THE BREXIT FALLOUT CONTINUES - THREAD NINE

The Tories have settled their scores and May is now PM.
Is it May's Day or May Day for the people?

After careful consideration I thought the best way to sum up the Labour Contest was in one simple picture. May Day, might also be appropriate here too.

----------------

Things are moving fast, so hold on tight for the Brexit Ride

Sense of humour compulsory. No experience necessary though

The American's have literally just laughed at the FS appointment.

....As "we" have given you "control", it's your fault if you can't cope.

Totally agree with you Pretty, it is doublespeak. They've been using this jund of language for a while like "incentivising people to work" aka cutting out of work benefits to the bone.

But as Swedish Edith said, it also plays to the Brexit rhetoric. Win win for them.

UnGoogleable · 13/07/2016 22:53

When Boris pulled out of the leadership race so abruptly, I thought it smacked of a backroom deal.

Is this the carrot he was offered? Back out, let Theresa win and we'll give you a top job?

The silver lining to all this is Osbourne's sacking resignation. I am delighted. Although, I have to conceded that as much as I despise the little toad, he has been unfailingly loyal to Cameron. When all of his mates were scrabbling around saving their own skins, he was conspicuously absent. Again, another deal will have been done - keep quiet, accept you're out, and there's a nice Chief Exec's job waiting for you....

Is it shallow to comment on Sam Cam's dress here? She looked utterly fabulous today.

venusinscorpio · 13/07/2016 22:53

kind, not jund!

thecatfromjapan · 13/07/2016 22:54

OK. I really hope you guys don't mind, but I have to say this. It's not humorous but if I don't say it, I might explode - and this is a safe place to say it.

So, how has it come to this? We are living through a despicable, utterly shabby time in politics:

We are watching a future leader of Labour get elected on the back of violence against women. Stuff all this 'plausible deniability' nonsense. Momentum's leadership are accountable to Corbyn - even if he's distanced himself from them, circuitously, like some mazy, off-shore tax evading accounting system. They're his team.

And stuff all this weak 'condemning of this behaviour'. We know that's not a condemnation. This is what it is: it's an excuse to those who desperately, desperately want to believe, who want to be lied to, to ignore what is really, actually going on. It gives them just enough to put their hands over their eyes, their fingers in their ears and cravenly claim to 'not realise what is going on'.

That is not acceptable. It's not acceptable on the part of Corbyn. It is not acceptable on the part of his - adult - supporters. You cannot be allowed to lie to yourself that this is not happening. It;s disgraceful.

It's beyond disgusting. We've seen many of the completely insalubrious elements of 'Leave' - from the nasty wing - perform this manouevre, and we have been disgusted with it. We have found it abhorrent to see xenophobia and racism used and unleashed. We've been appalled at people willingly accepting the half-hearted untruths that 'such and such a thing wasn't intended that way' or 'is nothing to do with me'. We've been shamed that people have willingly accepted any weak opportunity to close their ears and eyes.

What an absolute betrayal to see the Left perform the same, shabby, manouevre.

I can already hear the minimisers and apologists on Twitter. And beyond that, the utter silence of those willing to accept the limp distancing of Corbyn as enough to permit them the excuse of ignoring this - because they are just so desperate to believe that this is the hope of the LEft.

It isn't. Future Emma Goldbergs won't be dancing in this Left dawn - they'll be being harrassed.

Corbyn's campaign is going to be won on the back of violence against women. How on earth have we become so desensitised, in such a short space of time, to such an appalling state of affairs? What on earth has happened?

RedToothBrush · 13/07/2016 22:54

He's petty. Give him a petty role to keep him busy.

thecatfromjapan · 13/07/2016 22:56

Seriously, you remember the Mumsnet campaign: 'We believe you'? Well, a bloody load of Corbyn supporters really do not believe this. Sad Angry

DollyTwat · 13/07/2016 22:58

Thank you for this thread, it's saving my sanity

I hate them all
I want it to stop

Rees-Mogg has a brother doesn't he? One who's more credible than him?

I'm so hoping that the BJ appointment was evil genius. I have to believe it or I might cry

Cat, I am totally with you. The only glimmer of hope is Nottingham police taking it seriously as hate crime now.

It needs to be dealt with. Corbyn is actively using tactics to intimidate, that much is obvious. It makes you wonder whether he was like this to PLP members directly...

McDonnell is a total piece of shit. But I knew that from the moment, Corbyn became leader. He is not surprising me in the slightest. Unfortunately.

I'll admit this information came from my dad. I was expressing surprised horror when he said he thought Moggy would be good as PM, so we googled and there do appear to be two. Or he looks different in the pictures and my dad really does like the bafoon (very possible)

LineyReborn · 13/07/2016 23:05

thecatfromjapan I hear you, loud and clear.

Thanks for the new thread. this metro article has made me laugh today.

There is a second Moggy. Writes for the Times if I'm not mistaken.

On reflection, diabolically clever Halo

TM has dealt with the poisoned chalice of Brexit in absolutely the best possible way:
appointing Brexiters in every relevant post, to sort out the fine mess they landed the country in.

  • She had to be seen to doing all she could. Otherwise, the 52%, the Tory right and UKIP would savage her. Even Farage seems soothed atm.
  • The Brexiters will receive almost all the blame if the resulting deal is bad. No relevant Remainer ministers for them to blame.
  • She has tried to insulate herself and the rest of the Tory party from any fallout, as much as possible. She can truthfully say she appointed the most enthusiastic and best qualified Brexit team to perform an impossible task that the electorate chose, not her.
  • Of course, if they pull off a good / acceptable deal, she gets a lot of credit for her briiliant choice of team Wink

==> Boris of course, is to keep all the foreigners distracted / pissing themselves laughing, while the other Brexiter ministers do the real work Wink
She's probably already pencilled in another highwire act where he gets stuck - a Swiss cablecar the next time maybe ? - at a crucial stage in the negotiations Grin

RedToothBrush · 13/07/2016 23:11

Oh and cat, Jeremy was talking about gender equality today. I'm sure you'll be please to know that....

Well said cat. You've managed to verbalise - very well I might add - how and why this is so awful. I agree with every word you say.

colouringinagain · 13/07/2016 23:14

I hear you cat it is horrendous. I've been appalled and busy sharing the details but it's not enough

HesterThrale · 13/07/2016 23:19

There is NO opposition. There is not likely to be by 5th September, when there is a debate about the EU Ref. It could be over in half an hour if the Tories have mainly accepted Brexit by then. The Government should be deciding 'whether it wants to start the process of agreeing a new law for a second referendum'.
The Labour Party are letting us down badly. At least AE or OS would attempt some vigorous debate. JC is now too tied up in his own 'raisin d'etre.'
