Wrt the latest voting demographic thing, I agree with howabout - it's not about education level, it's the have/have nots.

The clusters of Remain were mostly the haves - earning a good wage, comfortably off, who by extension are more likely to have a degree - unaffected by 'the EU' other than for good things (work, travel etc).

The Leave, by contrast, were more often the have nots, who by extension are less likely to have a degree.

It's not 'have degree, therefore clever enough to vote remain'; it's 'I'm doing ok in life, will stick with status quo'.

Also - the younger demographic are more likely to still be reliant on parents more - be they at university or just starting out in the world of work.
Not as cynical or jaded as someone over 40.

SemiPermanent · 06/02/2017 20:26

Let's diverge as chums then! Smile

Badders123 · 06/02/2017 20:29

That's the best way to diverge....
👍

Badders123 · 06/02/2017 20:37

Hmmmm
No idea really re voting patterns
I'm working class and not degree educated and I voted remain
I get a bit pissed off by all this "liberal elite" stuff - I grew up in poverty and I was bright enough to go to uni but my parents could never have afforded the financial help I would have needed. So that was that.
I've done just about every job you could think of really....cleaning, care work, admin, bar work, waitressing, retail work...
People like privately educated Nigel fucking farage calling me "elitist" boils my piss 😡

But my area voted by a long way to leave
It's a county with little immigration and an elderly population
Dunno. Any say I was surprised though.

Badders123 · 06/02/2017 20:37

cant say...
Grr

Inkanta · 06/02/2017 21:12

'People like privately educated Nigel fucking farage calling me "elitist" boils my piss'

Yeah - fair dos Smile

Badders123 · 06/02/2017 21:43

😀

“Now, the dividing line is not between left and right but globalists and patriots,”

Marine Le Penn said this and I think there is some truth in it although she is the National Front Party and so I don't think I can associate with them! I am confused how we categorise politics these days. I used to think I was left leaning but then the left seem to have got hijacked by a shouty outraged bunch of lefties who irritate the hell out of me. I don't know where I am. Confused

Anyway bottoms up! Gin

Badders123 · 06/02/2017 22:03

Some of us "shouty outraged lefties" are quite nice though 🤔😂

surferjet · 06/02/2017 22:12

Leavers are pretty nice too actually 😊 - we're all just nice normal people who voted in a different way that's all, which is why this thread is great because we can disagree and get on each other's nerves, but still get together for a Wine

Cheers all!

Bored, I don't think we can walk away if negotiations are not going our way. I think it will take us two years to make sure all the laws we want to keep are enshrined in our statute book. And we will need to get some new systems in place, for immigration for e ample.
But once A50 is triggered ( tonight if possible) then we have 2 years. And the remoaners can say what they like. 24 months later we will be out.
I don't know why people moan about Theresa May I think she is doing a great job. I just wish she would call a general election as soon as A50 is triggered as I think she would increase her majority.
God only knows why they call the "Appeaser" . Some one said it and everyone else is just repeating it stupidly.

Tryingtosaveup · 06/02/2017 22:44

I'm degree educated ( Masters' degree) and voted leave.
I've lived with the Common Market, The EEC, the EC and the EU. That's why I voted leave.
Cheers 🍹

boredofbrexit · 06/02/2017 22:52

Trying theres still a way to go before its triggered - has to get through this 3 day session then third reading/committe, then lords, then made into an Act.

Some rules change in EU at end of March which would make it much more difficult for an exit I think, hence the timings.

she could have made it that a defeat was a vote of no confidence then she could have called a GE and won, which would have made the path to leaving clearer-but it would delay things then we'd have the issue of potential exit difficulties arising from EU changes.

I think she is doing a good job brexit-wise and despite the appeaser tag, nato have confirmed trump is on board. but as a long term leader im not sure.

boredofbrexit · 06/02/2017 22:53

im not uneducated or poor but i am old.Sad

surferjet · 06/02/2017 22:56

Most of us are in the middle.

It may be trite but it's worth repeating imo.

TheAugury · 07/02/2017 06:46

I think the Appeaser tag us just more of the faux liberal name calling. It's all very school playground.

SemiPermanent · 07/02/2017 07:14

I'm one of those annoying swing voters, I don't have a tribe.

Agree that Labour has been infected by shouty bubble dwellers though (by that I don't mean Remain voters, but the cosseted metropolitan tribe who love to virtue signal and get very cross when disagreed with - this just happens to include many Remainers!).

I actually quite like TM at the mo tbh - she has the toughest job a pm has had for years - I'm pleased it's her that's in charge during the Brexit years.

Badders123 · 07/02/2017 07:18

She won't last
She hasn't thatchers brains and she has pissed off too many colleagues
Her cosying up to trump made me nauseous

EnormousTiger · 07/02/2017 07:19

I am a Remainer and I think May is doing a good job too with it all. I am very pleased with her.

Corbyn is not like Blair's liberal rich elite (despite his being white, private school educated etc) but the Labour party is split in two.

I don't think the UK really goes in for the US labels like Patriot. It's not our way but I am sure we will manage the best Brexit we can and just get on with it.

I've lived with the Common Market, The EEC, the EC and the EU. That's why I voted stay. In fact I even remember TV cameras coming to my school just when we joined or just as my parents had the vote to leave in the early 70s to interview us. They only showed on the film girls making stupid comments about French toilets.

Badders123 · 07/02/2017 07:21

However, I do want to kiss John bercow full on the mouth 💋
Now...there's a sentence I never thought I'd write 😂

Badders123 · 07/02/2017 07:22

You do have to wonder what's going to happen to labour...I can't see them ever getting my vote again tbh...

time4chocolate · 07/02/2017 07:39

Badders Shock - that's my breakfast cancelled Wink

SemiPermanent · 07/02/2017 07:52

Bless John Bercow!

I'm not enamoured enough to snog him Shock but he's really embraced his role & has done heaps for the better trying to drag the HoC (kicking & screaming) into the 21st Century.

SemiPermanent · 07/02/2017 07:52

Or even the 20th century....
