The point of that bit was "make friends with other people just like you who happen to live in other countries"

No 'politics of envy" or denigrating education - just pointing out that these people may feel smugly multicultural - but they're not. They are just meeting more people exactly like themselves.

Not making friends with people spanning generations, socioeconomic groups or education levels - but staying in their own bubble, albeit using different languages.

Perfectly 'at home' with people just like them throughout Europe, yet completely unaware of the people who are not just like them 30 mins down the road in Britain.

Kaija · 14/01/2017 10:55

" these people may feel smugly multicultural"

But who are "these people". How do you know they feel smugly multicultural? Do the EU midwives who delivered my babies feel smugly multicultural? Do my colleagues at work? My neighbours? I see no sign of it. They are just getting on with their lives like the rest of us.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 14/01/2017 10:59

The poor are poor because of government policy that attacks the most vulnerable in society. It's the filthy rich, the tax avoiders etc that cocoon themselves from societies problems. Most ordinary people are aware of the great injustices in this country. A social worker or nurse might live in a nice area and enjoy a holiday but it doesn't mean that they are blind to the family in poverty living ten minutes down the road.

Ironically it is the Brexit supporting gutter press that play the "feckless scrounger" narrative whilst ignoring the fact that domestic policy has got us to this point.

Yes, quite.

Ontopofthesunset · 14/01/2017 11:03

Why do you think they feel 'smugly' multicultural? It's normal for people to make friends with people they have things in common with. I see it with my children. It's normal to be friends with people that you, for example, went to school with, went to university with, worked with, have as neighbours. Many of these will be similar to you.

I'm a bit confused as to why national identity is actually such a good thing and why people feeling less British than you is a problem. I feel English, British and European; why is that harmful?

SemiPermanent · 14/01/2017 11:11

'These people' (as the article quite clearly states) are the British people who angrily shout that they 'don't feel British' they 'feel European' they are 'citizens of the world'.

The shouty ones who are tearfully painting the EU stars on their cheeks as they hoist their placards and march.
The shouty ones who have no clue whatsoever what it's like in towns across Britain, yet are citizens of Starbucks across the globe.

'These people' (as the article quite clearly states) are not your EU midwives or your EU colleagues, or the EU/non EU people who are living/working/settled in Britain - 'these people' (as the article quite clearly states) are the idiots who flounce around screeching about how they are not British, but citizens of everywhere because they are so terribly enlightened compared to a bricky from stoke-on-Trent who is quite happy being a bricky from stoke-on-Trent.

NotDavidTennant · 14/01/2017 11:11

Your non-prescription hipster spectacles and quirky denim dungarees might buy you immediate entry to the trendy coffee shops of Amsterdam or the bars of Barcelona, but they’ll get you nowhere in Stoke-on-Trent.

What a weird chip on their shoulder some people have.

Very bizarre. Doesn't sound at all like me or my family.

Hyperbolic guff. The bloke two doors down from me is a brickie. Mortgage, holidays, kids. Seems to be doing ok. He ain't no victim of the "EU superstate".

GhostofFrankGrimes · 14/01/2017 11:19

Posters complain about derogatory comments and then resort to cliches and name calling when their "argument" hits a brick wall.

SemiPermanent · 14/01/2017 11:20

Ghost:

Kaija · 14/01/2017 11:21

So, in other words "these people" are a caricature that you, or the author of the article, has just made up to express a loathing for freedom of movement.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 14/01/2017 11:22

and when you hit the brick wall revert to pictures/emojis.

Kaija · 14/01/2017 11:26

On the evidence of this thread it's starting to look as though we may be destroying our relationship with our largest trading partner because some people don't like hipsters.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 14/01/2017 11:30

If we are agreed the EU flag face painters and brick layers of Stoke are doing fine and that societal problems are the result of domestic policy then it takes us back to the question why are we leaving the EU?

SemiPermanent · 14/01/2017 11:31

Hmm That article was referring specifically to one attitude that came about after the ref.

Numerous reasons have been given for why people voted out - not one was "I don't like hipsters".

GhostofFrankGrimes · 14/01/2017 11:32

At least we've began to unravel the Brexit paradox Kaija Grin

SemiPermanent · 14/01/2017 11:32

Who said the bricklayers of Stoke weren't doing fine??!!

and yet rather than present these reasons articles full of cliches and hyperbole are provided instead.

Kaija · 14/01/2017 11:42

It's not even the worst reason I've heard for voting leave.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 14/01/2017 11:42

Perhaps you could address my question semi rather cliches such as enlightened vs unenlightened and er, hipsters in coffee shops.

SemiPermanent · 14/01/2017 11:44

Not addressing questions, no.
Not interested.
