We keep getting told the Uk can get a deal like Canada, Turkey or other non-EU countries have, without FOM.
Those deals do not provide the same privileges as EU members:
They have quotas, restrictions and must obey EU regulations

e.g. After CETA, Ron Davidson, head of international trade for the Canadian Meat Council stated:
"We do not have what we would call commercially viable access to the European market".

The deal with Turkey abolished tariffs, but did not give free acess. This is what that means:

www.ft.com/content/b4458652-f42d-11e6-8758-6876151821a6

"On a recent Saturday at the Kapikule border crossing, about 30 minutes drive from the Turkish city of Edirne, a line of trucks 4km long stretched along the highway, inching along glacially towards the Bulgarian checkpoints.
"Today is a good day", said Ibrahim Kurtukcu, a 42-year trucker who had been waiting 14 hours.
"Last week the line was 7km long".
The record is 17km. It can take up to 30 hours to get through to the other side."

Of course, UK ports (and French ports) do not have the capacity, facilities, storage space or trained staff to handle customs processing of the vast amount of British exports & imports.

Building this additional capacity - where ? - would take several years and there are no signs that even the planning stage has started.

Id be surprised tbh

HashiAsLarry · 14/03/2017 18:09

IMF Oct 16 $65k per capita

Mistigri · 14/03/2017 18:09

RI GDP per capita is distorted by big companies using it as their base for tax purposes.

Eeeeeowwwfftz · 14/03/2017 18:13

From the Graun: Sources have claimed that May was always going to wait until the end of March to fire the Brexit starting gun, with plans to use the next two weeks building better consensus across the country and in different sectors.

Boules.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/03/2017 18:13

I'm aware big companies in RoI have sweetheart tax deals, but I didn't think it would make them well over 50% UK GDP per head.
Crikey

Damn you misti and your facts.
There goes the assertion I was about to make that given ROIs GDP per capita being more than twice Scotland's it proves whiskey should have an e in it Grin

Hang on eeeeee - does that mean she's finally realised 65m people aren't behind her and Brexit? Did it take NS to make her get that?

Mistigri · 14/03/2017 18:15

choc it's huge. A lot of it is aircraft leasing. It's not "real" production.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/03/2017 18:16

Of course, I still think of the RoI as it was when I was growing up, pre-EU, just big brother UK breathing down its neck.

I wonder if Scotland will get that kind of boost if it leaves the UK ? HmmGrin

I've worked for companies in UK who's international operations make money largely solely from 'repatriation of profits'. Looks like ROI have expanded that to countrywide.

Mistigri · 14/03/2017 18:20

Damn you misti and your facts.

Lol

Damn RTB and her thread where people can disagree and exchange facts and change their minds ;)

Mistigri · 14/03/2017 18:23

There is real, productive investment in ROI too, eg huge state of the art medical device factories (plonked bizarrely in the middle of nowhere - I once arranged to meet colleagues at one, and thought I'd get there by public transport - that was fun lol)

prettybird · 14/03/2017 18:23

So that's TM's plan. Grin

Attract lots of multi-national HQs through a low tax, low regulation regime (outwith pesky EU rules as the Apple case goes through the ECJ Wink) and voila, the average salary for the whole country goes up Hmm

Peregrina · 14/03/2017 18:31

There is a rumour going around on twitter that the Brexit Bill is defective, and will have to go through the HoP again. Apparently the other 27 have been told. This would explain why Theresa May didn't invoke Art.50 today.

I don't know any more yet - no doubt either news will become available or it will be a hoax.

I know, a lot of my family work in similar places. Their idea of a commute is a lot different to ours Grin

Sadly the average wage in ROI is lower than the UKs. Though thanks to Sterling dropping its getting closer to parity

Expenses scandal rumbling on, quite a bit of action on it today:

Peregrina · 14/03/2017 18:48

Hashi - that could be it. It looks very convincing.

Given Mayhem's cobbled together White Paper, which was hardly worthy of the name, it wouldn't surprise me if they got this one wrong too.

What a mess! Surely even the most ardent Brexitters can't be impressed by the amateurism on display currently?

lalalonglegs · 14/03/2017 18:48

So they had a bill that they kept to 130 words - not much longer than a couple of tweets in essence - and they may still have managed to get it wrong? I. AM. LOVING. IT.

lalalonglegs · 14/03/2017 18:55

I seem to remember Jolyon Maugham casting doubt on the bill's wording in his blog.

RedToothBrush · 14/03/2017 19:00

If its the issue that I've found being spoken about on twitter, then its been known about since the end of January.

Jolyon Maugham and David Allen Green both pointed it out within MINUTES of the wording of the Brexit Bill first being announced.

They stated that the bill gave power to notify of the decision made by parliament, but parliament had in effect not made that decision within law. The referendum itself was not a parliamentary decision, just an advisory referendum.

If this is indeed, what is happening, then it is all the proof you need that we'll get screwed in a deal with the EU. The mere fact that its taken this long to be dealt with, when it was being talked about on twitter what 6 or 7 weeks ago, says it all.

That and the proof of why Theresa May and No 10 really should get themselves with the programme and start using twitter....

I really hope this is indeed true. The fact that it was two lawyers who spotted it straight away does make me think that there is a fair chance it is. If for no other reason that it leaves the door open for a legal challenge even if that challenge proves to be unsuccessful. That and all the egg that would be left over lots of faces. It won't change anything in the long run I'm sure, but I'll gladly take anything that exposes the government as totally incompetent.

GreenPeppers · 14/03/2017 19:01

Hashi
now that IS good!!

I have to laugh at the issue.
Serioulsy, TM hadn't thought about that small issue of Parliament taking the decision (and the referendum being only advisory)??
And no one around her actually raised the issue either? No lawyer etc?

I'm starting to think she is doing it on purpose to postpone the triggering of Art50 for as long as possible without it looking like it's coming from her iyswim. It will only be all those pesky annoying people that want to do things by the book...

GreenPeppers · 14/03/2017 19:03

Why would she want to postpone triggering Art50 though?
Unless she is a Reaminer at heart (as per her position before the vote) and doesn't want to? Grin

HashiAsLarry · 14/03/2017 19:03

I suspect people have warned her. And she's pushed them aside. No naysayers will be tolerated in TMs world.
