Brexit

Westministenders: Johnson defends his President whilst we try to defend Britain

Theresa and Donald
Sitting in a tree
K-I-S-S-I-N-G
First come Brexit
Then comes the Ban
Then comes the
Removal of Human Rights
… Damn

(Shamelessly stolen from a protest sign)

A couple of weeks ago people were still asking why we were talking about Trump on a Brexit thread. I think the answer has made itself all together too apparent.

What is happening in the US is not going to stop. It’s not going to get any better any time soon. The situation is grave with suggestions there has been a coup. What happens next is not going to be pretty. American institutions are struggling. The rule of law has been undermined. We are not talking about a developing country. We are talking about the country which has stood for freedom and democracy.

Our leadership looks weak in the face of this. We look like we are not only appeasing but endorsing. For what? A trade deal that he could revoke in 30 days?

We have but one question. How many of our ‘British Values’ will have to be sacrifice for the special relationship?

Make no bones about this: Cosying up to Trump threatens our national security. It threatens our democracy. It ruins what little moral authority we have left. It threatens our ties with Europe who we DO still need to have a relationship even if we are outside the EU. This is not world leadership. This is appeasement. This is cowardly weak and downright desperate.

Let us also not forget ‘Good old Boris’ pretending to be Churchill and calling the EU Nazis and Hitler during the Referendum and on several occasions since. He has now had the bare faced audicity to stand in the House of Commons and call MPs out repeatedly for ‘trivalising the holocaust’ or for making comparisons with the 1930s when they saying they have been told this by survivors of the holocaust. It is SHAMEFUL. I also note how many times Johnson referred to Trump being democratically elected as if this makes all the difference and he can’t possibly be a dictator if elected.

Why do they want to use the parallel themselves and HATE it when its used for things they use? Fascists hate being pointed out as fascists.
What would happen if you put it to the public? You have a choice, The EU or Trump? What would they say. At its most basic this is what Brexit is now. You can not hide it or disguise it any longer.

Get used to this. Be prepared to protest, to keep challenging, to keep calling things as they are. Fatigue might set in, but we need to keep on. This is for the long haul.

Today the a50 Bill starts in parliament. It’s not looking good, as it looks like MPs will completely fail in their DUTY to hold the government to account and will not have the balls to add amendments to the bill.

If it passes without any, get worried. It is not just about the EU.

It never was.

I dare say Edward VIII and Mrs Simpson were jolly pleased to be invited to meet a certain German during the 1930s, but history hasn't been kind about their meeting, so let's not crow just yet about May and her early invitation.

Trump is such a loose cannon that who knows which countries security he threatens? His behind the throne family and advisers will look to their own interests and will ally with whoever helps them. So UK security could be compromised.

Oh yes. Much better. Can't wait for the NHS to start paying American prices for drugs (as threatened by Trump today), that'll be great. And American clinical trials regulations- brilliant! Now we can have randoms like this guy running trials! And patients will be allowed to pay for the privilege - yay!

We use American pricing for some of our trial drugs (supplied by the company so we don't pay!). Last one I priced up was £1000,000 per patient.

Hmm, going to stick my neck out and guess that trade deals with the US will involve the dismantling of NICE (or restructuring at the very least).

We're definitely much better off out if the EU and with the US. After all, it's only liberal elite lefty who gets who care about 'rule of law' and 'human rights' and 'employment rights' and affordable medical care. The sooner they all bugger off to Germany the quicker this country can realise its true destiny.*

*tax haven on steroids.

Did I miss any cliches there?

Peregrina, I've written to Nicola Blackwood twice. I had one totally standard response which didn't answer my points at all. I've had no response except an automated acknowledgement to the second.

I've been shouting at Gove too, amongst others. We need to respect the mandate apparently. Great, do you think if we held a referendum as to whether he should jump off a cliff he would respect the outcome regardless? And if he did do you think he would just jump? Or would he more likely ensure that if he jumped, there'd be a parachute/safety nets/paramedics waiting. This is what parliament need to be doings, getting all those things ready.

More from Skwakbox (usual caveats apply).

"UKIP leader Nigel Farage’s VIP ‘golden ticket’ invitation to the Presidential inauguration had been rescinded by Donald Trump shortly before the event. So it really does appear that Mr Farage was cold-shouldered by Trump as soon as his usefulness was over."

Farage Grin Deary me. Trump shouldn't have done that - it would have swelled his inauguration crowd by a percentage or two.

Two amusing posts in the last few minutes.

So that's why he went for the LBC job - after all that work on the campaign trail, his mate Dumpf just gives him a golden shower photo and then leaves him standing outside among the "little people"
< what a disappointment Grin >

Shows how fickle Trump is.
May should take note of this: all that hand-holding and grovelling, then she'll be left standing outside in the cold
With no mates left

Farage was never really his mate though was he? That gruesome posse flew to NYC and hung around like groupies. Flatter Trump and he'll play with you until he gets bored. As he will with the UK by, about, next Wednesday.

Misti the rumours about Macron may put a nail in his coffin.Le Pen had fallen away but Fillon is seen as the only one to beat her, as he is to the right as well, But now all these accusations have come out about the paying of his wife, he is unlikely to get anywhere, so Le Pen is fighting back.

That is the word on the street in Belgium anyway (Francophone area).

Now it's a pity in one way about Farage - if he'd made a success of himself in the US it might have encouraged Katie Hopkins to up sticks too. She was supposed to be on the first plane out, but unless I missed it, she hasn't been.

Grin Love the idea of Farage getting uninvited to the ball.

Agree that Trump is not believable as far as NATO and since that is all May came home with, she might as well not have bothered going.
We were just saying in the Dragon household on Saturday that this world is becoming more like the 1930s all over again. The last thing we need is Trump over here meeting the royal family and acting all superior, if he could get any more so.

And MMers keep whingeing about their MIL coming to stay ...

Christ I miss wet Tories. Despite never voting Conservative I now find myself nostalgic for the Major years when they were halfway sane. Kenneth Clarke is almost certainly responsible for this nostalgia.

Also did any of you read the article about events in the US being effectively a coup by Steve Bannon and the alt right. The anti-environmental focus does make me wonder if what's going on both here and in America is a drive by certain powers that be to protect hardcore capitalism/shareholder value from the inevitable decline that would accompany a more sustainable environmental policy. The left in both countries could and should have advanced a more sustainable agenda but are hindered by the impact of the financial crisis on living standards. This is particularly true in the UK where Labour have been blamed for the financial crisis.
