Often put things to the AIBU vote in our house but DH is somewhat outnumbered by me and the 3 daughters. Sad

DD1 has just worked out why PH is Neutral - she is the chemistry nut and is now waxing lyrical on the power of hydrogen. She is also our token US citizen so I have my fingers crossed her new President is not half as excitable as her.

I think I may be developing a celebrity crush on Neutral as I am minded to knit him a woolly hat for his next trip to Davos to compete with Kamil and his furry parker and Peston and his natty cap.

Still trying to calm down from Michael Moore trying to proclaim unilateral reinterpretation of US democracy last night. Shock

For anyone interested DH has informed me PH is only one factor and you also need to consider titratable acidity. Mountain Dew is worse for your teeth despite the fact that Coca cola is six times more acidic.

WrongTrouser · 21/01/2017 11:42

I don't want to restoke your anger how but are you talking about Moore's address to the inauguration protestors and his dodgy maths to say Trump doesn't have a mandate?

I'm starting to find all this playing fast and loose with democracy quite scary actually. I was trying to think when it started - is it just the EU referendum or has it happened before that people question a democratic vote?

WrongTrouser · 21/01/2017 11:48

or has it happened before that people question a democratic vote?

In western democracies I mean - obviously there have been plenty of coups, assassinations, dictatorships in other places - perhaps that's where we're heading. Is that what people want? I tried asking on another thread what people who aren't willing to accept democratic results they don't like want to put in the place of democracy, but no suggestions were forthcoming.

howabout · 21/01/2017 12:23

Yes that is what I am talking about wrong. I don't see a twee musical when I watch "Cabaret" but I fear some of the entertainment industry do. DD1 is studying the Weimar Republic atm - Moore seems to be advocating simple majority for the President with Executive power to overrule a deadlocked legislature. The parallels are uncomfortable and I am minded to say when I read all the hubris that history should be compulsory.

Sorry to bring my big dark cloud out to the pub and I assume your Q was rhetorical.

Now you can see why I spend so much time in my head designing bobble hats with rainbows and unicorns.

DebbieDownersGiveItARest · 21/01/2017 14:16

I must admit MM passed me by but having seen snap shots of his stuff I liked him. Then I saw him speak before US election and he claimed something along the lines of " The whole British people bitterly regret Brexit and wonder what the hell they have done" and I lost all respect for him.

I don't know whats happening to politics but did anyone see Emily Matlis on Newsnight last night - argument erupted between her and her guest.
Incredible irony here that the people who feel they are fighting for liberal freedoms in my mind seem to be the ones seeking to squash and remove said freedoms.

This removal of the right to vote if you are not deemed intelligent enough is a very real thing - and I fear when the regressive left eventually get back in power - they will protect themselves and remove the right to vote for some sections of society. We hear over and over again from supposedly liberal people " they were turkeys voting for xmas, they didnt know what they voted for etc " its been a huge prevalent reoccurring theme here and in US>

howabout · 21/01/2017 14:26

I have a lot of US contacts still and it is always striking how superficial the UK commentariat's understanding is. Fell asleep during Newsnight last night but there have been quite a lot of instances recently where the interviewer seems to be completely flummoxed by the answers given by their US guests - to the point of trying to tell them how they ought to have answered the question.

time4chocolate · 21/01/2017 16:02

I think it's been said on one of these threads before 'Democracy but only the right sort of Democracy' which at the moment is very true and quite Shock.

It is raising a lot of questions for me and certainly making me think where we are all going with this.

you can be sure there will be a belt and braces approach to ensure that these type of 'democratic' outcomes do not arise again.

Can I squeeze in - ah thanks. Sorry I might have missed it but would any of you do a trade deal with someone who said, 'ME FIRST'?

howabout · 21/01/2017 16:26

Best negotiations always happen when there is something in it for everyone, especially if both parties are upfront about what they want imho Smile

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 21/01/2017 16:32

No one is going to take the vote away from idiots, though they will probably think twice about calling referenda where one option is patently idiotic for a while!

Wishing idiots wouldn't vote idiotically =/= wishing to take their vote away.

WrongTrouser · 21/01/2017 17:00

and just to remind us that we're not imagining it...

If my world view led me to the conclusion that 37% of the electoral were idiots, that would indicate to me that I needed to reconsider my world view. Or perhaps I might just make bigoted comments on the internet, who know?

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 21/01/2017 17:08

If my world view led me to the conclusion that 37% of the electoral were idiots, that would indicate to me that I needed to reconsider my world view.

Some of them might just have voted idiotically. I don't really see why the fact that I think leave voters made a stupid choice would mean I needed to see the world differently.

howabout · 21/01/2017 17:24

Got my Remain voting DM round today. Neither of us thinks the other is an idiot. Both of us voted after due consideration and could see merit in both sides of the argument. Both of us are broadly happy with TM's approach. Both of us agree that calling the Ref weakened our position in the EU and going back on the Brexit result would be even worse.

WrongTrouser · 21/01/2017 18:29

Seek That doesn't surprise me.

2rebecca · 21/01/2017 19:29

Agree re people who think of themselves as liberal being very unliberal about stopping people with different views from voting or wanting the referendum rerun.
I feel similarly about all the Trump protest marches. I would never have voted for Trump and hate the way he treated Scots re his golf course near Stonehaven. He was democratically elected though. When Trump talked about appealing if Hillary won everyone said he should accept democracy. Fine demonstrate if he actually does something you disagree with but not just because he won

DebbieDownersGiveItARest · 21/01/2017 19:42

Saying people have made a stupid choice and saying they are too stupid to make a choice are different things.
