Westministers: The Lords Strike Back

RedToothBrush · 01/03/2017 19:41

This needs no fanfare or lengthy post. Just this:

The Lords are demanding amendments unilateral protection for EU citizens.

Labour was split 358 for an amendment to 256 against.

This is after Amber Rudd had tried to reassure the Lords by writing a letter assuring peers that EU citizens would be treated with the utmost respect.

Utmost respect = an amendment to guarantee unilateral support.

Today is a good day. It should have been done in the first place.

.....And quite a significant number of that 52% would not vote leave in another ref...

People don't like being lied to...leavers or remainers

Just seems to me that leavers are happier to accept the very real economic and social pressures brexit will bring. Perhaps they are independently wealthy or elderly and not interested in studying, travelling or being able to work abroad?

Pretty much fucked it for those of us who do sadly

Am I Angry?

Yep. You have NO idea

Badders123 · 06/03/2017 18:43

TM was NOT elected by the electorate

I thought my point was fairly obvious?

May or leadsom....yeah, Hobson's choice for the PCP imo

HashiAsLarry · 06/03/2017 18:46

Seems the Turkish had us figured out though:
An Englishman will burn his bed to catch a flea
Seems a very good description of TM's brexit vision

Badders123 · 06/03/2017 18:48

That's a very good description of brexit!

BigChocFrenzy · 06/03/2017 18:49

LH was being ironic < maybe add "ironic" in parenthesis ? Grin>

I haven't seen anyone claiming the 52% are racist morons.
This is a common claim of victimhood that is just self-invented.

We've often said that Farage, Nuttall, Banks & co are racist. Because they are.
So are Trump and Le-Pen

"Demonising" the government ?
We have always been allowed to hammer any government who is making a cockup and / or whose policies we disagree with
e.g. the MN threads criticising cuts to benefits for the disabled and the poor, cuts to nhs care.

Why on earth shouldn't we criticise the govt on Brexit too, when we - and some prominent Leavers - think they are turning a challenging process into a disaster ?

There is nothing patriotic about keeping silent in the face of approaching disaster for the country

lalalonglegs · 06/03/2017 18:51

Theresa May was not elected by Conservative party members. She, in fact, was only elected by a few dozen Conservative MPs so her mandate is zero within the country.

And how dare those Indians speak disrespectfully about their colonial masters Hmm.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/03/2017 18:55

Longtime Leave campaigner Peter North: again

He's angry at how the govt are turning his Brexit dream into disaster, through their incompetence and party political dogma.
Brexit could have been so different, under a different govt

http://peterjnorth.blogspot.de/2017/03/yes-brexit-is-worth-hassle.html

"There comes a point where stupidity crosses the line into wickedness.

The steadfast refusal on the Tory right to confront the realities of Brexit is one of the most astonishingly dishonest deeds I have seen in my lifetime.

Through their respective propaganda vessels they have sought to promote the idea that Brexit can be quick and simple with no ramifications for trade and wider concerns.
This is when it becomes pure malice."

"The introduction of customs checks at Dover after Britain leaves the EU could bring gridlock to the south-east of England, with lorries queueing for up to 30 miles in Kent to get across the channel, senior figures in the transport industry have warned"

"This is a reality the Tory right have gone to extraordinary lengths to hide from and deny outright. Such is their hubris and obstinacy."

I found this article on data mining and immigration checks. Mainly the end of any shred of privacy.
The article is slagging Trump off, but it is really my darling Barack's legacy:

IMMIGRATION AND CUSTOMS ENFORCEMENT is deploying a new intelligence system called Investigative Case Management (ICM), created by Palantir Technologies, that will assist in President Donald Trump’s efforts to deport millions of immigrants from the United States.

In 2014, ICE awarded Palantir, the $20 billion data-mining firm founded by billionaire Trump advisor Peter Thiel, a $41 million contract to build and maintain ICM, according to government funding records. The system is scheduled to arrive at “final operating capacity” by September of this year. The documents identify Palantir’s ICM as “mission critical” to ICE, meaning that the agency will not be able to properly function without the program.

Slipperyknickers · 06/03/2017 19:05

No, how dare lurking husband trawl the Internet seeking racial slurs aimed at English people for no other reason than to further his political agenda of defaming the english.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/03/2017 19:05

The really knowledgeable (& honest) Leavers are shouting from the rooftops that the govt is totally cocking up Brexit

I think the reason some other Leavers are angry we won't stfu, is because they hate being faced with the probability that the Brexit they will receive is nothing like what they thought they would get when they voted.

Any rightwing Tories, especially well-off ones, are entitled to rejoice, because this looks like a very hard right Brexit that will totally transform the UK away from the post-WW2 consensus about the welfare state and the social contract.

Ditto those English nationalists who want a WTO Brexit, with no particular trade agreement with the EU.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/03/2017 19:07

Slippery I've posted how I was very frequently called "wog" and other racist slurs in the 1960s and 1970s.
It's hardly something I'm proud of, but it was a common slur against those of my mum's ethnicity.

Slipperyknickers · 06/03/2017 19:13

"Any rightwing Tories, especially well-off ones, are entitled to rejoice,"

Actually anyone who wants to are entitled to rejoice. Thank god you don't get to decide or we would all be extremely miserable.

We have absolutely no idea what will happen until negotiations are complete. There is no point being miserable about every possible negative consequence of brexit.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/03/2017 19:13

I think LH was showing how much anger at the Uk is ingrained in some former colonies - a reality check about how many commonwealth countries will not be feeling generous towards the UK when it comes to trade talks

They may pay off old scores - worst case is blocking agreement of UK quotas & tariffs in the WTO.

Slipperyknickers · 06/03/2017 19:16

"Any rightwing Tories, especially well-off ones, are entitled to rejoice, "

Quick all you right wing tories. Bigchoc has given you permission to rejoice.

Slipperyknickers · 06/03/2017 19:17

That's horrible bigchoc, but you were not called those things by me, and never would be.

HashiAsLarry · 06/03/2017 19:42

I think LH was showing how much anger at the Uk is ingrained in some former colonies - a reality check about how many commonwealth countries will not be feeling generous towards the UK when it comes to trade talks
Precisely. But we have script bingo again.

Slipperyknickers · 06/03/2017 19:48

That is of course possible.

I think they are more likely to behave in a way that is beneficial to them where possible. I would give them more credit for behaving responsibly than you appear to.

You appear to wish to deride and slag off the uk at any opportunity. Perhaps you have personal reasons for doing so, but don't expect me to join in with you.

Peregrina · 06/03/2017 19:54

I think they are more likely to behave in a way that is beneficial to them where possible. I would give them more credit for behaving responsibly than you appear to.

You make the assumption here that what is beneficial for them would also be beneficial for us. What is to say that it will be necessarily be the case?

Slipperyknickers · 06/03/2017 19:59

I think you are jumping the gun. We still have to negotiate with Europe yet...
There is no reason why there would be arrangements made which are of no benefit to us.

woman12345 · 06/03/2017 20:13

But we have script bingo again
Grin Hashi
Happened on US threads pre November 9th. Still that turned out well.Hmm

HashiAsLarry · 06/03/2017 20:16

There is no reason why there would be arrangements made which are of no benefit to us.
I don't know, there's a few fairly vocal Tories - JRM for one - who'd quite happily bring in measures that wouldn't help any average joes but benefit them greatly.

woman EEK!

Slipperyknickers · 06/03/2017 20:18

You all sound rather scripted to me too. Trotting out the same old bollocks again and again.
Empire, racist, alt-reich blah blah blah.... BINGO!!!

woman12345 · 06/03/2017 20:20

SF want referendum on united Ireland.

HashiAsLarry · 06/03/2017 20:20

Is there a giant irony emoticon?

woman12345 · 06/03/2017 20:25

Well there's some good spliff emojis on some other threads. Grin

DUP took a battering and calls for Foster to step down:
