THE BREXIT FALLOUT CONTINUES - THREAD NINE

The Tories have settled their scores and May is now PM.
Is it May's Day or May Day for the people?

After careful consideration I thought the best way to sum up the Labour Contest was in one simple picture. May Day, might also be appropriate here too.

Things are moving fast, so hold on tight for the Brexit Ride

Thebathroom didn't you know it's all a conspiracy? It usually takes the ardent Corbynites two sentences before the 'c' word comes out

MerryMarigold · 14/07/2016 13:35

Grin at on glue!

Chalalala · 14/07/2016 13:37

I think there may be a large silent group of Labour members who voted for JC because they liked his style and his politics, but are now seriously fed up with all the drama and may vote against him just so that the party can move on.

My non-representative sample of Facebook friends would seem to support the above, but then it's a non-representative sample so what do I know.

Is this that far from the truth about Boris?

It's not a conspiracy. The labour party have acted appallingly in a very public manner! I really don't like Angela Eagle, she comes across as a hardened cynic with massive political ambition for herself. I'm so gutted at the Labour party, really I am. I'm one of those voters who was more Labour than anything else, and I would have loved to see them rally around JC and get themselves into power, but I will go green or lib dem depending whose manifesto I prefer.

Showmethewaytogohome · 14/07/2016 13:41

Merry - that was based on TUC support which has massively decreased. They are members who have votes and won't be happy about the idea of the party being split

BTW I am an 'ordinary' person. Yes I know loads of pro Corbynites on FB. But they are not party members and they also don't reflect the electorate either.

This shows how his ratings are falling amongst members. With a unifying candidate against him and protracted negative few months ahead the only way is south I think. The key is in the candidate

Back in May 72% of Labour members thought Corbyn was doing well, 27% badly; 60% wanted him to lead the party into the next election. Now 51% think he’s doing well, 48% badly and only 41% thought he should lead the party into the next election. However, for Labour MPs seeking to unseat him, their success of any leadership election is still questionable. 50% of members say they would probably still vote for Corbyn in a leadership election, 47% that they would probably not, and even that 47% relies upon finding a candidate who all those members unhappy with him could unite behind. Asked how they would vote in head-to-head contests between Corbyn and some potential challengers Corbyn still wins: he is ahead of Tom Watson by 50% to 39%, Angela Eagle by 50% to 40%, Dan Jarvis by 52% to 35% UKPolling Report

JamieVardysParty · 14/07/2016 13:41

My social media has just been a complete echo chamber of pro-JC. The impression I get is that people like him because he is different, anti-Establishment and because the Mainstream Media hate him therefore he must be a good person.

Amongst people I know from university or professionally, there is a lot of virtue signalling around JC, whereas in the working-class area I grew up which was very staunch Labour, people don't really get him.

PattyPenguin · 14/07/2016 13:41

Merry Labour haemorrhaged votes in the post-industrial areas in the Welsh Assembly elections this year.

I know that sometimes people vote differently in local and regional elections than in General Elections, but then look how many votes went from Labour to UKIP in the Assembly elections, and then what the results in roughly the same areas were in the Referendum - it suggests a sustained shift.

squoosh · 14/07/2016 13:42

Grin at Boris looking for Rhodesia!

Showmethewaytogohome · 14/07/2016 13:42

Merry that conspiracy post was not aimed at you - but at the poll being questioned by JC supporters

MerryMarigold · 14/07/2016 13:42

I agree Chala, but they have shot themselves in the foot. The drama was not created by him. There are a huge number of labour voters who are not members.

May beats Corbyn even when you exclude Conservative voters.
Theresa May has what it takes to be PM:
Agree: 55%
Disagree: 27%
Jeremy Corbyn:
Agree: 23%
Disagree: 68%

I still don't get how JC is anti-establishment, having been part of it himself since the 80s

MerryMarigold · 14/07/2016 13:44

Showme, I know, but was painting all 'corbynites' with the same brush. Maybe I'm not one of those but I like him and if he goes, so will I.

situatedknowledge · 14/07/2016 13:44

Miles behind everyone else, but just gobsmacked at the Louise Mensch tweet! WTF is going on in her head!

TheBathroomSink · 14/07/2016 13:44

BBC news speculating Villiers was offered International Development. I'd forgotten about that job!

TheBathroomSink · 14/07/2016 13:45

Crabb has resigned.

MerryMarigold · 14/07/2016 13:46

He's as anti establishment as you can get in that position. For a start he does not cave into the power of personality. He is not a career politician by which I mean he will not sell his soul for his career. I think he has acted impeccably in all this mess.

derxa · 14/07/2016 13:46

Crabb out! good!

flippinada · 14/07/2016 13:46

Merry people may well like JC (a lot of my friends seem keen on him) but if they don't have a vote in the Labour Party leadership election they don't get a say in whether he stays or not.

I think the bottom line is most Labour Party supporters (I'm deliberately saying supporters rather than members) would prefer to make some compromises and have a party that's electable rather than one which is ideologically perfect.

More sexting stuff to come out??

Definitely!

I'd half hoped International Development might be folded into one of the new depts, or even back into the FCO. There are going to be so many ministers with overseas responsibilities, it could all get a bit territorial
