We are now in the throes of a right wing agenda willing to bring down the country for its own ideological beliefs. Bad things happen when good people do nothing. I for one will stand up so lest my children say I did nothing.

smallfox From that post I conclude that the British education system is to blame. That's really ignorant and therefore easily manipulated and dangerous!

larrygrylls · 15/10/2016 18:22

I think it is perfectly reasonable to peacefully protest and also test the legality of the decision. However, I suspect it will prove fruitless.

I also think that, although we will be financially worse off after the decision, the difference will not be vast. We may not get free trade for all goods but we will get far better than WTO terms.

And, as for bemoaning sterling's slide, it had delivered a financial stimulus to the economy when it was sorely needed. A large part of southern aeurope's economic woes stem from the fact that they entered the euro with their currencies vastly overvalued.

Bearbehind · 15/10/2016 18:24

larry the financial stimulus was only needed because of the result of the referendum Hmm

MagikarpetRide · 15/10/2016 18:24

In fairness it was only in one pile in I was referred to as half blood. Stuck with me though. Pretty sure JK Rowling would love people to be using her words as a form of abuse. Hmm

Sorry not sorry to posters like rorty. I won't suck up racism ever.

larrygrylls · 15/10/2016 18:27

Bear,

Regardless. I still don't understand why people think it is negative (unless it becomes precipitous). I am actually surprised we have not seen our European partners intervening and buying sterling to prevent unfair competition.

Bearbehind · 15/10/2016 18:29

You really don't understand why sterling being on its arse is negative when we are a net importer larry?

Peregrina · 15/10/2016 18:32

The country [Poland] that men gave their lives to fight for during WW2
The country that we went to war with Germany to protect, having not gone to the aid of Czechoslovakia - the far away country of which we knew little.

Having gone to war with Germany the Polish RAF squadrons were a key factor in our winning the war, as was the cracking of the Enigma codes by Polish mathematicians.

Until recently, we remembered our debt to them. Now suddenly, they are being treated as though they are unwanted vermin. It might be of course, because their reputation for being hard-working puts a lot of English citizens to shame.

Bearbehind · 15/10/2016 18:32

I think you've answered your own quandary there larry - we aren't posing a competitive threat because we don't have that much to offer.

smallfox2002 · 15/10/2016 18:33

Larry, I don't think there is that much that a lower sterling price would give us a competitive advantage over others.

Manufacturing has had a modest boost but they are not paying increased prices for factor inputs yet.

Inflation might choke domestic demand too!

larrygrylls · 15/10/2016 18:37

Bear,

We won't be for much longer, though. If you are a net importer you need a weaker currency to address this. Also our debt is reduced as (as far as I know) it is all sterling based.

Bearbehind · 15/10/2016 18:39

What do you mean 'we won't be for much longer'?

Do you think we'll become self sufficient?

larrygrylls · 15/10/2016 18:41

No Bear,

We will export more than we will import.

Peregrina · 15/10/2016 18:41

larry - what do you think we will export?

Bearbehind · 15/10/2016 18:43

How is that a good thing?

We haven't got much to export?

Where are we going to get the goods we currently import from?

fakenamefornow · 15/10/2016 18:47

Yes, what can I do? I've signed loads of petitions, I've written to my MP and joined Vote Leave Watch. I want my children to know that I did everything I could to prevent this and not fuck up their future.

Is there a 'keep freedom of movement ' petition anywhere? I can't find one. To the Leave voter up thread, sorry I can't click back to find out your name, I'll lose my post, you said for you this wasn't about immigration, maybe you could start a petition asking for this? I think it would look much better coming from a Leave voter and saying voting Leave wasn't about immigration, I remember Boris Johnson saying on the morning of 24th June that most Leave voters didn't want to end FOM.

larrygrylls · 15/10/2016 18:48

Bear,

This is where your argument enters the hysterical. We are not being boycotted or blockaded, you know. It is not a wartime situation. If a Mercedes becomes 30% more expensive people will either pay up or substitute a lower value car.

Meanwhile our export volume should go up over time and we will have to buy more domestically produced goods.

captainproton · 15/10/2016 18:49

With what's happened here (labour, libdems, tories all ignoring the concerns of the common man who feels out of place in a globalised world causing the rise of Joker Farage) and is happening in the US with Clinton v Trump (neither particularly trustworthy), I reckon it was just a matter of time before one country turned its back on the EU. I didn't vote either way, I'm not particularly surprised by the result, i suspect things will be tough for a couple of years but I think our economy is one of the largest and the fact we have good links with a lot of the world will mean we will cope better than say Greece or Ireland outside the EU. I suspect Germany would equally be as successful (if not more so) out of the EU.

I don't think it's the end of the world, obviously if you work in an industry which relies on the EU it's not very nice but I'm sure we'll all get through it somehow. We know the pain is coming so time for us all to get our finances sorted and batten down the hatches. You don't get that luxury in s financial crash.

I am severely disappointed that I look at all the 4 main parties and genuinely feel I wouldn't know who to vote for in an GE. Labour has turned into a joke. Too pro-Russia and seemingly anti-Semitic.

Bearbehind · 15/10/2016 18:51

I'm not being hysterical at all.

You said our exports will exceed our imports, I've asked you how?

Substituting a Mercedes for a lower value car doesn't mean it won't be imported.

We don't produce everything we import, hence our need to import it.

MagikarpetRide · 15/10/2016 18:53

I'm confused as to what we'll apparently be exporting too Confused

Peregrina · 15/10/2016 18:54

You said our exports will exceed our imports, I've asked you how?

And I asked you what? I am not sure that Andrea Leadsom's suggestion of exporting more jam is going to plug much of the trade gap.

ToujeoQueen · 15/10/2016 18:55

80% of our exports are 'services', the ones likely to leave the UK to keep access to the single market.

TheElementsSong · 15/10/2016 18:56

I was referred to as half blood

I got treated to a full-on psychoanalysis-style pile of pitying condescension regarding my cosmopolitan "rootlessness" and insufficient devotion to my shared British heritage (or something).

So when I replied explaining that I was of foreign origin, the poster then treated me to more pitying condescension in which she primarily assumed I therefore wasn't British.

MagikarpetRide · 15/10/2016 18:56

Don't forget all the coffee we export to Brazil too, which whilst true requires a very large amount of import first.

ToujeoQueen · 15/10/2016 18:56

Also, the UK runs at a trade deficit.

larrygrylls · 15/10/2016 19:01

Bear,

If you substitute a Mercedes for a lower value car, the value of your imports decline.
