The Westministenders Hunger Games continues. Boris still trying not to be outmanoevered.

Clearly Boris didn't get the memo, on when to quit the power games, even after Gove schooled him in the dark arts of the Tory Leadership....

So the Tory Smackdown rolls on whilst Corbyn STILL clings on. UKIP has now entered the race to make a challenge for who can make the biggest leadership contest shambles.

In The Blue Corner
May strikes fear into the hearts of EU citizens as she counts her bargaining chips.
Gove strikes fear into the hearts of humans, with his Martian twitch.
Loathsom strikes fear in the hearts of Britains by talking about babies brains.
Crabb strikes fear into the hearts of Torys by suggesting a plan that Corbyn might like. (and that beard doesn't help).
And Fox.
Well he just turned up.

Johnson is still waiting in the wings to stab Gove. He'd quite fancy a seat at the cabinet table too.
Osborne has gone quite again and we wait with baited breathe to see if he is the 'Charlie off Casualty' of the Tory Party (y'know whatever happens he somehow survives like a cockroach).

In The Red Corner
Corbyn apologies. So we know he's getting a bit desperate.
Will the Unions figure out something else to do other than sit with their head in hands.
Angela Eagle is still doing jellyfish impressions and hasn't found that backbone.
We STILL don't know who the fuck Owen Smith is?
Will Bliar's chicken's finally come home to roost?
The Cult of Momentum, rumbles on. We aren't quite sure who they actually vote for, but they seem to like their Dear Leader.
When will this country next have an opposition party?

Its kinda getting boring guys, we need some action now. End the Chicken Coup! The Tories are definitely out doing in the high drama stakes.

In the Purple Corner
Farage has gone! Hurrah. We hope only that he stays under that rock.
(Don't count on it. They'll wheel him out when they need publicity)
Will Leadsom be elected leader? Oh sorry, wrong party. I was getting confused for a second there.
Will they throw the cuckoo Carswell out? [:)]
Will they be able to find a less offensive leader than Farage who can unite them in their common goal of errrr..... yeah. That.
How long before one of their candidates has to apologise for something?

And I suppose I should ask, when will a50 be triggered....? And by whom?

All these questions and more.
Sense of humour compulsory. No experience necessary though

Ooh yeah, crazy tie! Makes a change from red, which everyone and his dog seem to be wearing lately. What's that about?

Alisvolatpropiis · 05/07/2016 23:14

Sarah Vines column not being in the DM, Red.

Have they decided to keep Sarah 'sunlit meadows' Vine under lock and key until the leadership race is over?

RedToothBrush · 05/07/2016 23:18

Not sure Ali.
She could be having a sulk.
Or her husband / Dacre have her on a lead.

Or both.
Let's face it after last week, I'm not sure either will want her shooting her mouth off again. She made them both look stupid.

I simply don't buy into 'I'm helping my husband'.

Correction: Yellow tie = Liberal
Its a counter to the idea that he's homophobic.

She also received several thousand pounds each year in dividends.

She must have a huge share portfolio then, because I got a miserable £200 from my share holding.

TheBathroomSink · 05/07/2016 23:29

Loathsome's spokesman says she won't push the button on a50 immediately, she's also a tough negotiator.
David Davies says it's a bit different to some minor energy deals.

TheBathroomSink · 05/07/2016 23:30

Apparently (according to the ever reliable Facebook meme) her husband is a major shareholder in g4s. I really hope that's not the whole story.

citroenpresse · 05/07/2016 23:31

I'd definitely go for the progressive multi-party-alliance design as a deliberate tie choice…I bought my FIL (over 80, rabid Tory, anti-EU but solid Remain - are we mad?) a tie from the person that makes Jon Snow's ties. Come back LibDems, we need you.

TheBathroomSink · 05/07/2016 23:38

Oh, and the fb meme about may's husband was posted by someone who's also posted one blaming all the labour party woes on Alistair Campbell, who is apparently controlling the mps and all the media.

MrsLupo · 05/07/2016 23:43

Apparently (according to the ever reliable Facebook meme) her husband is a major shareholder in g4s.

No conflict of interest there then. Just like Jeremy Cunt's father's shareholding in Bupa and Nicky Morgan's husband's interest in a chain of academies. Fucksake.

JedRambosteen · 05/07/2016 23:55

Phew! you guys are prolific! It has taken me all evening to catch up. Great stuff!

BigChocFrenzy · 05/07/2016 23:57

These sum up the leadership squabbles in HM Government and HM Opposition
(poor old Queen at 90; no wonder she replied "well, I'm still alive" when asked how she was)
She's still gamely trotting round the country & RoI, doing her job at 90; the politicians are still sticking lighted matches up each others arses

The Westministenders Hunger Games continues. Boris still trying not to be outmanoevered.

George Monbiot on the necessity of a Rainbow Alliance:

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/jul/05/labour-survive-governing-alone-political-alliance-unity-british-left-power

I wish it could be so. I'm a Labour supporter living in a Tory/Libdem marginal and it creates a huge conflict of conscience for me. But as long as we have FPTP, what can you do. Sad

MrsLupo · 06/07/2016 01:41

And leading on from that, someone has just sent me a link to a petition started by the Greens, if petitions are your bag:

MrsLupo · 06/07/2016 01:53

Last one before I pack it in for the night. Not sure if this has been posted already upthread, but Dominic Grieve, former AG, has confirmed a second referendum is definitely possible and would be justifiable if there is sufficient evidence that the electorate's opinion has shifted:

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/dominic-grieve-brexit-second-eu-referendum-legal-former-attorney-general-says-7119491.html

Not sure I could bear the thought of doing it all again, though it's hard to imagine there could really be so many lies a second time. What would constitute evidence of a shifted opinion? The survey that said 1m+ Leave voters regretted their vote? And what if Remain won? Would we have to do best-of-three? Have we moved on from referendum re-runs at this point? Or is it still worth agitating. I am very torn.

Felascloak · 06/07/2016 07:29

I thought Theresa May's husband was very senior in G4S, as it's one of the reasons the police don't like her.
But apparenth it's an untrue rumour inews.co.uk/essentials/news/politics/theresa-mays-husband/
I like her more now

Lying Leadsom?!

Someone has linked to this over on the Leadsom thread.
Oh dear.

Chilcot out today, and we still haven't learn our lesson not to do anything based on lies and to have an exit plan.

Plus ça change...

wooflesgoestotown · 06/07/2016 08:25

I've been reading this thread to keep me sane in this post-ref new world, thank you.

I'm not sufficiently knowledgeable to have any useful input but have a question. I read on another thread a suggestion of requiring certain economic tests to be satisfied before an actual Brexit. Similar to requiring tests to be met before entering the euro.

Does anyone know anything about this?

I'm so worried about us jumping off a cliff into economic Armageddon which surely can't be a worthwhile thing to do regardless of our fears re the EU or any issues of democracy and not respecting the referendum.

RedToothBrush · 06/07/2016 08:26

If Chilcot had been published before the EU Referendum, history and the future might be different.

11am for official release of Chilcot. I think today will be reasonably quiet before then.

According to their Twitter accounts every single political pundit is locked in with their copy.

Red, I wouldn't be too sure.
Cognitive dissonance and all that. What's the past got with out gleaming future? Besides, Tomy Blair came out for Remain.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 06/07/2016 08:33

Tony.

Sincere apologies to everybody called Tomy.

DoinItFine · 06/07/2016 08:35

Pound dropped below $1.30 overnight.

RedToothBrush · 06/07/2016 08:37

I read on another thread a suggestion of requiring certain economic tests to be satisfied before an actual Brexit. Similar to requiring tests to be met before entering the euro.

Not seen that. I will try and look into it a bit later if no one else has. Real life getting in the way today!

The trouble is Greece fudged all their requirements for the Euro (whilst the UK looked into by the letter even though we were never going to do it and we apparently didn't make the requirements).

Andrea Leadsom has no experience as an investment banker … During 10 years at the investment fund Invesco Perpetual, from 1999 to 2009, she did not have any role in managing funds or advising clients. Despite the title ‘senior investment officer and head of corporate governance’ she only held approval from the financial services regulator – required for any roles dealing with funds or clients – for a three-month period from December 2002 to February 2003.

A spokesman for Leadsom told the Times:

Anyone who reads Andrea’s CV and attaches a lot of weight to that particular role may actually be under some slight misapprehension as to what it was she actually did.

Between this and the questions over her taxes and tax returns, her past could end up being quite damaging. This is the problem with fresh new faces.
