Brexit

To wonder if there are any Leave voters who actually are having second thoughts about Brexit

Following Tony Blairs call for Remainers to convince Leavers to change their mind I'm wondering if there are actually any Leavers who are worried and might prefer us not to be going in the direction we are heading.

From what I've seen Leavers are more determined than ever and really don't seem in the slightest bit concerned about any negative repercussions so they're not going to be swayed.

Who is Blair aiming his comments at?

Aeroflotgirl, so you are happy for the current government to decide what leave means with no input from anyone? They could decide that leave means anything they like. In theory they could decide it means we cut all trade links but accept all migrants. You would have no control over this.

Doesn't sound very democratic to me.

No really, Cameron, Blair and Osborne are not in the same league as Trump and Putin and Le Pen. These people are open racists and misogynists. They have little regard for the law, for truth or human rights.

Never in the course of modern history has a turn to protectionism, chauvinism, isolationism and open disdain for the rule of law been a good idea. Never.

creampinkrose · 18/02/2017 10:25

Trump and Putin and Le Pen are also not British :)

Gove, Farage and Johnson were who largely led the 'leave' campaign.

Brokenbiscuit · 18/02/2017 10:26

Surely the vast majority of voting is driven by what serves the voter best?

Not necessarily. I'm probably best off under a Tory government because they look after people like me. I would never vote Tory though.

I'd readily vote for a credible opposition party that said it was going to tax people like me more in order to pay for better public services. Because I believe that's what we should do.

Gwenhwyfar · 18/02/2017 10:27

I know one Bregreter. I think many won't want to admit it, but also some have become even more hardened.

Bearbehind · 18/02/2017 10:31

Interesting comments. Shame we can't do an anonymous poll.

Seems Tony Blair has managed to achieve the opposite of his intention.

Broken, not wanting to put others out of work is a perfectly valid reason for not wanting to leave the EU. However, it only focuses on one set of people: others have had their jobs vanish or working conditions majorly compromised due to the influx of cheap and available labour from Eastern European countries and it isn't a selfish act to prioritise them in our votes either.

No, indeed, I haven't accused anyone of voting selfishly. However, I do think people were misguided if they voted to help the relatively unskilled workers who feel that they have lost out due to cheap EU labour, because I think that those people will lose out even more if our economy crashes post-Brexit.

The people who I will have to make redundant will at least have skills and savings to fall back on. Many won't. I fear for their futures.

20nil · 18/02/2017 10:36

So what if they're not British? They are all open supporters of Brexit. Scary stuff. Happy with Farage, Nuttell and Banks?

formerbabe · 18/02/2017 10:38

I voted to leave.

I think actually leaving is going to be a nightmare....I think we'll be economically fucked for a long time.

I don't regret voting to leave though. I still think it's preferable to staying in the EU.

Bearbehind · 18/02/2017 10:43

formerbabe what is so bad about being in the EU that you think being 'economically fucked for a long time' is preferable?

OP posts:
creampinkrose · 18/02/2017 10:44

And you don't need to tell me you're entitled to think that - but others are entitled to disagree.

jellyfrizz · 18/02/2017 10:45

It's already affecting lower paid workers as prices for necessities such as food and power have gone up leaving them worse off.

creampinkrose · 18/02/2017 10:46

So what if they're not british

Put simply, that I don't think people voted for Brexit because they supported them; they voted for Brexit because they wanted the UK to leave the EU.

Brokenbiscuit · 18/02/2017 10:47

It's already affecting lower paid workers as prices for necessities such as food and power have gone up leaving them worse off.

True, but I think the worst is yet to come. The higher prices are just the tip of the iceberg.

formerbabe · 18/02/2017 10:50

The prospect of an EU army.

More countries joining...Who are economically poor and will flood our labour market with more cheap labour and overload our public services.

I find the concept of freedom of movement for Europeans only fundamentally racist.

jellyfrizz · 18/02/2017 10:54

I find the concept of freedom of movement for Europeans only fundamentally racist.

How come?

Bearbehind · 18/02/2017 10:55

The prospect of an EU army.

That was never going to happen- we had a veto if it even got close

More countries joining...Who are economically poor and will flood our labour market with more cheap labour and overload our public services.

Like Turkey, who are miles away from achieving the requirements to join.

Why be concerned about cheap labour and overloaded public services when you've admitted we've fucked the economy by leaving?

I find the concept of freedom of movement for Europeans only fundamentally racist.

It's not racist- it's part of an agreement with the trade bloc we we part of.

creampinkrose · 18/02/2017 10:55

To be so rude as to answer on behalf of somebody else :) because it therefore limits the number of non EU members we can take, primarily those of an Asian or African background.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/02/2017 11:00

I'm a Leave voter, know lots of leave voters, and as far as I know no one has changed their minds.

It'll be interesting to see how Blair does on this.

formerbabe · 18/02/2017 11:00

Because many skilled, educated people from outside of the EU are prevented from coming here because we are full up with unskilled EU workers. It's ludicrous that we cannot control who enters our country and waiters, cleaners, shop assistants and other low paid workers can rock up with no checks...Simply due to the fact that they are European.

Question for those in favour of freedom of movement. Are you in favour of freedom of movement between the UK and non EU countries? If not, why not?

birdybirdywoofwoof · 18/02/2017 11:00

Do you disagree with all large trading blocs? Are African trading blocs racist too?

Brokenbiscuit · 18/02/2017 11:01

Sorry, but I find it laughable to suggest that people voted the EU so that we could accept more Asian and African immigrants.

I say this as the wife of an Asian immigrant, who has received more racist abuse in the months since the referendum than in the thirteen years that he lived here prior to the referendum. The racism that was unleashed and legitimized by the leave campaign sickens me to the very core.

And yes, I know that not all leave voters were racist. However, many of them were.

formerbabe · 18/02/2017 11:05

Many EU migrants hold disgusting views about non white people actually. Racism is Europe is far worse than the UK.

jellyfrizz · 18/02/2017 11:08

Who is preventing skilled educated people from outside the EU coming here? Net non-EU migration has always been higher than EU migration.

Facism and the far right in Europe is terrifying...I don't want to remain aligned to that.
