Westministenders: Johnson defends his President whilst we try to defend Britain

Theresa and Donald
Sitting in a tree
K-I-S-S-I-N-G
First come Brexit
Then comes the Ban
Then comes the
Removal of Human Rights
… Damn

(Shamelessly stolen from a protest sign)

A couple of weeks ago people were still asking why we were talking about Trump on a Brexit thread. I think the answer has made itself all together too apparent.

What is happening in the US is not going to stop. It’s not going to get any better any time soon. The situation is grave with suggestions there has been a coup. What happens next is not going to be pretty. American institutions are struggling. The rule of law has been undermined. We are not talking about a developing country. We are talking about the country which has stood for freedom and democracy.

Our leadership looks weak in the face of this. We look like we are not only appeasing but endorsing. For what? A trade deal that he could revoke in 30 days?

We have but one question. How many of our ‘British Values’ will have to be sacrifice for the special relationship?

Make no bones about this: Cosying up to Trump threatens our national security. It threatens our democracy. It ruins what little moral authority we have left. It threatens our ties with Europe who we DO still need to have a relationship even if we are outside the EU. This is not world leadership. This is appeasement. This is cowardly weak and downright desperate.

Let us also not forget ‘Good old Boris’ pretending to be Churchill and calling the EU Nazis and Hitler during the Referendum and on several occasions since. He has now had the bare faced audicity to stand in the House of Commons and call MPs out repeatedly for ‘trivalising the holocaust’ or for making comparisons with the 1930s when they saying they have been told this by survivors of the holocaust. It is SHAMEFUL. I also note how many times Johnson referred to Trump being democratically elected as if this makes all the difference and he can’t possibly be a dictator if elected.

Why do they want to use the parallel themselves and HATE it when its used for things they use? Fascists hate being pointed out as fascists.

What would happen if you put it to the public? You have a choice, The EU or Trump? What would they say. At its most basic this is what Brexit is now. You can not hide it or disguise it any longer.

Get used to this. Be prepared to protest, to keep challenging, to keep calling things as they are. Fatigue might set in, but we need to keep on. This is for the long haul.

Today the a50 Bill starts in parliament. It’s not looking good, as it looks like MPs will completely fail in their DUTY to hold the government to account and will not have the balls to add amendments to the bill.

If it passes without any, get worried. It is not just about the EU.

It never was.

Grumpy also were you aware the form is 80-odd pages long?

Itsautumn · 02/02/2017 15:29

I went to the V&A last week to see the Revolution exhibition. This Margaret Mead quote stood out:
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
Let's hope this still applies. I'll be there on the 25th March.

Peregrina · 02/02/2017 15:32

This time 12 months ago, or 18 months ago, Who here honestly cared about the EU.

So MN always had a section devoted to the EU did it? I have only been on MN for about 4 years now, but I am pretty sure that the answer to that is a resounding No, it didn't.

So don't try to kid me that people were all that bothered about the EU.

boredofbrexit · 02/02/2017 15:33

i thought starmer did well. he should leave to form a new party and start to provide a decent opposition.

Peregrina · 02/02/2017 15:35

Please don't whine either when May smashes the NHS. She promised yesterday that it wasn't for sale - so just wait to see how quickly she flogs it off. If it doesn't collapse when the EU staff go home and home grown applicants fail to take up places because they have scrapped the nursing bursaries, that is.

grumpypuss · 02/02/2017 15:38

The large institution DH work for have sent out an all staff email today saying that downsizing due to Brexit is inevitable.

They have a large proportion of people from the EU as their 'customer base' who as a result of Brexit will no longer be able to make use of this organisation's services.

It will however be mostly British people who will loose their jobs as result of this downsizing. Jobs that were until now considered safe and associated with great job satisfaction, not just for the elite but 'normal' people, support staff etc. Hurrah for Breit, eh?

From one of the links posted above

"Donald Trump reportedly planning executive order declaring pre-marital sex, same-sex marriage and abortion to be wrong"

Pre-marital sex is wrong? Who'd have thought? What might happen if one engages in such devious behaviour? Will one have to leave the country, too?

Hello everyone. Delurking to ask this.
So the official Labour position is to stay in the single market? Sorry I have not been around a while and it's hard to catch up. Just wanted to clarify Labour's and Corbyn's stance: we don't leave EU unless it's with access to the single market.?

Bearbehind · 02/02/2017 15:55

That can't be true grumpypuss

Can it........?

Cailleach1 · 02/02/2017 15:55

Well, the Dailies were trying to rile people up. All those damned European directives and regulations that curtail your life unbearably. You know the workers rights and the ilk. Of course, bendy bananas and recycling teabags were issues that curtailed everyone. You know when the EU brought in recycling regulations to give people reassurance about British meat again after the foot and mouth outbreak. Creeps. Nothing to do with how Bristol interpreted it either wrt teabags, of course.

Yes, the EU weighed heavily on many a bosom throughout the years.

Can you hear the clock going backwards?
What year at we now?
Every day of Trump we go back 4 years.

"It will however be mostly British people who will loose their jobs as result of this downsizing. Jobs that were until now considered safe and associated with great job satisfaction, not just for the elite but 'normal' people, support staff etc. "

Just to add that many of these people (support staff) who will loose their jobs are over fifty and have worked there for decades because the jobs were so great, decent pay, nice life-work balance. This will come as a huge shock to most of them and the likelihood that they will find a similar job are minimal. Unemployment will affect their mental health and sense of self worth, and cost the tax payer of course.

Please don't whine either when May smashes the NHS. She promised yesterday that it wasn't for sale - so just wait to see how quickly she flogs it off.

It's not up to her, it's up to Trump. I am willing to bet $$$ that a trade deal will see the NHS opened up to US companies.

grumpypuss · 02/02/2017 16:01

"That can't be true grumpypuss

Can it........?" Smile F* knows. But the thought of a rule against pre-marital sex (PMS for short) made me laugh. How might they supervise this?

Will women have to prove their virginity? Post Instagram pics of the bloodied bed sheet the morning after the Wedding night?

Kaija · 02/02/2017 16:01

Gives the crazed evangelical right the opportunity to believe that Trump has repented of all his sins of fornication. Grim times.

grumpypuss · 02/02/2017 16:02

Digital virginity protectors anyone?

Kaija · 02/02/2017 16:05

Yes. The chances of the NHS surviving Brexit were tiny, but any hope was lost after May's meeting with Trump, and her refusal to rule out excluding health services from a trade deal.

Cailleach1 · 02/02/2017 16:06

The hypocrisy. From a Pres. who thinks it it ok to grab someone's genital area. Never mind pre marital, extra marital sex. Making sleazy comments about women in general, even his own daughter.

On TV, I saw a banner on a pro life march in the US within the last week. One said they didn't need 'planned parenthood'.

www.plannedparenthood.org/about-us/who-we-are

"These health centers provide a wide range of safe, reliable health care — and the majority is preventive, primary care, which helps prevent unintended pregnancies through contraception, reduce the spread of sexually transmitted infections through testing and treatment, and screen for cervical and other cancers. Caring physicians, nurse practitioners, and other staff take time to talk with clients, encouraging them to ask questions in an environment that millions have grown to trust. - See more at: www.plannedparenthood.org/about-us/who-we-are#sthash.X5kJgXuw.dpuf "

So even contraception. It is unreal.

squishysquirmy · 02/02/2017 16:07

Kaija, the crazed evangelical right don't really believe that Trump is fully responsible for his sins of fornification. That responsibility lies with the wicked females, obviously.

Kaija · 02/02/2017 16:08

Ha - good point squishy.

Badders123 · 02/02/2017 16:08

I agree with semi (I know!!) Grin that there have always been Euro sceptics. It's not s new "thing"
I have no issue with them (even though I disagree)
What I take issue with is that incredibly complex issue of leaving the EU has been both put before the public because of PCP in fighting and hijacked by the far right - and leave voters MUST acknowledge this.
Bleating that they aren't racist - whilst sharing a platform with racists - rings very hollow.
I know that many many leave voters did so as a protest vote and I could almost understand that - if the future of our country wasn't at stake.
I note that the economic forecasts for 2017 have been revised upwards today - this should cheer me up - however I believe that it simply means the rich will get richer and the poor much poorer.
So, for a select few, the future is rosy
But For the rest of us?
I don't think all leave voters are evil idiots (ok, ok, some are - yes Nigel I'm looking at you!) but I do think most of them (who weren't eurosceptic prior to June 2016) were lied to and manipulated.
Their - understandable - anger is being directed st the wrong people
Get angry with those who lied to you....not those of us who predicted this clusterfuck

InformalRoman · 02/02/2017 16:08

RTB - they well and truly messed up that graph, didn't they?

No ... you won't get 14 weeks holiday in the sunny uplands of Brexit ...

Sorry - should have said including not excluding in last but one post.

Badders123 · 02/02/2017 16:11

The NHS won't survive
Nor will education
Soon we will paying ££££££ for private healthcare and buying our children's text books and having to equip dilapidated school classrooms
Don't say we didn't tell you so.....
