Where's the landlady? Surfer?
We've been advised of a a lock in and it's reported that the jukebox has been stuck playing Pulp - Common People - all night.

Certainly is.

RedToothBrush · 18/11/2016 17:39

When I start to hear things like 'reclaiming the truth' I worry.

I know that the victors write and re-write history to suit and support their purposes - this is effectively propaganda. But to a lesser extent all reflections of history reflect the time they were write as much as they are about the period they were written about.

So what in our history is about to be re-written. Will it be all out propaganda or will it be merely a reflection of the era.

And with that in mind is there parts of history that have been assessed in a particular way during our life time that I should cling on to for dear life and ensure that my son knows rather than this new alternative?

Will such versions of history be deliberately discredited or even seen as dangerous things to possess as they a threat to the modern way of thinking?

BoredofBrexit · 18/11/2016 17:59

RTB, I think that is something that people have pondered down history. And with older children you find that they question the 'truth' of even the 'facts' that you put to them, as they hear and process through a different filter and seek their sources via a different medium. A situation that will only be magnified with the speed of news and the manner of SM today. And tomorrow?

So, now we're in a 'post-deceit age' (Nuttall)...

UKIP are the very epitome of deceitful. Only yesterday we saw the video of Nige saying that post-Brexit we'd still be in the single market, except when he was saying we wouldn't. We've seen UKIP mis-spending tens of thousands of pounds of EU money... and let's not forget that shameful and deceitful immigrant poster.
Frankly, it was difficult to get past Nuttall's first paragraph: ...political know-alls have been saying to each other across the dining tables of Islington. Could he be any more hackneyed?
Nuttall is a knob. If you think that's a 'good article', your standards must be pretty low. And anyone who thinks the Brexit vote was not, in many cases, based on emotional reasons, has obviously not seen

surferjet · 18/11/2016 18:10

So any vote that doesn't go your way was 'emotional' ( all leavers ) rather than well researched, educated votes? ( remainers )

I really don't like saying this but......

You lost. Get over it.

winterisnigh · 18/11/2016 18:22

Good evening y'all,

Its been busy in here Surfer. Cold night and I want a heart warming brew of something, is mulled wine allowed yet Grin Please don't give me the STARE Shock

but us Remainers don't tire of this - we love a good debate/really proper discussion

I agree, I think this was yet another issue with the EU all that talking trying to get 27 countries in line. We just dont have the time, we need - that is the UK needs to get out and get on now.
A brave new world awaits us out there, its time to stop jabbering on and time to start doing.

InformalRoman · 18/11/2016 18:24

Is that the same Paul Nuttalls of the UKIPs that is the brightest and best of Liverpool? Is he worried about the Bulgarians again?

TuckersBadLuck · 18/11/2016 18:26

Lance Armstrong, Maria Sharapova, Ben Johnson, Diego Maradona, Bill Clinton, Jeffrey Archer, Bernie Madoff, Charles Ponzi, Richard Nixon.

'Winners' all of them, at one time.

surferjet · 18/11/2016 18:30

TuckersBadLuck
I can honestly say, that's the strangest post I've ever seen on mumsnet.
Well done !

surferjet · 18/11/2016 18:31

And good evening to you too winterisnigh
Wine

TuckersBadLuck · 18/11/2016 18:37

They're all famous cheats and liars who did well out of it.

Do you really think that something that's 'won' by being better at telling outrageous lies than your opponent is a valid 'victory' and something to crow about?

BoredofBrexit · 18/11/2016 18:41

And playing in the jukebox 'I've got you, under my skin....'Grin

winterisnigh · 18/11/2016 18:45

Great, love a bit of Frank. Wine ( mulled and spicy)

Tryingtosaveup · 18/11/2016 19:03

Thought I'd call in on my way home.
Glad you got the fire going. And the picture on the dartboard changed. Love it. I'll definitely love trying to get a bulls eye on Tim Farron. He thinks we didn't really mean it and should keep voting til we get it right ! Prat!
Now, what's everyone drinking. Ooh, mulled wine for me too please. A large one.
I have the best reason ever for voting Leave, I want to leave the EU as quickly as possible.

surferjet · 18/11/2016 19:09

Comparing the democratic vote of 16 million people to Jeffrey Archer & Maradona is beyond bonkers.

squishysquirmy · 18/11/2016 19:13

From that article:
"know-alls" - is that the post truth word for experts?

winterisnigh · 18/11/2016 19:19

Post truth - is this the new phrase Grin.

TuckersBadLuck · 18/11/2016 19:21

Comparing the democratic vote of 16 million people to Jeffrey Archer & Maradona is beyond bonkers.

Clearly I wasn't, I was comparing the leave campaign's lies to the lies of the likes of Lance Armstrong, Maria Sharapova, Ben Johnson, Diego Maradona, Bill Clinton, Jeffrey Archer, etc.

Yay, go Ben Johnson, suck it up Carl Lewis.

You should be ashamed of yourself for reveling in a 'victory' brought about by outright lies and trickery. What does that say about your personality?

Have just read the Telegraph article - rather than reading it with preconceptions, I read it at face value as I try to do with most things.

I really don't see what has got people's knickers in a twist tbh.

His basic message is correct:
If this is the "post truth" era of politics, when the actual fuck was the "truth" period?
Perhaps I blinked & missed it?!

Also, this:

"..A giveaway to this is the phrase parties use when they lose an election. "We failed to get our message across to voterss^" they say, which translates as "obviously if the voters had heard what we had to say they would have seen how correct we were, and voted for us." They don’t entertain for one second that perhaps the electorate did hear them and just disagreed..."

Something that always bugs the hell out of me. 'The message not getting across'; 'work harder at getting the message across' etc - fuck the message, where's the action?

MangoMoon · 18/11/2016 19:32

You should be ashamed of yourself for reveling in a 'victory' brought about by outright lies and trickery. What does that say about your personality?

GrinGrinGrin
...that's a joke, right?!

What does it say about our personalities??

surferjet · 18/11/2016 19:35

trickery

😂😂😂😂

jaws5 · 18/11/2016 19:37

I'm worried if we've reached the point where Paul Nuttall is being taken seriously. Stuart Lee was so right....
