Good News for Leavers

To balance up this forum somewhat I thought it would be nice to have a thread with something more positive for us Leavers.

I think the attached is excellent news and well done Theresa May. www.reuters.com/article/us-britain-eu-may-idUSKCN1120AK

It's pretty obvious to most Leavers that creating a new Government Department and putting the right people in place will take time and hopefully in 2017 we will see some move towards our aim.

I've never had a post deleted by MN for breaching talk guidelines but Surferjet's latest "clueless" post** is sorely tempting me to write something that might breach them. But I will resist - it's too much of an open target Grin

And BTW wrongtrousers - you conveniently ignore the "If" in my comment about Leave voters. Although there is one who is still demonstrating his/her ignorance (in the true sense of the word) Hmm

WrongTrouser · 30/08/2016 22:19

Nope, that's like saying, just because I say the world is flat and you disagree doesn't mean I'm wrong

I can't follow your logic there. I was talking about whether one thing proves the other. Me disagreeing with you whether the earth is flat neither proves nor disproves it. It either is flat or isn't.

Every single argument given by leave voters is fairly easy to dismiss, that's why the debate carries on so heavily.

Do you watch The Good Wife? There was a judge who used to make the attornies say "in my opinion" after every statement they made in court.

That is your opinion. My opinion is different. You think you opinion is correct. I think mine is.

Anyway it's late so goodnightSmile

smallfox2002 · 30/08/2016 22:23

If you don't get the point of that statement, there isn't any point explaining it.

I'll go back to everyone can have an opinion, but not all opinions have equal validity.

Bearbehind · 31/08/2016 07:39

however, some reports have suggested the Prime Minister, who has repeatedly pledged to make a “success” of Brexit, could push back the timetable because her new Brexit and International Trade departments are not yet ready to enter the formal negotiation process.

Fantastic news Hmm

It is good news not to have a General Election, given the current disarray in the country. Theresa May criticised Gordon Brown for not holding one when he took over, but missed a trick herself. She could easily have reminded everyone that the rules have changed since then and it's no longer possible for the PM to call snap elections.

surferjet · 31/08/2016 08:25

Is it ok if I turn this around?

What sort of Brexit would you like?

( sorry if you've already mentioned it but I don't follow all Brexit threads )

Bearbehind · 31/08/2016 08:30

Not sure who that question is too surfer but I'll answer anyway.

I want the softest possible Brexit, ie the one where pretty much nothing changes but TM gets to say 'it's Brexit' and it costs us a fortune for the privilege.

And I think that's what we'll get too so it will all have been a completely pointless waste of time and money.

Figmentofmyimagination · 31/08/2016 08:41

If there has to be a brexit, I'd like freedom of movement and access to the single market.

Some kind of emergency break on immigration (not unlike the one DC negotiated, now lost) is politically expedient but not something I would think of as a deal breaker. Much more important is to do domestic work, targeting investment at the areas most impacted by immigration and changing the national narrative so that voters understand the extent to which cuts and austerity measures have contributed to inequality, supporting effective sectoral collective bargaining structures and reintroducing sectoral wage councils, to try to address wage inequality, with greater support for trade union recognition, especially in the private sector, as a mechanism to improve the wages of the lowest paid, following some of the Northern European model.

I don't see any issue with being bound by rulings of the European court of justice. It would be a shame to lose our rebate but I would probably see that as the price we had to pay. I'd like to think we could negotiate a seat at the table to influence directives, especially those with a global impact, even if we were no longer one of the EU member states.

Peregrina · 31/08/2016 08:42

Agree more or less with Bearbehind. EEA type agreement, but I am not so confident it will happen.

For all her fine words on the steps of No 10, I am not holding my breathe to see her do something for those regions where heavy industry has gone.

Figmentofmyimagination · 31/08/2016 08:45

I am very relieved not to have a general election - this is certainly good news, as the conservatives do not deserve to be allowed to claim a national mandate for the mess they have created. Something else to thank nick clegg for.

If only we had an electable opposition.

missmoon · 31/08/2016 09:08

Corbyn will likely win the Labour leadership by a landslide. We don't want a general election now, even if one could be called (but, as has been pointed out, this is quite difficult due to fixed term parliaments act). The Tories would likely increase their majority substantially, with perhaps a slightly larger number of Lib Dems. A GE now would reduce the size of the opposition, but we need an opposition to scrutinise the Brexit negotiations.
