Thoughts?

I am convinced...

OP posts:
MyLettertoMP · 28/06/2016 16:44

You do realise that if you post on an EU thread you're bumping it up in Active Convos. Why not just ignore rather than opening the thread Confused

OP - I hope you're not BU. It's up to remainers to make our feelings known to our elected representatives.

inallseriousness · 28/06/2016 16:53

sylwright -any reason you are getting your news/opinion from a Russian propaganda 'news' website?

What do you think their agenda might be?

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 28/06/2016 16:54

BBC does receive EU funding, not sure how to link articles from phone but Google shows quite a few articles, including one from Telegraph in 2015, quite an interesting read

LagunaBubbles · 28/06/2016 16:56

I might have taken your OP more seriously if you had actually said something about your opinion, and not just a random "thoughts" Hmm

Peppatina · 28/06/2016 16:57

YABU it's all getting a bit...odd.

Usually intelligent people increasingly in denial made worse I think by the echo chamber of SM.

All the cries of, 'Well it's not legally binding' or 'It's a poll, a poll, a poll!' seem increasingly desperate and deluded.

Do you think it matters? The whole world is watching. The EU is taking it as gospel that we are gone (See Junker's 'why are you here?' speech today)

And you have really convinced yourself that our government will turn round, in front of the whole world and say, ' We asked the countries opinion and they clearly answered. But we are going to ignore them anyway.'

It would destroy the value of our votes, their would be complete uproar.

It's happening. The sooner you accept it and then do whatever you need to do to secure your life the better. For you and the country.

TheHiphopopotamus · 28/06/2016 17:07

I agree with peppa

And also, who the fuck is going to bother voting for anything ever again if we don't leave. When they call a general election, who's to say if a Labour government is voted in, the reigning Tories won't just say, 'well actually, the voters didn't mean it, it wasn't actually a legally binding result, it was just an opinion poll. I think we'll stay in power forever.'

CaptainBrickbeard · 28/06/2016 17:08

Peppatina, this isn't something I can or will accept. Please stop telling people that they have to; they don't. People can campaign against this, they can do their utmost to prevent it from happening. No one is obliged to accept that a slim majority, a campaign of lies and an absence of any forward planning or direction is just what we are stuck with.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 28/06/2016 17:09

As much as it is non binding, if parliament voted it down (which is possible) it would unleash a shit storm.

If the commons vote for it, and the house of lords vote it down it will unleash a shit storm.

A much bigger shit storm than we have now.

We're leaving, we need to suck it up and get on with things.

CaptainBrickbeard · 28/06/2016 17:10

A general election isn't an opinion poll. It has been pointed out repeatedly that a referendum is not always acted upon and there is plenty of precedent in fact for not doing so. It is pointless to compare it to a general election, it is a different thing.

GoodLoveShinesBrightly · 28/06/2016 17:13

Weeeeell because there is a difference between an election and a referéndum.

GoodLoveShinesBrightly · 28/06/2016 17:14

That was to TheHIp.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 28/06/2016 17:17

A referendum is just an opinion poll... How are there people who do not know this?? Hmm

TheHiphopopotamus · 28/06/2016 17:18

Ok.

But we'll be leaving the EU, glorified opinion poll, legally binding or not. So enough clutching at straws and get used to the idea Smile

puffylovett · 28/06/2016 17:20

The bbc has had funding from the EU.

And having been glued to the news since Thursday, I think on thing is abundantly clear - whatever we think about our referendum and wether we can trigger article 50 or not, Europe don't want us anymore. They now consider themselves a union of 27.

Added to the fact that the world is watching and reporting on this and the utter shambles that is our parliament, daily.

We can't just turn around now and say 'ooh, actually - we've changed our minds'

We would be an utter laughing stock

puffylovett · 28/06/2016 17:21

One, not on!
Sorry. On phone

puffylovett · 28/06/2016 17:22

And we would be utterly reviled the world over for causing this much disruption for no reason.

Even more so than we are currently

HPFA · 28/06/2016 17:23

In my dreams the EU decides that they can make sensible reforms to freedom of movement ( such as requiring that people first have a job offer before moving countries) and the government offers a second referendum based on a material change of circumstances. Perfectly democratic, since people will be quite free to reject the EU again.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 28/06/2016 17:23

It's a very small margin, and most of the leave campaign was based on lies. If I had voted to leave I think I would feel angry and want a chance to rectify my mistake....

Boris is wearing a face that basically says 'fuck - what did we do!!'

Let's hope those with the power to stop this see sense.

sorenofthejnaii · 28/06/2016 17:24

I suspect we'll Brexit but what we are left will won't be too different to now.

If we want access to the EU free market, what else will we have to accept?

Brexit means different things to different people and the 'deal' we strike to gain free access to the EU market might not be enough for some people but fine for others.

QueefRichards · 28/06/2016 17:24

As for the reports of racism that are in the news, I suspect there are no more cases now than there were before the referendum

Oh, silly me. I expect I imagined the EDL rally in my city with banners demanding repatriation for all immigrants now we've voted leave.

Or all the tweets demanding similar.

CaptainBrickbeard · 28/06/2016 17:24

Well, it isn't legally binding and no one in the Leave side has a single clue about how to actually do this so I'm really not about to give up hope just yet, thanks very much. If someone comes forward with an actual plan then I will start to feel worried.

There may be uproar if we don't leave, but there will be uproar if we do leave and none of the promises are kept - which it is already clear they won't be. A huge proportion of Leave voters are not going to get what they thought they were voting for whatever happens. Half the country are appalled by the result. There is no peaceful, calm way forwards from this whether we leave or stay.

sorenofthejnaii · 28/06/2016 17:24

But we'll be leaving the EU, glorified opinion poll, legally binding or not. So enough clutching at straws and get used to the idea

What will leaving the EU actually mean though?

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 28/06/2016 17:27

We had such a favourable membership - we only had to pay around 0.1% of our GDP vs other members who pay around 1%... We tried three times to join, and were able to do so without freedom of movement or signing Schengen.

They are not going to let us trade in the single market without bending over backwards.... And we will no longer have a say.

And that's without the racism etc it's caused in our country.

I still can't actually believe anyone with the ability to read would have voted out.

NotYoda · 28/06/2016 17:27

good post CaptainBrickbeard
