theresa May says she will rip up human rights laws to fight terror

This is what I've been fearing most.

And the people are too stupid to even contemplate the question - how do you stop yourself becoming the enemy!

Peregrina · 06/06/2017 20:25

Crick's just said the campaign rallies for JC are the biggest since Churchill.

Churchill himself was popular, but he didn't win in 1945. Clement Attlee, who had 'a lot to be modest about', did have policies which were popular.

WeakAndUnstable · 06/06/2017 20:26

Yes squiggly, very sorry about your news. It's the unnecessary strife like your situation that boils my blood. And it's why I'm not able to tactically swerve to Labour. Brexit is a big pile of crap and the Lib Dems are the only party who I wish to give my vote. I hope you are OK.

A Tory minister just said: "This is the worst campaign of my entire life"

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-40176539
Election 2017: How do the parties expect to do?

Based on their recent visits, I think the party leaders' choices of venue suggest the Conservatives are expecting to pick up a hefty majority. Labour's expectations are much harder to read.

and

The Tories have been focusing heavily on this pro-Brexit part of England and Wales - and that frontier I drew on the first graph really reflects the Tories' big ambitions in these sorts of seats. A line in the neighbourhood I've drawn in here would give them around 25 of these sorts of seats. Conversely, though, the Tories have scarcely bothered with the strongly pro-Remain seats. I have not drawn a frontier on the basis of one dot - but it does not imply great ambitions for these low-UKIP seats.

And just as I was about to have a break, the Mad King starts shouting "Burn Them All" about human rights law.

Journalists: please ask May exactly how human rights law and ECHR stops her dealing with terrorism.

She will NOT have an answer.

Human rights law does nothing to limit government dealing with terrorism.

But human rights law demonstrates the values that need defending.

Thanks for new thread red] - I do still follow it although I barely have time to read the news let alone comment on it right now!

Adam Wagner‏ @AdamWagner1

  1. Quick thread on Theresa May's statement that human rights laws may change if they interfere with new anti-terrorism laws
  2. She hasn’t been explicit but it could mean a few different things (i) changing Human Rights Act, (ii) replacing with Bill of Rights...
  3. (iii) leaving Human Rights Convention, or (iv) “derogating” from Human Rights Convention
  4. Tory manifesto said human rights law changes will be considered after Brexit. This makes sense as it’s mucho complicated
  5. Tory manifesto also said no Human Rights Convention withdrawal during next Parliament. So (iii) probably out.
  6. I think she is probably referring to “derogation”, which means suspending parts of the Convention in national emergency
  7. France did that after the recent Paris terror attacks. I think it is the most likely scenario.
  8. May and Nick Timothy have long said that major human rights reform can only happen if UK withdraws from Convention
  9. Derogation would be a half-way house. Manifesto is silent on it, sort of - the bit on human rights and soldiers is a hint at derogation
10. Here's some useful stuff on derogation (and according to @bbclaurak that's what Tories saying it is about) rightsinfo.org/turkey-derogates-european-convention-human-rights-following-recent-coup-attempt/
