THE BREXIT FALLOUT CONTINUES - THREAD NINE

The Tories have settled their scores and May is now PM.
Is it May's Day or May Day for the people?

After careful consideration I thought the best way to sum up the Labour Contest was in one simple picture. May Day, might also be appropriate here too.

----------------

Things are moving fast, so hold on tight for the Brexit Ride

Sense of humour compulsory. No experience necessary though

It's not if its a screw up, its when its a screw up - so let the brexitteers take us out of Europe. It's what they wanted. It's what the country wanted.

Thegirlinthefireplace · 14/07/2016 07:10

It's not what "the country" wanted, it's what a tiny minority of voters wanted. And while leaving is a screw up, the manner of leaving can enormously vary the outcomes. It's too important to use as bit of political manouvering.

Helmetbymidnight · 14/07/2016 07:12

it's what a tiny minority of voters wanted.

That IS rubbish.

Who would you have do brexit then?

Thegirlinthefireplace · 14/07/2016 07:17

Ha ha sorry used word minority when I meant majority. Typing too quickly!

Floisme · 14/07/2016 07:17

Showme I've probably already said this but it might have been on another thread. Anyway apologies if I'm repeating myself but the more I hear about Momentum, the more they sound like Militant Tendency rebranded. The secrecy, the attitudes to women, the unconcern for general elections all bear their trademark. And it explains the cult like devotion to Corbyn despite the fact that he's patently not doing his job. If it is them, they'll be highly organised.

HesterThrale · 14/07/2016 07:19

Boris isn't exactly 'doing Brexit'. I only hope there's method in what she's done. Boris trying to build good relations with US, Russia and the Middle East? Hmmm...

Thegirlinthefireplace · 14/07/2016 07:19

And re your second point, i haven't commented on who was chosen, I commented on people gleefully excited about the people who have been chosen fucking it up.

Thegirlinthefireplace · 14/07/2016 07:22

hester, you don't think the Foriegn Secretary will be involved in Brexit?

Well, he kind of IS doing brexit. He has to be friends with all the nations we're going to be begging for trade deals.

I think what Theresa May has done is v. logical - satisfies the brexiters - and in a resigned kind of way, the remainers.

Boris is an appalling man though. It reminds me of...what was that quote...the Nazi said..If you're going to lie, lie big. Well, he gets the rewards of Foreign office for having a career full of lies.

HesterThrale · 14/07/2016 07:25

What I posted earlier about UK being a laughing stock:
www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/jul/14/maybe-the-brits-are-just-having-us-on-the-world-reacts-to-boris-johnson-as-foreign-minister

HesterThrale · 14/07/2016 07:27

Yes sorry I suppose you're right. Boris will have to pave our way in the world post-Brexit. Baffling choice.

TheNorthRemembers · 14/07/2016 07:28

Someone mentioned Jacob Rees-Mogg last night. Did he get a post? Sorry I had to go to bed.

TheNorthRemembers · 14/07/2016 07:29

Theresa wants Boris on the frontbench so that she can see him. Same as with naughty boys in class.

Thegirlinthefireplace · 14/07/2016 07:30

More appointments later today northeast but don't think he got anything last night

Thegirlinthefireplace · 14/07/2016 07:31

Sorry thenorth, not northeast.

CaveMum · 14/07/2016 07:37

Surely Boris' appointment is a case of keep your friends close and your enemies closer?!

OppositeOfGenius · 14/07/2016 07:39

I know we don't want to go back and forward on that one first issue (and it's what keeps these threads sane I guess) - but it IS still contentious in how small a majority are carrying this forward. Our union wouldn't have voted to strike on that small a majority.

And the leave campaign did a lot of lying and emotional blackmailing - people are allowed to continue being pissed off about all that. Just because it's been a few weeks doesn't stop that from being the case!

Thank you for these threads everyone. I'd rather hoped Boris Johnson's smug face would have been bloody slapped off by now but foreign secretary Shock

Thegirlinthefireplace · 14/07/2016 07:43

It is contentious but the winners are driving the bus and writing the history books now and the people who should be making that point are having a scrap so I'm afraid that point will get buried deeper as time moves in.

Chalalala · 14/07/2016 07:49

Not sure why posters are so thrilled at the prospect of Boris et al fucking up Brexit.

My perspective is that the Brexit voters will not get the unicorns they voted for, because there are no unicorns for sale.

So when the government comes back with a unicorns-free deal that doesn't satisfy anyone, it will need to have been negotiated by Brexiteers. So that the Leave voters and Brexit fanatics realise that it was not a stitch-up, but genuinely the best deal that was available.

sorenofthejnaii · 14/07/2016 07:50

Grin

Give the naughty boy a responsible job and all that rather than have him throwing things from the back seats.

He won't be on HIGNFY nor doing his column because he is the Foreign Secretary.

HesterThrale · 14/07/2016 07:50

Yes I've thought it odd since Day 1, (DC's resignation speech), how quickly and easily the Tory Remainers gave in; no questions about all the doubts.

wooflesgoestotown · 14/07/2016 07:51

I wonder if BJ appointment actually makes UK less of a laughing stock.

Prior to this it might have looked as if Brexit was just a big political game among the boys, with him as a major player. With him sloped off washing his hands of it all that impression is magnified.

Him now taken seriously as a figure involved (but not too much!) in dealing with the implementation makes it look less like a big game.

Maybe?!!

Unicornsarelovely · 14/07/2016 07:53

I'm an avid remainer. I do think TM has done the only thing she could to get through 4 years without a UKIP rebellion and to try and head off that particular brand of horror.

Apparently BJ wasn't too bad at the trade and diplomacy stuff as mayor, it stops him carping noisily from the sidelines and bizarre as it may sound, prince Andrew is a real asset for trade with particular countries, BJ may be able to follow in his footsteps. They also have a superb civil service machine...

David Davis I don't like but think he has marked himself out as a principled man with his views on civil liberties etc. I hear he's also well respected by the right wingers who aren't totally insane. He's also keen on the single market which atm is an overwhelming plus.

Hopefully she'll have slightly leftish people in the domestic jobs today!

sorenofthejnaii · 14/07/2016 08:00

You can talk the talk about being fair for all - that's easy. But who you appoint and their actions speak louder.

I do wonder if her words will come back to haunt her.
