THE BREXIT FALLOUT CONTINUES - THREAD NINE

The Tories have settled their scores and May is now PM.
Is it May's Day or May Day for the people?

After careful consideration I thought the best way to sum up the Labour Contest was in one simple picture. May Day, might also be appropriate here too.

Things are moving fast, so hold on tight for the Brexit Ride

Sense of humour compulsory. No experience necessary though

Owen Thingy, like angela Eagle, won't get elected as Labour leader. I wonder
if theywill, when Corbyn gets re-elected by the membership, get behind him or foment even more trouble.

Dead Ringers is gonna be hilarious this Friday. :o

Limited number of places in a Cabinet. Hope these new SoS positions don't mean a department like DfID is axed/demoted out of Cabinet

annandale · 13/07/2016 22:02

There can be a certain amount of toing and froing according to the average political biography, but it depends how much political capital you have, how much the new PM needs you compared to how much you need them, and yes, nobody likely to say 'ooh no thanks' to the FO.

TheBathroomSink · 13/07/2016 22:02

One of Mr Johnson's first tasks will be to attend a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels next week - the US Secretary of State John Kerry will be there too. - BBC Live blog

RedToothBrush · 13/07/2016 22:03

Oh God yeah.

May is playing a blinder in creating new cabinet positions. Corbyn must be shitting it. That's even more shadow roles he has to find MPs to fill

Is there a list of people Boris needs to apologise to? Do we need to start one?

OP posts:
annandale · 13/07/2016 22:07

Red -

  1. Obama
  2. Erdogan
  3. Every member of the UK
  4. Every member of the EU
  5. Cameron

That'll do for a bit.

Arborea · 13/07/2016 22:09

Bozo in FO might be a shrewd tactical move. Sounds like the Fox and Davies roles are nibbling away at the scope of what would otherwise have been the Foreign Secretary's remit, and yet because it has historically been regarded as one of the big jobs, Boris can't really turn it down. In turn, it sends a message that he's going to have to knuckle down to a serious role, and yet one where his past is going to continually catch up with him.

I think she might just have made him an offer he couldn't refuse...

TheBathroomSink · 13/07/2016 22:10

He should probably just issue a blanket apology now to everyone for everything, and maybe copy and paste it somewhere for safekeeping. He'll need it again before August.

Does anyone think Corbyn is in his office with McDonnell planning his shadow Cabinet? No, me neither. I bet Nicola Sturgeon's paying attention though.

Boris Johnson once compared Hillary Clinton to 'a sadistic nurse in a mental hospital'

Hilary
oh and Trump but that doesn't really count

The words in May's speech that scared me the most were about "giving [families] more control over [their] lives" Hmm

The rest of it consisted of pretty words that any politician would say; but that wee sentence goes back to the very essence of right wing conservatism.

....As "we" have given you "control", it's your fault if you can't cope.

Sad
RedToothBrush · 13/07/2016 22:13

He can't do HIGNFY if he's doing a real job.

The only way to really get rid of him long term is to give him a serious job and wait for him to either fail or get his act together

Has the official opposition ever been less of a consideration for a new PM than today?

His first words as Foreign Secretary - asked if has to apologise to Obama - he says UK will be "at front of queue"

oh lord...

Indeed. This is a serious job.

Felascloak · 13/07/2016 22:19

HA! I know we've had loads of threads but does anyone remember Boris' speech and I said he was backing May?
Proved right !!! I love it when that happens.
Shame though I am scared of boris as foreign secretary Shock

PattyPenguin · 13/07/2016 22:20

*prettybird" I reckon by 'giving families more control' she means 'making families pay more for'.

If you can't afford to pay, tough.

SwedishEdith · 13/07/2016 22:22

Agree prettybird. But, but, but, she may have been seizing on that vacuous "take back control" nonsense as well. (Maybe? Hmm )

Cabinet might be a survival strategy. Give right foreign policy so they can foam on about Europe, but put centrists in charge of domestic.

Sturgeon will be paying close attention Smile

Her negotiating power (as I mentioned towards the end of the last thread) is her ability to block/delay legislation. So many of the devolved powers of the Scottish Parliament are entwined with EU law that unless she agrees Sewel motions remitting them back to Westminster, then the Scottish Government could be a real pain in the backside.

Alternatively, May repeals the Scotland Act and then definitely sets in motion the break up of the UK.

Are the Conservatives ready for another referendum gamble? They won the last on in Scotland in large part due to a promise that it was the only way that Scotland could stay in the EU Hmm ....can't use that one again Wink
