That's ok - as long as your girl crush isn't on Diane Abbott we won't ban you.

Inkanta, a couple of your girl crush's posts have been deleted Shock
Does anyone know why??

Inkanta · 09/02/2017 22:00

Yes I see, Confused

Her last post looked Okay. Said she was going back to lurking.

Pining Sad

WrongTrouser · 09/02/2017 22:06

Semi She posted insinuating (not very subtely) that various of us leave posters on the WM thread were shills (me, and others). I contacted MNHQ just to ask what their policy was on posters doing this and they deleted her posts.

She seemed to think that the fact I challenged her on it meant she was right - interesting logic Confused

LadyOhDearOhDear · 10/02/2017 10:36

I posted this on the other thread, but no-one seems to want to discuss it. ANyone have any interest on this thread?

Did anyone watch the BBC documentary last night (by Katya Adler) on the EU? I found it fascinating and scary at the same time. It does appear that the EU is teetering with Southern European countries drowning under debt and Northern European countries starting to reject the immigration policies of Merkel from 2014. I highly recommend it - it is a sobering programme that shows that this issue is way more complicated than the in/out lens we are now viewing it from. Her final comment was that we may not have an EU to exit in 2 years time as there are so many challenges ahead. I suspect that a large number of people voted out because they thought it better to walk away from this (despite the ramifications) rather than try and get reform which has not been forthcoming in the past.

The Dutch elections seem to be very important - a strong showing from Wilders might bolster support for other far right movements in France and Italy.

Also see this report from Chatham House re: opinions on immigration in Europe
www.chathamhouse.org/expert/comment/What-do-europeans-think-about-muslim-immigration

A situation becoming more complicated.

Re: banking sector, I found this report from the House of Lords committee looking at the EU/City interesting and I listened to some of the debate on the HoC channel yesterday (I must get out more). I think these reports are more informative than BBC soundbites. The summary at the beginning is worth reading.

DebbieDownersgiveitarest · 10/02/2017 10:55

Lady I did not see the program no, but I and many leavers are well aware of the precarious position the EU is in.

Its very complicated and very worrying. NOT ALL, but certainly some remainers we see posting on here however - do not seem aware of anything over and above their own personal situation which maybe living here as an EU national or living abroad and wondering what the future will hold.

I certainly feel leavers have been more outward looking and forward thinking, and also more selfless.

surferjet · 10/02/2017 10:59

Hi LadyOhDearOhDear
The other thread is very pro-remain, so any negative reporting of the EU is pretty much ignored. Thank you for the links,
will talk more later < at work >

Interesting Lady thanks

"London is currently ranked as the leading financial services centre in the world, closely followed by new York. Other European cities are far behind. There is a tension, in that unpicking a highly developed ecosystem such as exists in London or new York could have unpredictable effects. It would also be very difficult to replicate it, in the short term at least, in a less developed centre.

We were told that much of the business lost by the UK would be more likely to relocate to new York than to the EU.
The strength of the UK’s financial services industry, means that the UK has a large trade surplus in financial services with the EU. Though this demonstrates the extent to which the industry benefits from access to the EU market, it also demonstrates the reliance of the wider EU economy on the services provided in the UK. If the UK ecosystem cannot be replicated in the EU, which is not a
realistic prospect according to the evidence we heard, we conclude that it would not be in the EU’s economic interest for services to be provided less efficiently, or in new York instead of London.

I shouldnt worry lady

I have been ignored loads of times both on here and on the other thread which moves very fast

Try posting again, i didnt watch it myself Smile

Limer · 10/02/2017 11:28

I recorded that programme lady and hope to watch it later. Your summary echoes my main reason for voting Leave - the EU is already a busted flush, it'll either be abandoned wholesale by many other countries, or just disappear without trace as its influence wanes.

Merkel's days are numbered, and the rise of the far right throughout the EU continues unabated. I wanted to put more than "clear blue water" between the UK and the basketcase that the EU will degenerate into. Thank god Leave won.

howabout · 10/02/2017 12:06

Lady interesting to know the programme was worth the watch - will catch on iplayer later. Question for me would be why it has taken till now, rather than pre-Ref for the BBC to produce it.

boredofbrexit · 10/02/2017 12:07

howabout...maybe because its taken them this long to accept that we are leaving the EU?

howabout · 10/02/2017 12:08

I also get ignored or abused if I bother to interact with the Westminstenders these days.

boredofbrexit · 10/02/2017 12:26

yep, me too. They now suspect us of being Mrs Gove.Hmm

WrongTrouser · 10/02/2017 12:34

Thanks for the recommend and links Lady. I can't do iPlayer but will read the links.

There does seem to be an increasingly fine filter as to what gets acknowledged as worthy of discussion on the WM thread. Even Yougov polls are apparently not worth considering by some (not all) posters who seem to prefer to convince themselves and others that all leave voters want to round up all EU nationals and send them back - in the face of a lot of evidence that this is not the case. Odd. I don't know why anyone would prefer to believe the worst case scenario.

That said, I do still think it's worth posting on the WM threads. There are lots of lurkers who read but don't post much, some of whom may have been interested in the programme and links.

SemiPermanent · 10/02/2017 12:58

I'll watch that doc Lady, thanks.

YY to the only interaction on the WM threads being binary:
Ignored or admonished

I am actually encouraged that Inkanta has a crush on a Remainer - every little helps when bridging the great divide Grin

SemiPermanent · 10/02/2017 13:02

I didn't realise we were being accused of posting for payment! Shock
Is that an actual thing that I could sign up to?!
I'd totes do that as a job!

One thing she said was that as we had 'won', we should be celebrating - I won't feel we've won anything until article 50 is triggered tbh.
Every day seems to bring up another idea to twist away from accepting the vote.

surferjet · 10/02/2017 13:09

Agree - the champagne is definitely on ice until A50 is triggered. Too many influential traitors/ enemies of the people around.

WrongTrouser · 10/02/2017 13:14

I have been reading Dominic Cumming's blog looking back at the Vote Leave campaign. It's long and I haven't read it all yet but it is fascinating. It veers between interesting political analysis and gossipy office politics (he doesn't pull his punches).

The most interesting bit for me so far is some polling they did back from Sept 2015 through to just before the referendum. Instead of just asking "leave or remain", they asked people to put themselves in one of three groups. See table.

It's very clear that 1) the notion that no one was bothered about the EU until the Leave campaign started is nonsense and 2) there are only about 30% who actually want to be in the EU. Many of the other remain voters did so out of fear. Now that many of the seven plagues are not appearing, in the long run it looks like a large majority will in the end be happier out of the EUSmile
