THE BREXIT FALLOUT CONTINUES - THREAD TEN

-----------------

This set of threads started out asking if Boris had been outmanoeuvred by Cameron handing him a poison chalice. Fate made it seem as if Boris lost the battle but May has confounded everyone and handed him a second chance. Or so it might seem.

May now has a new Cabinet after a sweeping cull of Cameron's lot. It is more right wing than in a generation. A number of appointments have raised eyebrows. There are plenty of poison chalices and plenty of Brexiteers. Will this create peace in the Tory ranks? Or is it just the calm before the storm

Labour are tearing themselves apart what now seems to be all out civil war. Talk of gerrymandering, violence, disenfranchisement, deselection and intimidation are rife. The seems to be no end in sight, and no prospect of a solution apparent. The question perhaps seems to be when and how, rather than if the party will split, and who will retain the name and party funds.

-----------------

So the sad face of British politics in the last two days can be summed up in a single image. Boris and a brick.

Depressed?

I think we have a while to go yet before we hit the bottom.

Excuse me with the intros as I'm starting to struggle to keep up with things myself

Thanks for this link, Red. I like that this movement would promote 'openness and tolerance'. Something we badly need, in view of the increase in hard-right attacks and beliefs:

"London Ukip councillor faces probe after suggesting campaigners trying to block Brexit should be killed"

He sounds vile

HesterThrale · 20/07/2016 13:24

Vile indeed. Exactly what I was saying about tolerance. And how can anyone in a position of power and influence think it's ok to talk about killing and bullets like this? He may say, "Anyone would tell you that I hold dear both respect and democracy, I would never seriously have advocated such violence," but unfortunately, as we surmise from recent events, there are people who take this kind of language seriously, and act on it with tragic and fatal consequences. This was an extremely unwise thing to say.

nauticant · 20/07/2016 13:25

In the aftermath of the murder of Jo Cox, that looks like inciting politically motivated murder. That would make it terrorism.

UKIP are very keen on law and order aren't they?

I saw this article earlier and ummed and arhhed about whether this belonged on this thread or not. In the end I think it does because the underlying reasons, are the same as the ones that drove much of the Leave vote and are issues that need to be addressed by this government.

I find it striking. And of course this is compounded by the lines of nationality and religion drawn by Brexit.

I'm glad to see a new liberal/pro eu movement emerging. What I hope to see tho, is a party or movement that is about young peoples interests unlike the two main parties now.

DoinItFine · 20/07/2016 14:37

Estonia is taking over our Presidency of the EU second half of next year.

Then everone else moves up by 6 months.

We are a little bit more gone.

BestIsWest · 20/07/2016 14:48

President of Labour? How would that work then?

RedToothBrush · 20/07/2016 14:54

Poll from April with current poll.

Just curious to ask, but how long does anyone think it will be before the Eurosceptics destroy TM as Prime Minister?

Unicornsarelovely · 20/07/2016 16:27

I note at PMQs Edward Leigh MP (a loony Tory) asked for TM's confirmation that she wouldn't go for s soft EEA option.

Six years maybe (serve art 50, negotiate a bit, GE)? It will depend how much of a threat labour are.

SwedishEdith · 20/07/2016 16:31

Poll is interesting. UKIP losing voters to Cons (for now!) and Lab losing voters to Lib Dems?

howabout · 20/07/2016 16:42

That was how I read the poll as well Swedish. Interesting the bleed to Lib / Dem is as low as it is. If Brexit starts to look like yesterday's issue then they could again end up chasing short term political gain at the cost of being on the wrong side of the future.

Also a lesson in there for the LP - it needs to look for its role in ensuring positive Brexit outcome for its Core and if it does so every chance of winning them back from UKIP. This seemed to be Cat Smith's position on the Daily Politics. I wish she was standing for the Leadership!

I assume TM and Boris / Amber are deliberately manufacturing the rows over immigration numbers and right to remain for EU nationals to make sure TM continues to look Eurosceptic enough for anyone who would oppose her from that side.

RedToothBrush · 20/07/2016 16:56

No. Con and Lab have lost support to Lib Dems. (Remainers)
UKIP must be going to Con and I guess also Lab somehow. (I guess Leavers going back to traditional parties?)

This is worth a read: a rather beautifully written and comprehensive assessment of where we are now from John Lanchester.

Peregrina · 20/07/2016 18:13

Well, well, May says that she won't start EU talks in 2016. This will surely upset the hard-brexitters who want talks NOW. [Sounds of stamping feet and red-faced rolling on floor tantrums.]

GingerIvy · 20/07/2016 18:14

Well, she did say she wasn't going for A50 until at least December. EU says no talks before A50. How is this news to the hard-brexitters?

OlennasWimple · 20/07/2016 18:17

I've just watched highlights of TM's first PMQs. Wow!! Sassy and engaging - where has the ice maiden gone?

Also interesting to see her flanked by Brokenshire and Hammond

GingerIvy · 20/07/2016 18:19

Unfortunately I missed it. Hopefully I can catch it this evening after dcs in bed.

GingerIvy · 20/07/2016 18:20

argh. Sorry. wretched laptop being difficult.

prettybird · 20/07/2016 18:27

Anyone who watched PMQs is tougher than me.

I turned over 3 times but every time I was disgusted by the infantile jeering and sneering. I just couldn't thole it and had to turn over to another station. Petty point scoring and nothing constructive achieved Sad

It's worse than a classroom of unruly, misbehaving kids Shock

nauticant · 20/07/2016 18:33

The public school-like jeering is a massive turn off. But I don't think the answer is for JC to read another letter from a Mrs Trellis of North Wales.

prettybird · 20/07/2016 18:42

I agree with that! Grin

And to be fair (Hmm) on the parliamentary parties, Westminster has been designed to be confrontational like that.

Some numpty in the past decided that that was a good thing Hmm
