THE BREXIT FALLOUT CONTINUES - THREAD TEN

-----------------

This set of threads started out asking if Boris had been outmanoeuvred by Cameron handing him a poison chalice. Fate made it seem as if Boris lost the battle but May has confounded everyone and handed him a second chance. Or so it might seem.

May now has a new Cabinet after a sweeping cull of Cameron's lot. It is more right wing than in a generation. A number of appointments have raised eyebrows. There are plenty of poison chalices and plenty of Brexiteers. Will this create peace in the Tory ranks? Or is it just the calm before the storm

Labour are tearing themselves apart what now seems to be all out civil war. Talk of gerrymandering, violence, disenfranchisement, deselection and intimidation are rife. The seems to be no end in sight, and no prospect of a solution apparent. The question perhaps seems to be when and how, rather than if the party will split, and who will retain the name and party funds.

-----------------

So the sad face of British politics in the last two days can be summed up in a single image. Boris and a brick.

Depressed?

I think we have a while to go yet before we hit the bottom.

Excuse me with the intros as I'm starting to struggle to keep up with things myself

I would have thought an ego was essential to being a leader - and I suspect Corbyn's ego is huge.

Oh, look what's that - is it a Gisela Stuart?

GingerIvy · 17/07/2016 11:32

Floisme I only mentioned his ego and not well liked from the perspective of whether or not the rest of party will support and work well with him. That's why I said there's a difference between "not well liked" and "unable to work with" IYSWIM. If he can do the job well, and the rest of the party is willing to support/work with him, then I don't give a stuff about his ego or whether they "like" him.

enochroot · 17/07/2016 11:34

Neither inspires me but if one of them doesn't drop out the vote will be split and we'll be back where we started.

"The problem is, as I understand it" re negotiating trade deals from Gisela Stuart. I think someone needs to email her these treads - all explained very clearly Gisela

TheBathroomSink · 17/07/2016 11:49

OS's big policy seems to be not leaving the EU, and having another referendum in 18 months' time.

He hasn't exactly specified what he'd do if the vote is still for leaving, which is slightly worrying!

He also wants to bring back the 50p rate of income tax and raise CGT to 20%, whilst spending £200bn on building stuff (he hasn't said what, yet)

And AE is a northern Labour woman.

TheBathroomSink · 17/07/2016 11:49

Swedish - she probably wouldn't read them, I don't think we've been very nice about her...

herecomesthsun · 17/07/2016 11:55

AE has a lot more experience.

OS has taken over the orange sofa!!!

I wonder how much it counts for

-who the party would vote for
-who the country would vote for

It would indeed be great to have a woman Labour leader (maybe AE should unpack that a bit).

I had the impression she was a bit uncomfortable this morning.

herecomesthsun · 17/07/2016 11:59

Did Robert Peston have a show this morning?

TheBathroomSink · 17/07/2016 12:03

nope, he must be on holiday.

howabout · 17/07/2016 12:05

If AE is going with the "I'm a woman" card then I think people may well be inclined to equate her with the WEP and dissection of their policies does not generally go that well in MN land.

Floisme · 17/07/2016 12:21

I realised what you meant GingerIvy and I was agreeing with you although it probably came across a bit spikier than I intended - sorry!

prettybird · 17/07/2016 12:21

Dh says that AE's argument about why people should note for her included that fact that her mother could sew Hmm

The really sad thing is that I can't tell if he's exaggerating or joking Sad

TheBathroomSink · 17/07/2016 12:35

MIght be a little of both, pretty, she's said several times that her mother was a seamstress. She was saying that she was able to go to universities and get opportunities in life because of a Labour government, and people like her need another Labour government so they can have opportunities too.

Which is good, but she didn't articulate any of the ways in which she might look to make that happen, whereas OS actually did, whatever you might think of them.

GingerIvy · 17/07/2016 12:37

Floisme No worries - I just wanted to be clear, as I don't think I worded it quite the way I meant to. Distracted today a bit.

Floisme · 17/07/2016 12:58

Me too, I'm just so cross at the moment. I'm Mrs Angry from Angrytown and it's not always constructive.

Breaking up is hard to do, unless you're in politics

For yizzer delectation Grin

So many great quotes for this thread in this David Mitchell article.

This might be my favourite:

The discredited New Labour crypto-Tory notion of spin, that dirty washing is best not done in public, and that compromises can reasonably be made in order to get into office, has been chucked through Angela Eagle’s window.

are they banking on everyone being so utterly pissed off with the whole voting thing that the turnout ends up being about 3% so the whole idea can get shoved back on a shelf for another decade?

or is that just wishful thinking?

Also, one of the paper reviewers on Sunday Politics said he thought TM would have to call a snap election in the autumn or let it go until 2020. Isabel Oakeshott thought spring would be ok. I think they should probably all get on with doing their jobs for a while, and give the 'running-for-stuff' a break, because the country's got bigger problems, personally.

prettybird · 17/07/2016 15:00

Davis: "We'll get a very, very, very large trade area, much, much bigger than the European Union. Probably 10 times the size, well I'm not going to set Liam targets, but a multiple of the size of the European Union. And the moment we leave, they'll all come in."

....to use a good Scottish expression, "Aye right Hmm" Wink in your dreams

DoinItFine · 17/07/2016 15:05

What does he even mean?

It sounds like a kid kicked out of a football match for being crap boasting of the more extensive football options elsewhere.

Today Marina Hyde claims that Davis thought (until May) that the UK could negotiate separate deals with EU countries.

Can this be right?

I presumed at the time that he was lying.

The idea that he might have been telling the truth is far more frightening.

Article here from Janice Turner on women and leadership: I found it both funny and truthful:
