CeciledeVolanges · 05/02/2017 09:12

Goodness, you need to change your thread descriptor, you do realise it reads "all welcome"?

CeciledeVolanges · 05/02/2017 09:13

And most facts aren't opinions dressed up - ever heard of a randomised controlled trial? Or a law of mathematics or physics?

boredofbrexit · 05/02/2017 09:14

I think the other thread is the modern equivalent of CB radio. So, they are internet truckers, all the same, all doing the same thing - passing snippets of information amongst themselves, as they sit in their isolation, king of their cabs. Meanwhile the rest of us go about our journeys without the need to call-out.

WrongTrouser · 05/02/2017 09:25

Cecile Yes there are those sort of scientific facts, but when discussing Brexit, we are mostly not talking about scientific facts, are we? We are mostly talking about predictions (many of which have already been proved wrong) and opinions dressed up as facts ("high immigration is good for the country").

WrongTrouser · 05/02/2017 09:28

Infinite Love your post at 8.52 - inspiringSmile

emotions, opinions and intuitive behaviour has led to the great leaps and advances for wo/mankind. That our very ability to leap into the unknown and try something new with belief and faith in ourselves is what makes us amazing and ultimately successful.

Hear hear Infinite Smile

Well yes, obviously.

But how did these great leaps in understanding & facts maths/physics etc come about?

By imagination and thinking the unthinkable; by not being happy in a static world that doesn't change or move forward; by taking leaps into the unknown.

Progress has never happened when someone stood still.

Do people carry out randomised control trials to prove something new?
Or do they carry them out ad Infinitum for no good reason?

Thank goodness that all the great scientists & innovators did not stand still - just parroting 'facts' that were already known.

At one point the heretics were those who didn't believe the earth was flat, who didn't believe that God created all.
The staid 'fact spouters' who were too fearful of progress tried to convince them they were wrong - to take comfort in the safety of their indisputable 'facts'.

'emotions, opinions and intuitive behaviour has led to the great leaps and advances for wo/mankind. That our very ability to leap into the unknown and try something new with belief and faith in ourselves is what makes us amazing and ultimately successful.'

YES - that is the very nature of what exiting the EU is all about, and I am very comfortable with it. It's a great opportunity and I have every faith in people and the possibilities.

Inspiring Grin

Awwww Lots of love for scientists, innovators and scholars.

I sincerely hope that it will all go as well as everyone here thinks

Enjoy your more peaceful pub

I admire your faith in the Brexit experiment. Have you read Elephants on Acid?

To go back to Infinite's post, I think the most dangerous thing is people who can't see that the opinions, predictions, theories, selective facts they are being fed are just this (like Guardian readers who believe the Guardian is some sort of intellectually challenging font of objective thought rather than a propaganda sheet like almost every other newspaper).

Bearbehind · 05/02/2017 10:29

It's better to look at opinion , predictions, theories, selective facts and make up your mind about them than close your eyes, stick your fingers in your ears and cross your fingers which is the strategy employed by far too many Leavers.

birdybirdywoofwoof · 05/02/2017 10:32

It was the profoundest thing I've read on here. She's like Brexit's Plato.

surferjet · 05/02/2017 10:33

Yes. They think because they're very intelligent that they must be right over absolutely everything - it's pure arrogance ( they have a lot in common with Donald Trump ) & if anyone dares to defy them they're stupid, naturally.
Lefties are just as capable of being brainwashed by guardian type propaganda as anyone, in fact, more so in my experience.

Feeling and sharing the love this morning Smile and yes Cecile I should have been a bit more clear that I wasn't talking about scientific and mathematical formulae and absolutes (though even those have been known to change), I kind of assumed that was given so I apologise for failing to be clear.

CeciledeVolanges · 05/02/2017 10:35

People carry out randomised controlled trials to prove something new. New drugs, new scientific concepts - that is the point of them.

SemiPermanent · 05/02/2017 10:40

Agree, I only wish some of the more hysterical Remainers could take your sage advice Bear.

howabout · 05/02/2017 11:30

The problem for the UK and the US appears to be that there is a division between those asking what happens if you give an elephant LSD and those more concerned with the inhabitants of Trainspotting and what happens when the heroin supply is contaminated with elephant tranquilliser.

CeciledeVolanges · 05/02/2017 11:36

Just so you are aware, "hysterical" is a pretty loaded term, as it stems from the Ancient Greek theory that mental illness was the result of a wondering womb, hence the stem "hyster-". See here: blogs.lse.ac.uk/brexit/2016/01/06/dont-know-where-the-women-are-why-the-eu-referendum-campaigns-havent-engaged-female-voters/

And here www.google.co.uk/amp/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/37359765?client=safari for why that might be a problem.

I'm just going to sit back and let the insults roll in now.

CdV you sound like you are familiar with the reaction to your yawn-some posts. Have fun.
