THE BREXIT FALLOUT CONTINUES - THREAD NINE

The Tories have settled their scores and May is now PM.
Is it May's Day or May Day for the people?

After careful consideration I thought the best way to sum up the Labour Contest was in one simple picture. May Day, might also be appropriate here too.

----------------

Things are moving fast, so hold on tight for the Brexit Ride

Sense of humour compulsory. No experience necessary though

I am hoping she has given BJ a very important job to which he is entirely unsuited, he messes up by insulting someone/a whole country and she gets a reason to demote him. For ever. Insread of not giving him a job and being the naughty boy from th back benches. I'm pretty sure politics is just a great big game for BJ with little grasp of the effects decisions can have on people's lives.

TheBathroomSink · 14/07/2016 08:09

BJ isn't doing Brexit, he's doing the fun 'bigging up Britain' stuff while Davis and Fox (aka the grownups) deal with the details. He gets his ability to promise shiny gold unicorns to the UK public limited by the amount of time he has to spend on planes and in interminable meetings with his civil servants.
Davis and Fox have the hard work to do, sorting out the details of Brexit and trade outside the EU post Brexit. These are poisoned chalices without a doubt.
Davis has been clear what he wants, and he is poster boy for the Tory shires, so if he can't get it, no one can, and it dilutes the Ukip threat.
Fox will be too busy setting up our glorious new trading partnerships Leave were so convinced would be ready and waiting for us to carp from the sidelines that he would have done a better job of everything.

On JRM, he keeps coming up because Louise Mensch is on a campaign to get him a job. he's not doing very well, she only switched to JRM when she found out Osborne had been sacked. She wanted him for FS very badly.

Fun and games starts back up around 10.30.

Unicornsarelovely · 14/07/2016 08:15

What about JRM going to the whips office?! In the spirit of inclusivity of course.

I see in the guardian this morning Suzanne Moore has deserted Corbyn now. It's another example of how the mainstream media are deliberately trying to ruin him and the G is the worst of the lot.

TheBathroomSink · 14/07/2016 08:19

Yes, I am hoping that TM has given BJ a big job that comes with a lot of support in the expectation that he will find a way to fail so big that she can't be expected to keep him on, and that also forces him to wind his neck in from the back benches.

I don't think she's going to launch us in to a50 immediately. She said in her campaign that she favoured January 2017 as the earliest point to trigger it, by which time Davis/Fox have had five months to plan and get their ducks in a row.

I am glad to hear that Corbyn has spoken to May. I cannot seriously imagine he thinks a GE is a good idea now. If he does, then I can only ask what the hell is he thinking?

Tom Watson got friendly with Max Mosley during phone hacking. He has donated before but never such a large amount. Apparently it was for office running costs - has one of the unions pulled funding from TW maybe?

DoinItFine · 14/07/2016 08:20

Hammond backs melty-voice Carney:

*Chancellor Hammond backs Mark Carney

Britain’s new finance minister has given the Bank of England a vote of confidence, as it prepares to possibly cut interest rates.

Philip Hammond has told the BBC that Mark Carney is doing an “excellent job”, and revealed he’ll be meeting the governor this morning.

He also warned that the UK economy is already suffering from Brexit uncertainty.*

From the guardian.

I hope that puts an end to the UKIP-lite wing of the Tories trying to politicise the work of technocrats.

TheBathroomSink · 14/07/2016 08:24

Unicorns someone suggested JRM for leader of the House (Grayling's old job) which would seem to be his sort of thing. I don't know about the whip. I suspect that job requires a lot of flexibiity.

Show - It is appalling that you cannot get a response from Momentum about your safety. You shouldn't even need to, though, should you? It should not be a concern that you have a different opinion, because you are allowed to!

Thegirlinthefireplace · 14/07/2016 08:25

Am relieved to learn Davis is pro common market. I read something pre referendum of him saying we should avoid Norway type deal. God he changed his stance, that makes me feel a bit reassured.

Single market I meant of course. I'm not on form today

RedToothBrush · 14/07/2016 08:28

Morning! First off the block a Labour donor is looking at a legal challenge to Corbyn on the ballot.

Reading the thread I have realised what job JRM got. With Boris and David Davis gone HIGNFY needs a new Tory. Who would be better and funnier?

I miss our George though. Surely he knows where the bodies are buried?!

kesstrel · 14/07/2016 08:32

This article contains an interesting description of a local Labour CLP meeting:

"I am, in my day job, a sociologist of religion. I have never experienced an atmosphere like that Party meeting anywhere before outside of conservative religious groups who are deeply convinced of the truth of their way of seeing the world. "

TheNorthRemembers · 14/07/2016 08:33

What's the chance of Liam Fox not cocking up though? He sounded thoroughly unprofessional the last time he resigned.

TheBathroomSink · 14/07/2016 08:36

GO not only knows where the bodies are buried, he buried them! I agree with whoever mentioned his loyalty, it was refreshing as it happens so rarely, but I'm not sad to see the back of him.

I wonder if he will stand down at the next election? If so, surely a swanky Chairmanship awaits in the city.

TheBathroomSink · 14/07/2016 08:40

Hammond has confirmed no emergency punishment budget. Will hold off until Autumn statement as usual (BBC Breakfast) He did indeed also confirm that he was happy with Mark Carney.

Liam Fox will definitely cock up, it's what he does.

You have to wonder at what point the Speaker of the House decides that Labour are too much of a basket case to carry on as Opposition. The bar appears to be extremely low.

TheNorthRemembers · 14/07/2016 08:41

Didn't Osborne mastermind the last two elections? I am too confused this morning.

Hammond also tells @BBCRadio4 City has to be in Single Market - that implies EEA strategy for May administration

Some reaction from Hammond's Today interview.

TheBathroomSink · 14/07/2016 08:50

TheNorth - yes (although depending on your opinion of Osborne, mastermind might be considered too strong a word...)

DoinItFine · 14/07/2016 08:56

We find out at noon if interests rates are to be cut to .25.

Economists split. Pound up against dollar, which might indicate expectations they will be held ag .5.

I find myself reassured by a new, proper PM and some adults appointments to important positions.

It feels like we are moving out of the political wilderness we've been in since June 24.

At least in this one party state the one party seems to be competent, if nothing else.

All of us interested in social justice have been disenfranchised. I have supported Labour movements and parties for my whole life. Now even I think the best party to lead us are the Tories.

TheBathroomSink · 14/07/2016 09:02

DoinIt - that's kind of the problem, isn't it? We have to accept that the Tories are the best party to lead at the moment because they are the only ones (in Westminster, I accept the SNP just carried on as normal!) to have stopped chasing their tails and started running the country. We're fucked, because if our Opposition party don't start to give a damn about the whole of the electorate and not just the little bit that goes to hashtag rallies, TM will be able to do whatever the hell she wants. And that can't be good.

TheBathroomSink · 14/07/2016 09:03

oooh. Energy questions in the House at 9.30, Amber Rudd hasn't yet been replaced, this apparently leaves Loathsome to give answers!!

I just wanted to add my thanks for the thread. I takes it all my time usually to catch up let alone post.

As another very unhappy Labour voter I have just read this article about a four point checklist for a new Labour leader which makes some very interesting points.
