Westministenders: Theresa's Common People

RedToothBrush · 18/05/2017 13:50

She came from Oxfordshire she had a thirst for knowledge
She studied geography at Saint Hugh's College
That's where politics
Caught her eye

She told them that her husband was loaded
The press barons said "In that case have a rum and coca-cola"
She said "Fine"
And in thirty seconds time she said

I want to look like common people
I want to do whatever common people do
I want to eat like common people
I want to sleep like common people
Like you

Well what else could Fiona and Nick do
They said "We'll see what we can do"

They took her to a supermarket
I don't know why
But they had to start it somewhere
So it started there
They said pretend you've got no money
She just laughed and said
"Oh you're so funny"
They smiled "Yeah”
Well we can't see anyone else smiling in here

Are you sure you want to live like common people
You want to see whatever common people see
You want to eat like common people
You want to sleep like common people
Like me

But she didn't understand
She just smiled and held Trump’s hand

Order that benefits get the chop
Tell them all to get a job
Promise to bring back the grammar school
Pretend you don’t think them a fool
But still you'll never get it right
'Cause when you're laid in bed at night
Watching the news talking about building the wall
All have to do is call your mates to fake it all

You'll never live like common people
You'll never do whatever common people do
You'll never fail like common people
You'll never watch your life slide out of view
Whilst you blame it all on the EU
Because that’s all you can do

Sing along with the common people
Sing along and it might just get Brexit through
Laugh along with the common people
Laugh about leaving the EU

It’s the most stupid thing that you will do
Because you think that it is cool
You’ll call them a ‘lying foreigner’
But don’t say we didn’t warn you
You’ll regret saying we are better off out
'Cause everybody hates a benefits tourist

It doesn’t matter if you can’t do the math
With all those pockets that you grease
You’ll win the vote in Bath

You will never understand
How it feels to live your life
With no meaning or control
And with nowhere left to go
You are amazed that they exist
And wish they were all white
So you tell ‘The Big Lie’

Get THE flat above THE shop
Cut your hair and get THE job
Trick some mugs and hire some fool
Pretend you are not really cruel
But still you'll never get it right
Instead you're plotting late at night
About which ‘cockroach’ will take the fall
All have to do is call your mates to fake it all
Yeah

You'll never live like common people
You'll never do what common people do
You'll never fail like common people
You'll never watch your life slide out of view
As we plan to leave the EU
Because there's nothing else left to do

But ‘moan’ about how we don’t want to leave the EU.

That Andrew Neil interview transcript is just painful. TM is hopeless.

I see FB is buzzing with news of Labour picking up in Wales ..

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/labour-poll-wales-general-election-2017-16-point-shift-swing-a7749786.html

woman12345 · 22/05/2017 21:22

Of course it could never happen again:

When Labour's victory was announced on 26 July 1945 (three weeks after polling day to enable those overseas in the forces to vote) it took the country, Attlee included, by surprise. With 48 per cent of the vote, Labour gained a Parliamentary majority of 146 seats, the largest in post-war British history.
The swing of 12 points to Labour was unprecedented
(and remains a record swing at post-war elections). The vote represented more a rejection of the Conservative Party than of Winston Churchill's performance as a war-leader. (Churchill was another astounded at the result).

Melassa · 22/05/2017 21:23

Goodness me! Deadwood Redwood in the Torygraph talking about "consequences" for businesses that speak out against Brexit.
How very dare he try to muzzle people who know what they're talking about. He really is a loathsome creature, I wonder what's in it for him?

ElenaGreco123 · 22/05/2017 21:53

May's interview with Andrew Neil is shocking.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/05/2017 22:37

Wales:
If the GE has same % as this recent Welsh poll, then Scully calculates Labour would win one seat from the Tories. No other seat change for any party

Interesting different perspective of the positive benefits of immigration Smile

Amazing the difference it makes not having a media dominated by the likes of Dacre and Murdoch screaming about refugees. cockroaches and swarms of immigrants Hmm

(Times Paywall) May under fire over U-turn

Quite blistering by the Times

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/fwd-p3h56x03c

"Mrs May insisted that “nothing has changed” Hmm at the launch of the Conservatives’ Welsh manifesto,
saying that the insertion of a pledge for “an absolute limit” left the bulk of the policy unchanged." Wink

< unlucky timing for her Welsh visit ! >

"Theresa May had hoped to use the event to shift the discussion back to Brexit, but hastily announced an addition to the social care policy

Theresa May was accused of being “weak and wobbly” today as she hastily changed her social care policy afterit bombed on the doorstep.

The prime minister pledged to cap costs four days after rejecting the option of limiting liabilities in favour of an alternative plan.

Mrs May’s retreat comes after several polls showed the Conservatives losing ground and days of negative coverage of a policy dubbed the “dementia tax”.

Last week Jeremy Hunt, the health secretary, said that a cap was not fair as it would result in people with multimillion-pound homes being subsidised by taxpayers who were struggling to get by.

< why I don't think it was a cunning plan ! >

"Mrs May denied that her announcement amounted to a U-turn, saying:
“Nothing has changed, nothing has changed”
as she faced taunts that her claim to be “strong and stable” had been exposed.

She ignored a question on whether she was in fact “weak and wobbly”.

A visibly rattled prime minister told reporters:
“We have not changed the principles of the policies we set out in our manifesto.
Those policies remain exactly the same."

"Sir Andrew Dilnot, author of the 2001 review that suggested a cap, told World At One on BBC Radio 4 :

“Only a few days ago the government was saying a cap was not a good idea.
I think they’ve now recognised it is a good idea and I think those who want to see a sensible system put in place simply need to keep the pressure up over the next few months so we do end up with a system that can work.”

BigChocFrenzy · 22/05/2017 23:00

pretty Your link was amazing - the positive benefits to Germany of mass immigration
No wonder I find it is much more cosmopolitan than on my previous jobs there:

"Around one in five people living in Germany now have a foreign-born parent or international background. Shock
During the same period, Germany’s unemployment rate has dropped from 10 per cent to just 4.2 per cent.
Furthermore, the German economy was the second-fastest growing economy of the G7 countries in 2016."

prettybird · 22/05/2017 23:06

Yup BigChoc - it certain doesn't for with the Shock & Fear attitude promulgated by the worst of our media in the UK Shock

Wonder why the findings of this research haven't particularly been publicised over year? Hmm Could it be, could it possibly be that it doesn't for with the "immigration is bad" and "we're overpopulated" mantra? Wink

prettybird · 22/05/2017 23:18

Motheroffourdragons - UKIP got 10% of the vote in the EU elections (with the usual crappy low turnout), versus 29% that the SNP got, (Lanour got 25% and the Conservatives 17%) hence the odious Coburn got in as the 6th MEP Sad

I've checked the 2014 results: UKIP got c140,000 too many versus the SNP's 389,500 - just short of being able to get their 3rd MEP. In 2009 it had been the LibDems who won the 6th seat.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/05/2017 23:22

pretty, mother I'd love to see Devo Max and a federal UK with reps from all 4 countries in an upper chamber replacing the HoL.
With proper respect shown to the 3 smaller countries, instead of the current arrogance or even antagonism.

I still think the economic consequences of Scotland splitting from the UK would be severe.
However, maybe no worse than Brexit. So, if Brexit sinks badly, I appreciate Scots may decide they might as well jump ship to EFTA

Westministenders: Theresa's Common People
BigChocFrenzy · 22/05/2017 23:43

Oho, Willie Rennie, LDem, found his bite in the Scottish leaders debate :

"“Ruth Davidson called Boris Johnson a liar on three occasions < she was right ! >
Now she’s standing with Theresa May arguing for a hard Brexit.
She’s talking about the opportunities that it presents for the country.
If Boris was lying then, does that mean Ruth is lying now?”^^ Hmm < oops ! >

BigChocFrenzy · 22/05/2017 23:52

Do read John Crace's take on the Maybot policy reboot Grin

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/may/22/maybot-policy-reboot-ends-in-an-embarrassing-interview-meltdown

"“Nothing has changed. Nothing has changed,” the Supreme Leader snarled, her eyes narrowing into a death stare, her face contorted and her arms spread wide, twitching manically. “Nothing has changed.”"

"She hadn’t made a U-turn because she was a strong and stable leader.
And even if she had, it would have been a strong and stable U-turn."

Cailleach1 · 23/05/2017 00:25

#WeakAndWobbly! I bet TM is cursing Crick. At last I have something to mutter to myself when I hear the darned strong and stable.

Well, you have to admit it was a day full of entertainment. Bet there is no shortage of Con ministers and MP's just keeping it under wraps until the election is over. Hunt and Green look like idiots as they do a volte face. I'd be surprised if Nick won't be the Con's red line and will be in line for the chop too, when the time is right. He wrote the Manifesto with another guy, didn't he? I don't know if Fifi was connected. May looked at Crick as if he were poison. She was practically jumping over the podium at one point. And. Did. A. Little. Of. This. Sort. Of. Thing.

They were going on about Labour's costings. At least they gave something people could argue with. They should have just written the funding will come from the same place as the Tories funding. From a strong economy. A car for everyone in the country. Funded by a future strong economy.

Gosh, the guy in the carpark who was arrested by the police for a breach of the peace. Around 4 police physically removing him from the area. Fair dues to Michael Crick to question it. The guy was demonstrating peacefully. I understand they have to be cautious re PM and their job is not to take any risks, but he didn't appear to be doing anything other than vocally protesting.

She kept trying to come back to Brexit in the AN interview. He didn't really let i take over. For once he asked some good questions. Imagine how she would have come across if interviewed by someone less sympathetic to her viewpoint. She couldn't answer anything. She also said in Wales that Corbyn had fake claims. But he hadn't. There is a U-turn on the cap. How dishonest do you have to be to be known as a liar? The U turn only happened because they sitting pretty in gov't yet. Saw Boris and all I could say is there is another dishonest Con. He had to leave jobs in the past because of lying. Remember once when ministers had to resign for lying being dishonest or doing dodgy things. "The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there".

Brexit as a type of reformation? Hope England doesn't try to pirate and plunder like during the last one. Visited the Golden Hind recently. During Elizabeth 1st, England robbed so many Spanish ships that the loot paid off the National debt. Of course, the Spanish ships were on their way back home with their own plunder.

Cailleach1 · 23/05/2017 00:36

pretty "I've checked the 2014 results: UKIP got c140,000 too many versus the SNP's 389,500 - just short of being able to get their 3rd MEP. In 2009 it had been the LibDems who won the 6th seat."

Well, that is interesting because the main number of MEP's on the Daily Politics etc. are Kippers. And the only one I remember seeing from Scotland is David Coburn. They are not trying very hard to have a balance are they?

BigChocFrenzy · 23/05/2017 01:40

A broken pledge by May or just another U-turn ?

In October, her minister for the constitution, Chris Skidmore, made a clear and unequivocal pledge to all UK citizens living abroad that they would be able to vote in the next GE:

“If you were born in the UK, or have been a citizen living in the UK, then by the next general election, you will have an inalienable right to decide your country’s future,”
