JamieXeed74 · 02/02/2017 20:03

Guess we dont like politicians who speak their mind. Back to the old style of politicians who never say what they mean, never keep their promises and stitch up deals in dark non-smoky rooms.

prettybird · 02/02/2017 20:05

For the record: I am one of those that had "skimmed read" the White Paper (all 77 pages of it lots of detail in there Hmm) immediately after it had been issued and posted my first impression.

I have now read it in detail those are a few hours of my life that I won't get back and not found anything to change my view about its lack of content and its plethora of "have its cake" aspirational-but-not-worked through statements. Lots of descriptions of processes and "we will make things as frictionless as possible" and a total lack of understanding about the dangers of non-tariff barriers.

I was particularly amused by the hypocrisy Clause 9.2, especially following all the clauses in Section 8 where it hoped to continue to operate as barrier free a market as possible.

I also read all 650 pages of the Scottish Government's White Paper (which, to remind the Brexit Arms pub goers, was published in advance of the Indyref so that voters could make an informed decision as to the shape of the future). One of the things that swung the Indyref was that Better Together disagreed with the claim that Scotland could remain in the EU and insisted that the only way that Scotland could guarantee remaining in the EU was if we voted No. That worked well Hmm

JamieXeed74 · 02/02/2017 20:12

prettybird, it would be nice to know what concrete details you actually think could have been in the white paper when absolutely nothing is certain because the only deal or plan that is possible is one that is negotiated after discussions with the EU has started. A white paper is pointless because everything in it is speculation. Same with the Scottish white paper, its not worth the paper its written on.

becausebecausebecause · 02/02/2017 20:14

I'm Scottish, voted YES at indyref but it was absolutely not based on anything to do with the EU and the same goes for many others. In fact, we're mystified as to why the SNP bang on about wanting to remain chained to a monolithic superstate yet scream to be set free of the rest of the UK.

SemiPermanent · 02/02/2017 20:15

On the Trump state visit ban - remember how 'the people spoke', waved placards & marched in protest...

Well, YouGov poll finds that:
36% think it should be cancelled
49% think it should go ahead
15% don't know

Agree with Jamie - what did you want to see in there?

It could never be anything other than a wish list.

I don't understand the drama tbh.

I claim a Scottish hat trick at the bar. I am a No / Brexit. (For a full house we need a No / Remain) Wine

The other lot were having a right go at Lexit earlier so purely for catharsis here is a bit of fellow No / Brexiter Tony Benn.

And just to prove I am not much of a fan of progressive liberal alliances here is a bit of vintage Dennis Skinner - now off to google his nickname for Tiny Tim.

And a segway back to TB on neoliberalism.

becausebecausebecause · 02/02/2017 21:15

Howabout if we vote again now though I'm a definite NO to indyref. More than happy to remain in the UK now that we have more control back.

howabout · 02/02/2017 21:18

Hi five because Smile

boredofbrexit · 02/02/2017 21:27

do you think many scots will think that because? (fellow scot (non resident))

becausebecausebecause · 02/02/2017 21:32

Many, many do bored and that's why the recent SNP survey showed the same which displeased them no end. All this talk of Indyref2 is bluster for now because if there was another vote soon, they'd lose again.

SemiPermanent · 02/02/2017 21:34

The Beast of Bolsover!
I ❤️ Dennis Skinner 😊😊

He had it totally nailed all those years ago - don't need to get in bed with the chattering classes & the liberals, wining & dining the London elite - get back to representing the working class.

Tony Benn is awesome too - "you can't defy the public forever"

boredofbrexit · 02/02/2017 21:48

Surely all the remainers chattering class will shift to the lib-non-dems and we'll see the rise of proper, hairy ass labour?

JamieXeed74 · 02/02/2017 21:51

Why would remainers shift to lib-non-dems, 25% of them rebelled against the whip telling them to oppose Brexit.

boredofbrexit · 02/02/2017 21:55

because apologies for the questions, I know we don't do interrogation here, but someone on another thread said scots will 'never vote for an english politician again' in response to my opinion that labour would rise again in scotland. Not sure she realises scottish labour is different and its politicians are usually scots...but do you see a possibility of a labour revival post brexit?

boredofbrexit · 02/02/2017 21:56

jamie...where else do they have to go?

boredofbrexit · 02/02/2017 21:57

and they abstained I think.

SemiPermanent · 02/02/2017 21:58

I would LOVE to see the return of proper Labour!

I also think TM might work out ok too though - I'm hopeful about her (she's got the most difficult time ahead as PM as anyone before her for years).

Oust all the champagne socialists to the Lib-non-Dems where they'll be like pigs in shit, moaning about all the horrid people who are not thinking how they've been told to think.

JamieXeed74 · 02/02/2017 22:08

boredofbrexit, they dont have anywhere to do because the whole of the UK have voted on it. The question now to be debated is what sort of country will we be outside of the EU.

becausebecausebecause · 02/02/2017 22:16

boredof I don't personally see a labour resurgence, I see the votes going Conservative now, such is the disgust of the working classes with labour/Corbyn. I could be wrong but my yardstick (mega scientific Grin ) is my parents and my social circle who were died in the wool labour voters that moved to SNP for Indyref then watched in dismay as, post NO vote, Sturgeon developed an amazing love affair with another jailor. Labour have I think only one MSP in the Scottish Parliament and the dissatisfaction with the ruling SNP is growing arms and legs. Ruth Davidson is garnering ever growing admiration for telling the truth and saying it as it is.

becausebecausebecause · 02/02/2017 22:17

And another nail in the coffin of big Gov/small country obsession is the Named Person legislation. Even when the Supreme court judged it unlawful, the SNP attitude to the verdict was to, well, spin fake news, saying it was a minor setback but that the policy was sound. Lies upon lies.
